So do I contact the courier company or Apple?
I would contact Apple and be ready to provide that picture as proof. The damage could be the result of extreme heat due to a defective phone. If they claim no heat damage then contact the carrier.

Thanks will do. I will know more tomorrow anyway. Thanks everyone for your input.

It still looks like the black stuff is from external source. The gasket for the camera cover could not have left that much mess. This is quite strange and I would still have bet it was like eye makeup or a leaked pen but the OP insists that it was not there when shipped but was returned that way. There is nothing inside the iPhone that is that black, even the battery guts do not look that black.

A mystery that I hope the OP will come back and help solve!

Indeed. And maybe it's related to something that happened in shipping. A mess for sure. OP, best luck with this.

The casing isn't open in the pic. So if it wasn't like that when you shipped it then it happened in transit or Apple is lying.

If the phone was arriving to Apple in that condition, I doubt they would Apple would be "Lying" about anything. As mentioned, it could have happened in transit would make the most logical sense in something like this.

Hence, See post below mine.

I contaczed the Authorized Apple Service Provider and they say this is how the phone arrived. They say that if the package was damaged they would not have accepted it. so it means it got damaged in transit. Contacting the courier company.

Update, Apple replaced the phone but did not say what was wrong. The first place I sent it too wer taking chances. Im glad I had it returned and took it dorectly to Apple. It was covered by the guarantee. I think I will write a review on the first co.
