Fortunately my 13 mini continues to roll on strong as ever. Worst case, I pay for a battery replacement a year from now, if needed.

Though I was tempted by the (rumored) yellow 14, I will hold out hope for a return of the mini form factor, and only upgrade when the poor 13 mini can't handle anymore.

And that is still a few years off, I hope.

They're forced into this, they were going to release a XR with 5G and new chip but the SE 3 got utterly slaughtered in sales and non bias media reviews because of the 8 year old design, dated 720p LCD display and puny little camera.

While Google, Samsung and others released FHD OLED equipped phones at cheaper prices and the rest of the world isn't locked into iMessage peer pressure like America and will happily buy value for money in the current climate.

Something Apple needed to learn a lesson and now they're rushing to flog this left over iPhone 13 but rebranded and probably at a higher price.

I hope it tanks.

Should be a 13 Mini with a new chip, 3 colours (midnight, starlight, red) and same price, stop letting them rip people off with mid level specs at premium prices.
I was just thinking it seems strange for them to leapfrog from the 2017 iPhone 8 design to the current 14 design in the SE, but it makes sense if you think of it like that.

I can understand Apple's hesitancy to base the next SE on the mini due to the mini's poor sales but it would at least distinguish it more from the rest of the iPhone lineup especially with the current, smaller SE going away. A 5.4" SE with a starting price of around $449 might've done well. I think a 6.1" SE will cannibalize sales from other 6.1" (13/14) models, much more so than a 5.4" SE would.

I wonder if the 6.1" SE will result in Apple dropping the 13 instead of keeping it around for a third year. At least that would streamline Apple's iPhone lineup a bit.

I just don't see how Apple's branding of its iPhone lineup could get much worse. Mini, SE, what the heck is going on out in California. Must be something in the air.

Terrible news for people who hate the flickery, PWM laden screens Apple uses today
I wonder how many people are affected negatively by PWM. Do you have any links to scientific studies about PWM?

I found one paper: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15980316.2021.1950854 but it's one of the worst research articles I've ever seen.

A conclusion: "In this paper, the effects on the human body of flicker caused by PWM dimming control of LEDs were described."

The author did no such thing.

"Finally, the effects of smartphone displays on the human body were evaluated through experiments."

This is laughably incorrect. Here's what the author did: "The photodetector (model PDA100A, Thorlabs, USA) was placed at a distance D from the center of the DUT, at which point it measured the flicker in place of the human eye"

Using a photodetector doesn't count as measuring "the effects of smartphone displays on the human body". Last time I checked, you generally need human research participants to measure effects on the human body.

If you're aware of other research, I'd love to read it. I keep reading about the problems of PWD but so far haven't found anything that's not just a discussion online.

What's in the air is, money. If you look at Apple's sales charts, the iPhone has the majority of sales by a wide margin over anything else Apple sells. It's in their best interest to sell as much as they can before something else comes along and replaces smartphones altogether. The danger here is that people are beginning to question their privacy by using smartphones, even if you use an iPhone. And it's not just privacy but the effects of privacy plus the impact social media has on their lives and the addiction that comes with that. There is now a groundswell movement where dumbphones are now making a comeback.

I think I’m going to buy a 14 as soon as the 15 is released and -hopefully- they drop 14’s price. I suspect this upcoming SE 4 is going to be a trimmed down or downgraded version of the 14, with just one camera, one ambient light sensor, and worse PWM on the screen. Also I want to have a Qualcomm powered iPhone, I have no idea how the new Apple modem will perform.

And many of you might wonder why the 14 and not the 13? Having 6GB of RAM instead of 4 should be enough reason, but an easy access to the battery without touching the screen, the double ambient light sensor, and the easier on the eyes PWM OLED screen are all reasons to get the 14 on top of the 13.

Like I said, hopefully it will drop the price once the 15 gets released.
Maybe not a full downgrade, the current SE already has an A15 so I'd expect this one to come with an A16. It should be more powerful than the 13 or 14.

Please scrap this move Apple.
I have used the Mini and SE side by side and I don’t see much difference in the display!

The SE form factor works!
Touch ID works faster than Face ID in my opinion.
The LCD is perfect for me. I get headaches using OLED iPhones!

SE Plus from iPhone 8 chassis would sell more than cheap OLED iPhone 14!

Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14...

I'll believe this when I see it as this would be a huge departure from how Apple has historically developed the iPhone SE and for it to get to a certain price point.

I'd imagine an iPhone 14-based SE would start at a much higher price than the $429 the iPhone SE is at now (was $399 before), unless Apple wants to move it up market. An iPhone 14-based SE would easily be $600-$700. At that price, people may opt for one of the iPhone 15 models for $200-$300 more instead.

It's the iPhone SE's price point that has allowed Apple to steal away Android users who usually shop for low- to mid-range Android handsets. An iPhone SE at $600-$700 becomes a harder sell to these people.

I still think the iPhone SE 4 should be the iPhone 13 mini design, but with a larger power button for proper Touch ID on the power button and a single sensor in the back.

Wow so now there will be Three 6.1” iphones and Three 6.7” iphones in the line up soon (iphone Ultra). Great stuff Apple… they should use the Mini chassis and provide a 5.4” SE size. Gives more sizing options.

I loved the 13 mini size too.

What I wished it had:

-pro camera setup
-way better heat dissipation properties (too hot)

Other than that STELLAR device.

Edit: and additionally, after having the 14pro since October, I do really yearn for a lighter device. It could be a touch smaller too… but I really appreciate the breathing room of the 6.1” screen.

If they could get the 5.8” iPhone 11pro screen in a smaller chassis (flat edges) that would be pretty perfect.

I just really didn’t like the shrunk screen of the 5.4”. iOS is optimized for at least the 6.1” screen now. Which is sad.

I expect prices for this SE model to be a lot lowered.

I expect Apple to say, "This is the cheapest iPhone we have ever made.
You mean higher. A lot higher. No way this will be "a lot lowered" [sic] than the iPhone SE's current $429 starting price, not if its based on the iPhone 14 and has not just a larger 6.1 inch display, but an OLED dislay. This is going up 30% to 40%

There is now a groundswell movement where dumbphones are now making a comeback.

I doubt feature phones will ever make a serious comeback beyond people who buy into the whole ”things were so great back in 2004” nostalgia. Just typing out a message on one is enough to make one appreciate having a smartphone with a full touch keyboard, and given that written communication is probably something that people use their phones for more than actual voice communication these days I’m pretty sure smartphones are here to stay as the default choice in the developed world (and much of the developing world, tbh). Affordability isn’t even that big of a factor given how easy it is to get a decent, cheap android phone.

If Apple move to using more Chinese produced parts for iPhone, then I will move to Samsung next time... Im already keeping my phone for years longer due to made in china

I could see it. The iPhone 14 design is nearly same as iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 was priced at $599 in 2022 so $499 in 2024 isn't that far off. There's also additional savings from this SE likely using a year and a half old chip instead of the latest chip like the older SE's did. Maybe remove the ultra wide lens.

I'm just not sure how it would fit into the lineup with the 13 and 14.

I've actually not had any issues with heat from my 13 mini; but I also hardly use the device outside text messages and phone calls. The most intense use my phone gets is Marvel Snap for 20 minutes. 😂

Though I do agree that the pro camera set up would be awesome; I want to take more pictures with my phone, but I am just never quite satisfied with the zoom properties on my phone.
