You would not have to re-buy Lightning connector headphones if you waited for the 7/7+. There will be a Lightning to Headphone adapter. Not sure why so many get the idea that just because the port goes away that all 3.5mm accessories are doomed to never work again.

As for 3D Touch. It's not going away and is going to be a standard feature from here on out (Even new android phones this year will have their own version of it.) it makes some navigation easier/quicker and it is something that will only get better and better as it matures.

More ram is always good and will typically always be a better experience. Also as iOS moves forward each year with new features, they will only work on 2+ GB of ram devices eventually.

I would at this point just wait for the iPhone 7.

Yeah, but he said he didn't want to carry around an adapter, and I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to either.

3D Touch is not significant enough yet to be a game changer. Many apps use it, but I don't think many people do.

RAM increase is very noticeable in Safari. That one is huge.

I went from an iPhone 6 to a 6s Plus.

For my daily usage, the increase in RAM and Speed weren't major improvements. Live Photos, I like a lot. 3d touch hasn't been much of game changer. Faster TouchID is nice.

I have the 6S+, my first iPhone in a couple years. I left iPhone because Android was faster. I came back because of the 2Gb. Surprised you don't notice.

The RAM is the biggest upgrade to me, not having to lose my spot in an app as soon as I switch from it is very nice.

Faster TouchID is a good perk, 3D touch, ehhh my least used feature, I use it mostly on the keyboard to move around.

Camera is not a big deal, very minor if any, I know the front camera is improved which is nice, but nothing revolutionary about it.

I'd probably hold off to see what the 7 has to bring! Worst case the 6S will be cheaper lol

Existing iPhone 6 owner here, strongly considering upgrading to either a 6s or a 6s+.

Backstory: Been an entirely satisfied iPhone user since the 3G. Before that I was an extremely heavy iPod user, being utterly music obsessed so with each iPhone I've gone for the highest capacity available each time. 3G 16GB, 4 32GB, 5 64GB, 6 128GB. Upgraded every other year figuring that buying on launch day with Applecare would give me a 24 month supported life, with each upgrade being a worthwhile, significant update.

The natural update to my 128GB iPhone 6 would be the likely 7, especially with the rumoured 256GB model. However the recurring rumours of Apple dropping the 3.5mm headphone jack is giving me serious concern. I own and get daily use out of my Bose Qc25i and Qc20i headphones, cans I use with my MBP & Surface Pro 3 as well. The idea of having to rebuy lightning cabled headphones having spend nearly £600 on my perfectly good existing headphones does not appeal. Nor does having to carry around a lightning > 3.5mm adapter.

Of course everything regarding the 7 is all rumour with nothing that can be be known for certain before the 7 launch keynote.

So why the upgrade consideration?

Music aside, I was concerned moving from the 5 to the 6 on account of the 'huge' screen size. Turns out I needn't have worried as the 6 has been wonderful from a screen size perspective. The Kindle app has been terrific, webpages have been so much more legible and single handed use hasn't been the issue I thought it might have been.Likewise Touch ID wasn't something I initially thought I would make heavy use of. Turns out to the opposite: as well as easy unlocking of the phone, I've made regular use of it with the Amazon apps amongst others. Wouldn't be without it now.

So a 6s would be good, and a 6s+ screen would probably be even better. So it comes down to the two factors mentioned in the title:

  • Has 3D Touch proven to be a worthwhile feature now that time has passed and more third party apps are supporting it? Has it improved the navigability of the phone, Safari and other first & third party apps?

  • Likewise has the 2GB RAM vs the 1GB of the 6 made a meaningful day to day improvement? I appreciate the releasing of RAM pressure on a technical level but has it translated into an appreciable real world benefit?

3D Touch feels very much like a gimmick, but force sensitive displays have huge potential. Apple did not optimise iOS well for 3D Touch, however, I feel this will change when other platforms adopt force sensitive displays. New ways of using 3D Touch with a touch operating system will come forth.

I do not agree that 3D touch is a gimmick like many have said, i use it daily and would find it difficult going back.

Might I ask what you are using it for? I haven't seen anything useful so far, but I know very little about it so perhaps I just haven't discovered the right things yet.

I rarely use or think about 3D Touch. It's probably due to the fact that iOS or apps in general haven't taken full advantage of it yet. Or it might just be a gimmick, time will tell I guess.

However, the ninja upgrade from 1gb to 2gb of ram is tremendous, at least in respect to how I use the phone. I say ninja because apple didn't make a big deal , or even announce, the double ram....even though it's been one of the biggest upgrades to the iPhone.

My business relies on me checking stats in a browser window several times per day, and with 1gb of ram I had to reload the entire page which turned a 1 second ordeal into 10-20 seconds. The 6s keeps all my pages that I need cached so I don't have to reload the entire page just to check a single stat. I also have a few games I like to play, and with the 1gb phone, sometimes the entire game would have to restart if i left it unattended and the screen turned off or I multi tasked to a different app. With the 6s, this has not happened once, so I can stop playing a game without taking a gamble of losing my place.

It's the small things that make the biggest difference.

I made the jump from 6+ to 6S+ specifically because it has 2 GB of ram. I believe 2 GB of ram makes the phone much more future proof. I really don't care about 3D Touch.

buying any iphone today put in the the past and gradually becomes obsolete because
1) it is an electronic
2) every year there will be a new and better iphone, possibly cheaper.
3) battery gradually decreases its holding charge capacity.

you buy what you need today, and save the money, that you spend for "future proof" feature, for future lphone.

as for 2GB of ram, personally my usage of iphone 6 plus is not as demanding as my usage of a computer. So 1GB of ram does not affect me at all.

Well, iOS updates might change that to some degree, and your usage might change to some degree. So even if 1 GB of RAM is fine, 2 GB is still better, especially as far as "future-proofing" goes.

2GB of RAM is why I upgraded to 6S+. I normally upgrade once every two years but the endless reloading and crashing made my iPhone 6+ unusable. 3D Touch is nice but not losing my data due to reloads has been amazing. I highly recommend the 6s. The ultra fast Touch ID is just an extra bonus
