So do I contact the courier company or Apple?Excellent. It's the proof that you need. It overheated in transit. Needs to be replaced for sure.

I would contact Apple and be ready to provide that picture as proof. The damage could be the result of extreme heat due to a defective phone. If they claim no heat damage then contact the carrier. So do I contact the courier company or Apple?
Thanks will do. I will know more tomorrow anyway. Thanks everyone for your input.I would contact Apple and be ready to provide that picture as proof. The damage could be the result of extreme heat due to a defective phone. If they claim no heat damage then contact the carrier.
It still looks like the black stuff is from external source. The gasket for the camera cover could not have left that much mess. This is quite strange and I would still have bet it was like eye makeup or a leaked pen but the OP insists that it was not there when shipped but was returned that way. There is nothing inside the iPhone that is that black, even the battery guts do not look that black.
A mystery that I hope the OP will come back and help solve!
The casing isn't open in the pic. So if it wasn't like that when you shipped it then it happened in transit or Apple is lying.
I contaczed the Authorized Apple Service Provider and they say this is how the phone arrived. They say that if the package was damaged they would not have accepted it. so it means it got damaged in transit. Contacting the courier company. So do I contact the courier company or Apple?
