now we are in the touchscreen phase. a consumer friendly touchscreen 3 years ago was unrealistic.

I have created touch friendly phone/pda setups over the past eight years for enterprises. So it was quite possible to do with the hard/software.

It simply wasn't being done for consumers. But it could've been, if everyone else hadn't been so tied to legacy systems and apps.

Touchscreens aren't going to take over. They'll just remain one of several types of setups, as they always have. Flip phones, sliders, keypads, etc aren't going away.

Anyone else think that a pretty big reason the iPhone just has nothing to worry about when it comes to competitor phones, is that fact it's called the 'Apple iPhone' and not the 'iPhone GH-5DOH' or something else along the lines? Plus the fact Apple only pioneers ONE phone, whereas as other companies can have hundreds of devices and the customer just doesn't know which one to choose, so instead of having to choose between a billion different 'Nokia N series' devices, they can just turn to Apple, a popular, well respected brand, and purchase the ONE phone they make.

Seems like a pretty big part of the iPhones success to me.
That's a big part of it yeah. Obviously folks like many of us here, know what we want, etc, but all the geeks in the world are vastly outnumbered by the casual users and it's most of those people who'll choose the iPhone for the very reason you've stated.

Not to press any buttons with you Iphone lovers, but I am currently using a Samsung Instinct, which from what I can tell, is the next best thing, in America, to an Iphone. while the apps on the Instinct may not be as great as the Iphone (and why would they be, Samsung doesnt make OS), the things that I realy like my phone would be that fact that I get unlimited use for only $60/month. Also, I figured out how to hack my Instinct to increase the Internet speed, and clarity of the TV. I also figured out how to use my Instinct tethered to my laptop to use the Internet, whether it be USB or Bluetooth to access the 3G network. Works quite nice in that I can access the Internet any time on my laptop, as long as I have cell service. Just wanted to get some input from you guys.
My girlfriend has an Instinct, and while it's alright, the interface isn't all too good, it's laggy, and has a horrid touch-screen. And considering that it's a touch-screen phone, I can't stand that. I used hers and it's hell to type on.

Another wanna-be iPhone bites the dust.

But, I don't think the casual user is picking the iPhone. In fact, the casual cellphone user is not even picking a smartphone as smartphones only account for about 10% of the marketshare (and sales are currently slowing a little). I live in one of the richest counties in the country (Howard County, MD) and spend a lot of time in another (Montgomery County, MD), but I still don't see many iPhones in the wild. All the nurses at work don't even consider it - they're all looking at these cutsie LG phones.

not to say you copied did or anything like that but this post is extremely similar to my titled "iPhone's top Competitions", if you were to ask me I'd say this is a remake of a thread, but seeing as it's still here I guess it's not. Once again, i'm not saying you copied

I'm going to refrain from pointing out the blatant contradictions in your post, and move on.

No I think its the User Interface and the OS implementation

I was one of those people drooling about the google phone... and then the G1 came out

You might be on to something. It never fails to amaze me how weak the human brain is. I've used it to my advantage-- years ago I took over a sickly business unit, and one of my first acts was to consolidate a bunch of related products that were, individually, selling in bupkis quantities under one umbrella model number. Within a couple months everyone was talking about what a genius I was for turning a moribund business unit into one with the "single biggest product in the company". Heh. So simple.

I might get flamed for this but my biggest problem with the iPhone is the fact that it is touch screen only.

Now a touch screen mixed with a slid out keyboard is what I like.

For example the pantec Duo or the AT&T tilt is more of a design keyboard wise I like.

A touch screen keyboard can not stand up to keys because it hard to next impossible to hit the exact keys. The sense of feel is very important.

Human arrogance never fails to amaze me.

Sorry to hear that her instinct experience has been so poor. I have hardly no problems with my phone being slow, or even having any coverage issues. It has only gotten better since I bumped up the buffer limits on my phone and make the Internet faster. And again, coming from a person who has no home network (yet) its pretty nice to be able get internet access anytime, anywhere because of my phone. Not only that but its fast enough that I can even watch Hulu videos in high def with no problem.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Iphone cant do this, and this is why I am happy with it. But still, it would be nice to have a UI that didnt look so home school, or even if it was user independent. But you know whats important to me may not be important to anyone else. Gotta do what makes the most sense to you. Good luck with the Iphone.

Is this for real? I remember stuff like this used to happen in 3rd grade. "mommmm. Jimmy's copying me!!!"

Where do you live? Here, the minimum you can get an instinct for is $100, and it's one of the worst phones I've ever used. I was excited when it came out, because I'm on Sprint, and I figured I could do that instead of switching to AT&T, but it didn't fly with me. Glad you like it, though, I could never get myself to like it  Curious about the money thing, though.

For those bashing Sprint; I had Sprint for 7+ years and never had any trouble with their network or reception. It doesn't matter if they don't have the numbers, they have the infrastructure to have an excellent network.

I agree. The handsets may not be as cool, but the plans have far more value than ATT and most importantly, the network is RELIABLE. Not only that, their better smartphones have real turn by turn GPS.

I just found this article on msn. The Garmin phone looks really cool.

Yeah, because it's a total iPhone rip off.

I disagree. I live in a conservative section of Colorado and there are at least 2 other people I know of at work that have iPhones. I also see plenty of customers that have them. Just today I spotted 2 people using them. I also know specifically of another man who comes in and uses his to comparison shop. All that just off the top of my head.

However, I do agree that it isn't for the casual user. Most of the people that have them here either a) are tech geeks or 2) are the wife's of well to do men.

haha, that's because I made a huge CONTRADICTION, to not see it is like you just didn't read the word in bold, letters, italics, and underlined (that word is contradiction FYI) :p
Haha, wasn't paying attention when I was typing my B

That's why you have the auto correction. It works great if people trust it, instead of immediately correcting every mistake they make.

Plus, I (and many other people) are a lot faster and more accurate on the iPhone/iPod touch than those awkward physical keys. I typed up an entire essay on mine, and only had to do minor correction when I sent it to my Macbook :)

Ha!! Seriously...get it in the hands of somebody on "Gossip Girl", or whatever, and they'd sell millions more

gossip girl had one character use an iphone in their pilot episode. too bad the entire premise of the show is based on MMS picture sending, therefore the iphone is considered dead technology for the show.

Its successful because its built around OSX. The phone hardware is unfortunately crap (I know, I own one), no video, no mms, bluetooth transfer, video etc. But yet it still trounces all the other phones because of the software.

i highly doubt most ppl who buy the iphone care that its built around osx. they just like it because it looks sleeky and 'sexy', regardless of the fact that its missing a ton of features every other smartphone has.

Sometimes. Sometimes not.

I often type in technical terms, which are "autocorrected" to ridiculous things if I don't fix them every time. Real pain.

So is searching for things in NY. Every time I type "ny" it changes it to "by", because the former isn't in its dictionary to "learn" from. Another real pain.

Being able to turn it off is nice, but it should be per application. If I'm doing a Google search, I don't want it. If I'm typing a text or email, it should be on if I wish.

I always better on a stand qwert keyboard lay out for a phone or other small devices. That sense of feel to me is important for me being able to write something with out looking at the keys. On the touch screen keyboards that lack feeling the keys slows me down and forces me to watch where my fingers are going.
