What network? In Chicago I found AT&T disappointing but better in the suburbs. T-Mobile is a bit better in the city, but not necessarily any better than their already excellent LTE.

@roland.g can we change this thread from 5G only to postIng what people are also getting if they are on LTE. I think it would be interesting to see both speeds.

Is anyone in an area where there is high band 5g on their carrier? One of my carriers is AT&T and in an 5g+ area I top 1,000 dl. Thats on my note ultra. My iphone pro comes tomorrow so ill be testing that also.

Today I went to a city park where the Verzino tower is only a half mile away, in direct line of sight and no interference. 5G continues to be significantly slower than LTE. So I decided to turn off 5G for now.
How do you “turn off” 5G? I’ve seen multiple people say this, but I can’t seem to find any option for it. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right spot.

Edit: never mind, found it. Cellular data options. I didn’t click on it since it says “roaming data off” as the subtext, so I just assumed that’s all that section was for, haha.

I’m not surprised. Verizon is basically using a portion of their LTE spectrum to roll out 5G to say they have it. AT&T and T-Mobile are, too, but they also have more dedicated spectrum (T-Mobile has the most right now).

So far, I’ve noticed that 5G is slower than LTE in downtown Chicago, but 5G has been faster in the parts of suburban Chicago I was in today.
You are correct, and I’m hoping that Verizon wins a lot of C-Band spectrum at the December auction!

5G and LTE are not like LTE and 3G. Whereas LTE and 3G couldn't coexist (that is you can't have both on the same spectrum), 5G and LTE can be on the same spectrum, and so Verizon isn't exactly using "a portion of" it's spectrum. The two live together.

  • Los Angeles
  • AT&T
  • 78 down / 39 up
  • Left is 5G, right is LTE (aka 5Ge)

iPhone Model: iPhone 12
Carrier: T-Mobile
Location: Cary, IL (tested to Elgin, IL T-Mobile server)

For me, I'm getting faster speeds still on LTE (same LTE speeds as with my 11 Pro and SE 2020).

Data Mode for all tests: Allow More Data on 5G

5G On: 169 down / 28.7 up
5G Auto: 156 down / 28.4 up
LTE: 241 down / 40.1 up
and WiFi on (Xfinity) and cellular off: 266 down / 23.2 up

Hopefully the networks will improve. I mean in the days of going from 3G/3.5G to 4G LTE I don’t think I ever saw people getting lower speeds on 4G, but with 5G I am seeing a lot of people reporting better speeds on 4G LTE, Wtf, lol.
