What's interesting to me about the iPhone ecosystem is it has large sociological impact. A computer in your hand and all that. But lesser considered is the changes in daily behaviour in how you interact with the device. When you have millions of people simultaneously changing habitual behaviour and in concert with each other, it gives them a sense of community of a style that has never existed before. Not religion. Not geography. Not politics. Behaviour. Discuss.

Seriously. iPhone is a cultural phenomenon. Pretty cool to see.

I found a strange kinda gesture. If you hold on any of the top bar icons like battery, signal, time or battery it shows up as a larger version in a volume box style window. They could add battery percentage here or force touch into settings/clock etc in the future. For now it seem pointless...

You complained about a swipe being too low for one handed use, and then asked for keyboard to be lowered. The keyboard is where it is for comfortable one handed typing.

No I don't agree - the keyboard is there because it needs to match apps that haven't been updated yet. Without that bottom gap it'd be in different places for each app - it currently matches apps no matter if they've been updated on not. Over time it can definitely be moved down to match the distance between the bar and virtual home button you see in other full screen apps.

It is possible for one thing to be too low and one to be too high you know. The two don't contradict each other at all.

If this turns out to be the first iPhone I ever drop in 10 years, you can bet it'll be due to trying to swipe down from the home bar.

That stupid iPhone 6 was the only one i've dropped and then had to resort to using cases afterwards, no im back to case-less and using the iPhone like I used to, it feels like an Apple phone again! At least the glass is grippy so it shouldn't be dropped (it slides off any surface you put it on though!)

I can’t force close apps using that method on tip 2. It just reads it like returning to home screen. Do you have to be on iOS 11.1? Mine is on 11.0.1.

Exact same issue here! I can’t force close an app, at all. Anyone had similar issues or found a fix?

I hope they don’t move it down. I’ve been using Swipe keyboard on my X, and I really like it where it is (same as iOS keyboard).

Here's a graphic I created showing App Switcher access in a much much faster and more intuitive and 100% consistent way. Shhh, even Craig doesn't know about it ;)

And remember:

1. No pausing
2. No L-shaped gesture
3. No r-shaped gesture
4. No whatever-shaped gesture
5. No gesture at weird angles

Simply up! Boom and you're done!

More lesser-known gestures in this thread

Yea it’s more about how suddenly you “hit the brakes” on the gesture. If you let it coast and push the gesture bar away, even a short distance will invoke the home screen.

However, even a short distance can invoke the app switcher if you bring the swipe to a crisp stop.

Found another trick.

When you’re not on the home screen and want to get to home screen quickly...swipe up from bottom of phone and release at the top of dock. That will bring you to the home screen quickly.

You have to release at the top of the dock, don’t hold it. If you hold it the multitask will appear.

I thought A11 chip has blown the competition away, but I think that Geekbench test was really skewed. Obviously the iPhone 8 has blown any flagship Android phones it’s because it’s processing a much lower resolution display. I’m still stoked when I saw this video see it for yourself.

I don’t know if anyone posted this or not... but to close apps, once you have multitasking open all you do is hold down for a second and swipe up. This works every time. No need to hit the red close button.

Excellent. These are very helpful. Thanks!

Wow. What an inspired observation. I lament the loss of shared spaces and the erosion of institutions, shared perspectives, shared values and shared ethos that hyper-personalization and mediated (manipulated) social media has brought us. Your comment re-kindled my optimism for technology to contribute to shared, constructive experiences that strengthen community vs tearing it apart. Thank you @Rocketman. Namaste

Animoji is not working correctly when I wear glasses. When I wear glasses the Animoji shakes and cannot recognise facial movements correctly.

I have recorded a video but Macrumors has their forum stuck in the dark ages so I cannot upload it.
I noticed that, too, using my husband’s iPhone X.

Anyway, back on topic, I switch comfortably among two different variations of Android on my Samsung and my Pixel2, and iOS on my iPhone 7 Plus easily. Yet that has done nothing to prepare me for the attempts to use my husband’s new IPhone X. He’s been very generous letting me try it out at various times this weekend. I can’t help but feel like I look like a cat scratching around in its litter box. It’s definitely not an interface that’s easily and gracefully mastered in a couple of sittings.

I think I found another new feature, but for all I know it’s been known. I just haven’t seen it anywhere. If, when typing, you tap and hold on the keyboard, the keyboard grays out and you can smoothly move the cursor around like butter. This on an iPhone X with 11.1. Tried to attach a screen recording but wouldn’t let me. SO AWESOME!

Nah, it's a 3D touch / iOS 9 feature.

I think it’s there because they wanted it to be there.

They could at least fill it with something useful, pressing the emoji button could display a scrolling emoji bar there like the touch bar for instance. It's very easy to reach that space with your hand.

Personally I think moving the entire thing down one line is much easier to use one handed, it's less of a stretch from my natural holding position to reach the time, and it'd just look a hell of a lot better.

All these hidden non documented gestures don't sound very appealing. Oh how we will pine for the beloved home button and fat chin days.

aren't most of them simply replicating secondary uses of the home button - various combinations of double/triple click, or double tap (but not click) for reachability etc. Plenty of existing features on ios are not exactly intuitive - but you're used to them. People will get used to these too

It seems to me like Face ID and the True Depth system use the front facing sensors in different ways. Case in point, when you're in the dark, Face ID still works fine (using infrared), but Animoji and selfie portrait mode will tell you that there isn't enough light. For whatever reason, those seem to rely on the optical camera for their facial tracking, not the infrared one like Face ID does.

How to start the camera quick?

Love the way my iPhone 7 does. Just swipe the lockscreen. No unlock necessary. It remembers the last mode (photo, video…) if you activate that feature in the settings.

How to start the camera on iPhone X? Thx in advance for enlightenment.
