 Whaaaaaat! Digital zoom sucks? I don't believe it. /sarc

C'mon digital zoom has been the phoniest of all camera marketing inventions since it's introduction. If it's not optical it's not zoom. Might as well just blow it up 500x in Photoshop. The first thing I do when I buy a new camera is make sure digital zoom is off. I'd pay extra if a camera didn't have the "feature."

Exactly.

All you have to do is take a picture, go to it in the library, pinch to zoom the picture, then take a snap shot. I took two pictures each using the two different methods and got the same exact photo. (I would post picture but I'm posting this from my phone)
Yeah but when you do this, you're left with an image that is much smaller in size (iPhone screen size).

Well, I don't think the 5x digital zoom is that bad, especially for a phone. These are two pictures taken yesterday in Vegas of a resterount we ate at. I stood in the exact same spot and took both pictures.

I haven't looked at them on a computer yet, but on the phone it seems pretty decent. I think with the higher res camera, and more than likely better camera software in iPhone 4, they will look even better! Obviously it won't replace a good camera, but for someone like me who doesn't want to carry one around, it gets the job done.

Both pics are nice, but the digitally zoomed-in shot doesn't reveal any additional detail in the subject. I think the lack of image quality (or fidelity) in the second shot would be much more apparent if you were photographing people as opposed to a distant building.

The digital zoom quality can be seen if you zoom up on something very close.
