A simple reason other 'competitor' phones just don't touch the iPhone.

Anyone else think that a pretty big reason the iPhone just has nothing to worry about when it comes to competitor phones, is that fact it's called the 'Apple iPhone' and not the 'iPhone GH-5DOH' or something else along the lines? Plus the fact Apple only pioneers ONE phone, whereas as other companies can have hundreds of devices and the customer just doesn't know which one to choose, so instead of having to choose between a billion different 'Nokia N series' devices, they can just turn to Apple, a popular, well respected brand, and purchase the ONE phone they make.

Seems like a pretty big part of the iPhones success to me.
 
Supporting just one phone, new and with one configuration, definitely makes it easier for Apple.

Most other phone OS's have had to support everything from clamshell keypad phones with a 172x220 screen up to 800x480 touch models.

When Apple got involved with older phones (the ROKR), its UI came out poorly.

Its succsful because of its UI, large screen and ipod intergration.
 
Not to press any buttons with you Iphone lovers, but I am currently using a Samsung Instinct, which from what I can tell, is the next best thing, in America, to an Iphone. while the apps on the Instinct may not be as great as the Iphone (and why would they be, Samsung doesnt make OS), the things that I realy like my phone would be that fact that I get unlimited use for only $60/month. Also, I figured out how to hack my Instinct to increase the Internet speed, and clarity of the TV. I also figured out how to use my Instinct tethered to my laptop to use the Internet, whether it be USB or Bluetooth to access the 3G network. Works quite nice in that I can access the Internet any time on my laptop, as long as I have cell service. Just wanted to get some input from you guys.

This is very true. Nokia sells many, many more phones than Apple, but Apple still has the single most "best selling" cellphone. I don't really know if you could call this a runaway success though. If Apple sold 15 different models, I'm sure that none of them would be the world's best selling cellphone. I'm also pretty sure Nokia is very comfortable with their situation of not having the world's best selling phone.

This is also why we will pretty much never see an iPhone killer. The cellphone manufactures really don't care. They're still selling plenty of phones. It's more likely that the cellphone carriers are the ones fighting for subscribers and not wanting an iPhone killer per se, but an AT&T killer.

Sorry man but anything on the sprint network is not going to be the next big thing anywhere. Sprint just doesnt have the numbers that verizon and AT&T do. It's probably a great phone i'm not questioning that but the buzz around it is already dying down except for those retarded and stupid commercials lol.

to the OP: I agree thats a big part of the reason Apple has top notch marketing and knows how to hype people up about their products, that coupled with the popularity of the ipod will keep the iPhone on top for a while.

For those bashing Sprint; I had Sprint for 7+ years and never had any trouble with their network or reception. It doesn't matter if they don't have the numbers, they have the infrastructure to have an excellent network.

Now, their customer service and their phone selection is another story - both are seriously lacking. That's why I switched.
 
This touches on the larger point of what the iPhone really is: It's a platform.

We're used to the OS world looking like this:

1) MS Windows
2) Everything Else

I predict that in 7-8 years that list will change and these will be the most important operating systems in the world, based on user numbers:

1) MS Windows
2) Mobile OS X
3) Mac OS X (tie)
3) Android (tie)


Portable devices are going to become more and more powerful. Used to be that everyone had to have a desktop machine at home. But as laptops became more and more powerful they took over. Many homes now only have laptops. That's going to happen with pocket devices, eventually.

I can easily imagine many homes in the future not having a PC or Mac at ALL, but rather a combo of a smart phone, a tablet computer (running the same OS as their smart phone, not the full OS that laptops do), and something *like* the Apple TV. Put those 3 things together and people who don't play games or edit videos may ask themselves "Why do I need a laptop anyway?"

That's what makes the iPhone so important. It's not a phone. It's a platform. You notice that my list up there doesn't include "3 different Blackberry OSes." No, it's things like Android and Mobile OSX that are going to be the big players in the future, because they've focused on creating a software environment. RIM and Nokia are focused on individual deviecs. That's great for now, but it's not a long-term plan.

Others will figure this out eventually, but Apple has a HUGE head-start. RIM could have been the new Microsoft of 2010 - 2020, but I think they've lost that chance now. Apple took it from them, and Google is going to sweep up the scraps.
 
A family of 4 setting up a 4 iphone family plan.
Listening in on their conversation with the sales agent on why they want iphones
Dad - tech geek likes the apps and can customize the appearance for the family
Son - tech geek
Daughter - 3 of her friends have one but wish they came in pink (not kiddin)
Mom - is tired of carrying a phone and MP3 player to the gym. Wants to be able to download and watch her shows while working out, sitting somewhere enjoying coffee, loves the itunes interface EASY.

In my eyes the phone looks simple to use. It doesn't have to open, you dont have a full keyboard staring at you all the time, swipe touch scroll swipe press, one finger operation, good graphincs, itunes, and did I mention Itunes?
My wife who isnt that tech savy flies around itunes, loading, moving, selecting, deselecting and so on.
Apple made it easy and that is why it is successful

Just wait until she finds out there's no MMS. Talk about OMGZ!!!

But, I can see how she would want pink. I think if Apple offered different colors, the phone would actually sell more than if if they put a video recording software on it. Looking at the iPod, when the different colors came out, the Apple store seemed to be a lot more crowded (with teenagers).

I think you're right.

I'm a grown man and the orange Nano is VERY tempting to me based on color alone. I have an iPhone...I don't NEED a Nano, but darned if that color doesn't manke me want one!

A Pink iPhone would be like a nuclear bomb to a 15 year old girl's brain.

I am slowly geting over the lack of MMS.not giving up hope just not worrying about it as much

But most teenager's phone don't have e-mail on them.
 
Its successful because its built around OSX. The phone hardware is unfortunately crap (I know, I own one), no video, no mms, bluetooth transfer, video etc. But yet it still trounces all the other phones because of the software.

I'm confused. You said the hardware is crap, then you just listed several shortcomings of the software.

Umm. MMS, video recorder, and likely bluetooth are all functions that can be implemented by a firmware update - nothing to do with the hardware (even though the camera is lacking).

Either way it is still lacking them and still licking the competition. Really what you have said is another plus for the software.
 
they should release a pink iPhone to raise money for Breast Cancer.

That way they can also reach out to those teenage girls
 
Apple has helped AT&T so much because of the iPhone. I say the iPhone with it's updated models will be on top for the next 5+ years until something totally new comes out, which could be from Apple.

First it was the phones that has the cheap lcd screen and exposed keyboard
then it went to flip phones
from flip phones it went to the sliding phones but those did do as well as the flip phones
along came the smartphones
now we are in the touchscreen phase. a consumer friendly touchscreen 3 years ago was unrealistic.

I never said I didn't like the UI or the way the OS is implemented. It's beautiful and simple. So, I agree.
