If you have made ALL the payments, then it is yours. You can then get a phone at full price, or another next phone.
If you have only made half the payments are moving up to the "next"phone, then you trade it in.
Ah, thank you!

so the question I have is - if you go the 12 mth upgrade Next route- where you have to turn the phone back in... how does the process work?
Can you still preorder the phone from Apple and get it on launch day? Do you then, at some later point in time, take your old phone into an ATT store (or send it to ATT)?
I'm considering the Next plan - but I really like getting the new iPhone on launch day (all the excitement is fun etc.). I'm afraid the 'process' associated with turning in the old phone could hinder things.
But it's either Next or a 2 year contract. If you're buying the phone out right, you're getting the same pricing plan as you would using Next. So yes there is a benefit using Next when paying off the phone, because once the phone is paid off, you're monthly phone bill gets cheaper.
You either pay for it up front or over time, but either way you're paying the same price.
Great info. Using next to get the i6. Plan to get the 12 month as I like to get every new iphone.
understandable but I still don't see the benefit in using NEXT. I currently have the iPhone 5S. It clearly hasn't been 2 years which means i'm not eligible to upgrade BUT what I do is trade in my phone and use that money towards my iPhone 6 which will put my iPhone 6 at an eligible upgrade contract price. So why use should I use next and pay $384 for a year? I'm sincerely confused. I must be missing something lol. I feel like there is a benefit to the program that I'm not seeing.
Yes u are eligible for next. I joined Att last year when the 5s dropped and 3 of my lines where eligible for next 4 months ago. I sold my wife 5s last month cuz she got bored of iPhone and got her a galaxy s5 via next. As soon I get my i6 I'm selling my 5s. So after I get my i6 I basically sold 2 mint condition 5s. Pocket the money in the bank. Paid just taxes upfront. Also gotta make sure ur account is in good standing u aren't late on payments. You should be good for next.
I know I am eligible for NEXT but I don't want next because I don't see the benefit in having it when I can just take my phone to AT&T and use the trade in/recycle program they have. I'd rather not pay $384 for a phone that I can't keep. I already pay AT&T $140 a month for my service. I don't see the benefit in paying $384 after a year of next on a phone that I could just pay $200, well $300 in my case since I get 32GB iPhones (which means higher monthly payments via next) for. Basically, I think NEXT is a ripoff.
Why would u sale ur 5s to Att and get less money. I sold wife's gold 32 gb 5s in mint conditions last month for $525. It's gone down a bit since new iPhone tends to lower prices for previous models. Selling my 5s 16gb mint for $400 when I get the 6.
U pay $140 for 1 line? Wow!!! I pay $142 for 3 lines on the 10gb plan with an 18% corporate discount. Next month goes up since I got my wife a galaxys5 via next last month.
Because if you are on a plan with 10 GB of data or more you get $25/month off with next. While with a contract you don't get that discount. So depending on your plan Next can save some money compared to contract or the contract can be better.I know I am eligible for NEXT but I don't want next because I don't see the benefit in having it when I can just take my phone to AT&T and use the trade in/recycle program they have. The difference is that Next isn't like that. People who don't really look into the details just generalize and often come to incorrect overall conclusions.People who rent things like cars, furniture, appliances, never pay their credit card in full each month like Next.
Next is a suckers bet.
Thr missing part there is that you would have to trade your phone in if you upgrade like that (before paying it off).Funny, I actually talked to an AT&T Rep a couple of months a go so that he could brief me on what exactly partaking in the Next program entailed for this very occasion. Now bear in mind, this is exactly what he told me and I made him repeat it several times and even took screenshots of the conversation to make sure I'd remember it right.
As he explained it (several times) and I then reiterated for confirmation (again, several times) You pay the sales tax on the phone and the price of the phone is split up into mostly installments on a 20-month term (which would end up being around 32/mo. for the cheapest model.) If in fact you want to upgrade the following year, (and here's what I thought was crazy but, again, he confirmed it several , and it matches with what OP said) you pay the installment for that month and the remaining debt is waived term starts all over again. Now I know it seems like a steal but you have to keep in mind that this means that they've just extended what would have been only 8 more months of payment (259) to a new full 20-month term (649.) Yielding them 410 extra dollars in profit.
There's no way two different agents told us both the same exact detail wrong, so that must be the way that it works
You don't have to, you can pay it off and own it and upgrade at that point (and sell your phone or keep it if you want).I'm still thinking about whether I should go from a two year contract to the Next program. Those of you who are on it with the 5s, how much extra are you paying each month to "lease" the phone on the 12 month program? It sounds like it is worth it to be able to upgrade each year, but haven't decided yet. I keep going between wanting to so it and not. I don't know if I want to turn in a phone that I paid for 12 months on.
From my understanding, and calculations, with AT&T next you're actually paying more than you would on a 2 year contract. if you're paying $32 a month for say 24 months, thats $768. You might as well buy an unlocked device. I don't see the benefit of the program. Even if you do the 12 month plan, you still end up paying $384 which is still ridiculous for a 16GB model. Again, correct me if i'm wrong.

That aside, as far as comparing Next to paying full price of the phone, as far as the cost goes, the money is the same, you just pay it off in smaller amounts each month on Next instead of all at once.

oh sorry I should've clarified! I pay $140 for my 5S and for my iPad mini (which is on NEXT. If I had known more about NEXT at the time I wouldn't have gotten it.) My family is at Verizon. My mom and brother both work for AT&T so i've been trying to get them to come over for the 10gb shared family plan because we will also get a discount since they work for the company.
You put $100 down in most cases and then it's $32 a month (it comes out to the same price as buying it our right, not sure of the exact math). Whatever the cost of the 16GB iPhone is, that's what you're paying. If $384 is too much, then get a cheaper phone with Android or something.
For me it works out a lot cheaper this route seeing I was paying $200 for 2 smart phones and 1 dumb phone and now playing $140 a month for 3 smartphones. The only time my bill will go up is if I get a new phone again and use Next to pay it off, but once the phone is paid off my bill goes back down. I don't have unlimited data, but I never needed it anyways.
Before I could keep the same phone for 3 years (well over a contract) and still pay $200 a month. When I did that I was off contract after those 2 years and my subsidized phone was paid off in that 1st 2 years. If my phones are paid off after my 2 year contract, why isn't my bill any lower that 3rd year? Now I can buy new phones, see my bill go up to pay them off (if I go that route) and then see my bill drop after they are paid off.
We have 3 smartphones, but the ones will always get the hand downs. I found it way cheaper for my family doing this, and no contracts.
Yea, you need to do something different. I pay $160 TOTAL for 4 iphones with 10gb data and tethering to two ipads and laptop. And that is with no corp discount.
