You're not using memory packaged for the iMac 5K. You're having kernel panics. Seems obvious to me. Of course it could be something you installed but I am sure you have considered all the things you installed in the last 24 to 48 hours.

Erm... just... no? :)

Anyway, if you follow the thread you'll see I still have issues even with Crucial Mac RAM CL11, which is what I'm using now.

Yep, and if you follow the thread I have reported that Crucial can be a problem in the iMac 5K. Perhaps its time for the OWC?

No chance. Sorry, but I don't drink OWC-Or-Nothing Kool Aid (not that I have anything against OWC). Zillions of people run Crucial and Corsair memory on their Macs without issue. I suspect my problems are not memory related.

Just had two in a row. I have no idea how to decipher it. I didn't save the first log. Can anyone help?

There's not too much to comment on...
It LOOKS like your Messages app caused this crash, but not much else.
I don't even notice any third party apps, which may have kexts, etc, reported in that list of loaded kexts.
Anything in particular that you can add? For example, what (exactly) were you doing at the time of the panic? Doing anything new? Have you just installed some new software, or updated an app that you have already been using?
If you don't recall anything, then you may want to note anything unusual the NEXT time you get a panic (if ever :D )

I said iMac 5k was the issue with crucial. This is pointless. Good luck.

And another crash tonight!

There's nothing technically wrong with using CL9 memory in a CL11 machine. It will only run at the latency speed that the system can handle (i.e. if the iMac could only handle 11, it would run the CL9 memory at CL11).

That is right.

And another crash this morning..

Do you still have Apple memory that came with it? Put it back in and see if that solves your problems.

You seemed to be doing fine recently! And now, you installed the El Capitan beta. Seems mostly stable for me, but I have also encountered my first kernel panics in around 10 years, along with some problems with some other software that I use. Because of some of those minor issues, I have reinstalled the beta 5 times in two days - and have decided it's better, in my case, to wait until the El Cap system is released, or at least a later beta. Looking forward to that, as my Mini is really feels faster with El Cap

No chance. Sorry, but I don't drink OWC-Or-Nothing Kool Aid (not that I have anything against OWC). Zillions of people run Crucial and Corsair memory on their Macs without issue. I suspect my problems are not memory related.
I said iMac 5k was the issue with crucial. This is pointless. Good luck.
He's right though, I haven't had any issues with it in my iMac 5K, as I've mentioned before.

Obviously, you are not listening.

Hey WilliamG, I just came across your issues and read the thread from the beginning since I'm having the same issue as you. RiMac originally with 8 GB of RAM and upgraded to 32GB Crucial. Never had the Corsair in my case.

My first thought was that the Crucial memory was faulty so I asked for a replacement and had exactly the same issue with the new sticks. So I thought was a software issue.
I fresh installed Yosemite and nothing else and waited for the kernel panics and it happened no long after the fresh install.

It is a new RiMac (2 months old) and I was trying not to take it to an Apple Store for a checkup but at that time I was hopeless and the frustration was getting really big.
At the Apple Store, the kernel panics happened when I was there with the "genius" at the GeniusBar while I was explaining the whole situation to him. Needless to say that I took the RiMac with the Crucial sticks in it and not the original 8GB sticks.
So they said, will wipe it out completely and run some tests and see if it happens again. If it does we'll probably need to replace the RiMac alltogether since it's a very new machine does qualify for a full replacement and not just a repair.
Waited for their call and after 2 days they call and say, your iMac is ready for pick up, when you come we'll explain what we've found...Great! I thought but when I got there the "genius" said, we fresh installed the OS and ran some tests and no kernel panic occured so probably was some Yosemite update that was the problem. Hmmm, it was so weird...I was expecting a longer-juicy-worth-to-watch fight from the geniuses at that time and they ended up saying just that: "It never crashed here, mate" and I really believed them at that time and didn't try to boot it up while I was at the store.

I came back home and less than 5 mins after I was having a kernel panic again...5 minutes later called Apple support, explained the problem and they are sending me a RiMac replacement (It'll arrive in 2 days).
When here, I'll have 2 32GB kits of Crucial sticks to try and see if the incompatibility is with the iMac itself and not with the memory.

I heard you completely when you said you were thinking that the RAM was not the issue. I really hope we both were right since I think exactly the same.

This issue was by far the most frustrating/annoying one I had in years and I couldn't find any solution online although there are some people having it.

Anyway, 2 more days of wait to try the new iMac. I'll be posting the outcome obviously.
Cheers

Do you have a kernel panic log? This may be very different issues...

Yes I had, but now is in the box waiting for be collected.
Mine had the -62 error code and was related to the GPU sometimes. That's all I remember.

Sounds like you were having a very different issue, it seems. Good luck with the new system!

Just reading some email just now and bam..

And, it looks like updating the El Capitan beta didn't help you. Maybe you will see improvement as the beta process continues on.
Be sure to keep reporting your problem to Apple.

The service related to the crash seems to be diskarbitrationd - which may be one of your storage devices, or the device interface, I suppose.
You have a fusion drive, so how is your Samsung SSD 850 Pro connected to your iMac?

You have a fusion drive, so how is your Samsung SSD 850 Pro connected to your iMac?

I use a Seagate 2.5" Thunderbolt adapter to connect my Samsung 850 - which is my boot drive. Bear in mind the same issue was present with the internal fusion as my boot drive, AND the issue originally started about 3 months after switching to the external boot drive over Thunderbolt

I've not read of anyone else with this problem, which is why it's so FREAKING ANNOYING. It does look like the kernel panic information changed with the update to El Capitan Public Beta. Whereas before it was just numbers and letters, now it does reference that diskarbitrationd, which, while still not helpful in terms of narrowing this down, - at least it's a vaguely recognizable word.

I finally said screw this, called Apple, and they're going to replace the entire logic board on the iMac. Something's not been right for a while. RAM not working on this iMac but working perfectly on others, for one thing...

Either way, hopefully a logic board will fix the issue. I just wish I could recreate the kernel panics on demand! It can go a whole week without panicking!

Just to update. The problem appeared to have been the Seagate Backup Plus 2.5" enclosure was dying, OR it was the Thunderbolt cable connecting said enclosure to the iMac. I replaced the enclosure with another Seagate Backup Plus 2.5" enclosure (still with the same 1TB Samsung 850 Pro inside), and the Thunderbolt cable with another identical Thunderbolt cable.

It's now been... 2.5 months uptime without an issue, where previously I'd be lucky to make it two days. I don't know if it's the cable or the enclosure that is faulty, but I don't want to plug either back in to the iMac to find out!
