I think it's a mistake

When you have a generalist product as the only option, you lose out on benefits on either end of the spectrum of usage needs/desires

It's wild to me that offering a fitness focused option would be positioned as "fracturing the product line"

I think an equally likely fear of theirs is that an option with wildly better battery life would DESTROY sales of the other ones and become a benchmark they can't keep up on with the other devices in the lineup
Someone already mentioned it’s the best selling watch in the planet. Not to say it can’t be improved. However it seems to say they nailed their target demographic.
All I want is heart rate broadcasting, so I can use it with my cycling computer. Also, I think it’s dumb that they release the new ultra in the fall. This watch is for outdoor enthusiasts, why not release it before the summer begins?

All the thousands/millions of Garmin users want is a battery that lasts a week of more, like our current Garmin…….. all the fancy hypertension crap is just crap. Decent battery - take my money.
Everybody has their personal wish list for the Apple Watch.

Ultra is not. Apple is(at least was 2 years ago) not the leading manufacturer in the premium smart watch segment.

Here is a shocker, but maybe the AUW isn't for you. I have no issue charging my watch whether I am home or out camping for several days; it has never been an issue. I want features, I know features that have battery life.

$599 in 2025 is way cheaper than $499 in 2007. Economics 101.

2007-2025 has a cumulative rate of inflation over 50%. 499 back in 2007 is equivalent to ~765 in today’s money
My post was not meant to be off topic it was in reference to another MR posting asking for said reference. 😊

Yeah, it seems pretty clear that Apple is content with providing longer battery life on the Ultra, but not at the expense of what makes an Apple Watch an Apple Watch. People that need much longer battery likely aren't ever going to get what they want from Apple.

What’s the point of 5G on an Apple Watch? All it’ll do is burn battery faster so you can send your text message like 5% faster
From 9to5Mac (https://9to5mac.com/2025/01/21/apple-watch-ultra-3-three-new-features-coming-next-year/):

This third upgrade also focuses on connectivity. Whereas previous Apple Watch Ultra models have been limited to 4G LTE connectivity, Apple plans to bring 5G to the Ultra 3 this year.

This upgrade will reportedly take the form of 5G Redcap, a less power-hungry version of 5G. Redcap can’t hit the same max speeds as your iPhone’s 5G, but it will ensure your Watch doesn’t take a big battery hit either.

Ultra may not be the leading model within Apple Watch, however according to copilot, as if 10/23 Apple is considered to be the leading premium smartwatch manufacturer.
Not according to the market research 2 years ago on Premium ($500+ watches).

Blood pressure monitoring is not the same as hypertension detection. Blood pressure monitoring is still not possible without a cuff.

I had an ultra 1 and “upgraded” to the s10

Let’s say I miss the ultra can’t wait until this comes out to upgrade back to the ultra lineup!!!

Your source says no and mine says yes. Believe what you want. :)

What’s your source?

I’m surprised no mention of battery life. Most people I know (and I know a lot) that moved to Garmin that was the main reason. It’s embarrassing having a battery life measured in hours when the competition measures in months on some models. Even the Fenix 8 lasts a good 10 days and that has a crazy bright flashlight built in.
My AW Ultra 2 lasts for 2-3 days and has a 'flashlight' facility that makes walking in the dark OK. The red light is good on camping trips and other occasions when you don't want to mess with night vision. As for the battery, I am with you - the more the better. I briefly considered getting a Corros Vertix watch, which has a battery that lasts weeks, but I like the integration of the AW with my other devices. My experience with the Ultra 2 has been fine so far and I enjoy and use its features almost as much as my iPhone. Having to charge every 2-3 days is not a big deal, but I cannot imagine having to charge a watch every day as some of my family do with their regular Apple watches.

I was a little surprised by how much I was satsified with my Ultra 2 purchase to be honest. For me it doesn't look like it is worth upgrading to the Ultra 3, but perhaps the model after that....

I've never considered charging my watch to be a hassle. I have to take showers - it can charge then. It doesn't need to be on my wrist while I'm in there.
Charging the ultra is hassle during ultra endurance events. I love my AWU 1 but its annoying to have to charge my watch during the midway point of the race. Thats the only thing that makes me consider a garmin.

Apple should make Watch Ultra truly standalone, without any dependency, not requiring other device to setup and use. No, I do not want an iPhone; even for free! Free your mind and your hands! Allowing to install any application including web browsers like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Edge, etc. Add a camera to read QR codes, etc; best if it is telescopic rotating retractable camera in the crown neck (protecting from dust and sweat, besides privacy). Then I am sold, even for 1,000 USD or more.
