No, quad pixel sensor designs. Also, night mode is basically exposure stacking which is a traditional method for reducing low light noise, but phones do smart things like varying varying shutter speed for the different exposures if it detects motion so the moving objects have reduced motion blur while the rest if the photo uses stacked longer exposure times.
But sure, yeah, it’s all just dumb AI.
All is great, small / overly dense sensors are not.
Mirrorless cameras do all of this, have stacked sensors, use multi-exposure to achieve low, and high exposure shooting. Mirrorless cameras also have subject tracking, servo predictive focus, and can adjust aperture (can't do that on most phones), shutter speed, in some cases zoom, ISO, and even change in or out ND filters all in camera. Some even do HDR in RAW which lets the user (or their software pack) use better post processing than is on camera. I like machine learning and AI functions, just NOT tiny sensors.
I think people are infering that I hate camera phones, I don't. I use the hell out of them, and they take great images. What i dislike is the specification chase of going to 200 Megapixel for the sake of doing so. But if the rumor of Apple dropping Sony sensors for Samsung is true, that would be the only reason it makes sense.
Perhaps “people” are not the ones failing to understand here. The fact that so many do just that (use a case) should tell you that to most people, the phone is primarily a tool. Your “beautiful piece of engineering” ceases to be that the instant it hits a hard floor, possibly along with whatever utility it serves as a tool. As much as Apple would like to pretend in marketing materials, phones are simply not pieces of art for most people, never were, and will likely never be.
Agreed,
Phones (sadly) like Cars, and home appliances are just a commodity to most and the mentality is often to just replace the device as oppsed to repair / take care of it.
As someone who had to work really hard to get nice things, I still think it is sad when I see a newish Audi, BMW, Lexus / etc all beat up because an owner doesn't care enough to take care of it.
Bring back Nextel phones we could use as vehicle jack-stands 😉 .
