My question is... why do you need to have so many movies on your iPad at once? Even if your movies were an hour each you'd have 15 hours of movies, or about 5 hours past your battery life. Most likely you have more along the lines of 23 hours of movies though. Do you never take the movies off of your iPad?

If you want more storage get one of those hard drives that work as a wifi and stream to your iPad.

I actually have a European trip planned in September - 9 hour flight on the way there, 10 on the way back - with a handful of shorter flights (and bus & train trips) in between. I'd like to be able to watch as much as possible during those flights to kill the time.

Chances are, I won't have WiFi access during the times I want to watch movies (and I'm not willing to pay the airline any fees for shotty airline WiFi service).

For people going on trips, storing a large amount of movies is actually pretty helpful.

As for the comment on the iPad not being designed to store movies - I'd have to disagree. I don't think there are any set things the iPad was "made for" - I think it's just a matter of people using them differently.

I will say, though, that if you're planning on storing a ton of movies - the 64GB unit is really the only way to go - especially if you want to enjoy 1080p movies on that retina screen...

I have the Seagate GoFlex Satellite

I've had it since August 2011. I have had no problems with it - I love it. It's not much bigger than the iPhone so can easily be carried in a pocket or bag, and it does indeed create its own wireless network that you connect the iPad (or iPhone) to. Downside is that while you are connected to it wirelessly, you can't get to the internet, but if I'm watching a movie or tv show, I'm not really going to stop in the middle of it to check email. Or if I do, I'll check on my iPhone.

One feature that is kind of cool is that it can have up to three devices connected at the same time, watching different stuff.

When I travel and don't know ahead of time what content I will want to take with me, I take this along.

You are only watching the movies on your iPad right? If thats so, then you can start by optimizing the quality of the video files; on a small screen like an iPad the difference between 1080p and 720p videos will be hard to tell. You can opt for good 720p quality videos and save space. This is what I do; my 720P videos are sometimes nearly 50% smaller than a 1080p videos.

You aren't and they have. The GoFlex Satellite by Seagate allows you to stream content from a portable HD. I've read mixed reviews however.

I have a long trip tomorrow and I couldn't settle on what movies I'd like to watch on the trip so I decided to put as many in order to have a variety of choices to choose from

I had a similar situation where I spent 20 days in Asia flying all over the place. I looked for the GoFlex device, but at the time it was barely being released and I couldn't find one that could be delivered fast enough.

In the end I used SporkLover's suggestion. I rented Blurays from RedBox, ripped them to my HD and converted them using HandBrake. HandBrake made them FAR smaller in size but still in HD quality. I think I chose 720P for the resolution. In the end I had 9 movies on my 16GB iPad....including Avatar which was ginormous. As I watched each movie, I deleted it as well as the source files (unless it was a movie I owned). This way I may have broken the rules, but I felt like I honored the spirit of the rules (rental of the movie).

The latest firmware addresses the issue with Internet access. You can now connect to both simultaneously.

I understand the point of having a 64gb iPad for some people but MORE than 20 hours of movies? That seems excessive to me.

Being that I've traveled to Europe a few times, and mind you this is just my personal choice, I find myself sleeping more on a 10 hour flight than watching movies. I might be able to sit through 1 or 2 films (4 hours max) but generally I'm out like a baby until they give me food or snacks.

Back to the point... while I suppose it's nice to have a ton of stuff with you at once, I personally don't like sifting through a bunch of crap I never intend to get to. Even now I have a few episodes of AWAKE on my iPad amongst 19 other TV show videos and I'm thinking I am done with that show as it bores the living crap out of me... sames goes with having 80 different albums of music with me. I don't love EVERY Beatles song so why would I want to keep EVERY one of their albums with me? And of course this is a personal preference I would rather just keep a few playlists of songs I love and along with the handful of full albums I enjoy and save myself the headache of sifting through a ton of crap I never have intentions of using.

You hit the nail on the head. PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

I'd rather have all my stuff with me and what you call sifting I call browsing.

Go figure.

That looks like a really great product but it needs Wi-Fi which makes it useless for streaming movies on-the-go :(

You misunderstand. It generates it's own WiFi signal and IPaddress. You connect to it via WIFI from your iPad. Think of it like a Hotspot minus the Internet. You can access the media via your iPads browser, their App or other methods. No other WiFi source needed...just your iPad and the Seagate.

Sounds like it creates an adhoc connection between the two devices. Might be a good on the go option as long as there's power nearby.

Cheers,

How about deleting them after you've watched them? How many times can you watch the same movie? (unless it's....... :p )

I seriously had no idea that you could do Home Sharing with your iTunes movie library to the iPad or other iDevice. How neat! I already use Air Video, but this is a great alternative. And actually, a 720p movie that I'm "home sharing" right now actually doesn't even look a little compressed like it probably would on Air Video. It's always fun to find out something new when you think you already know this stuff well enough.

Didn't read all the posts above, but a skim and I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet. It's not an elegant solution, but it's what I do with my 16gb iPad.

Buy camera connection kit (~£3 on eBay), buy 32gb sd card, (~£20) and keep ~5gb (or 1 movie worth of space) free on your iPad…
Probably the clearest instruction for this that I've come across. I might have to try it in the near future. Thanks for this!

The OP never said this was a "need," but one persons' "want" is just as valid as the next so lets lighten up a bit shall we and just address the hows of satisfying that want.
"Lighten Up"? Why the attitude? The iPad maxes out at 64GB and the OP doesn't want to lower the quality of his movies so what's wrong with "re-evaluting needs" and thinking more realistically about what is on your iPad?

I'll fill 64GB because I can, but once I hit that fixed limit then It seems like common sense to start prioritizing what's really important or look towards streaming services. So what's with the lecture?

Lighten up Francis.

Lighten up Francis.

Thank you.

You might consider the Seagate GoFlex Wireless hard disk. That'll give you 500GB of portable storage for use with the iPad.

Can you explain the steps?

Seagate GoFlex Wireless hard disk is the same as Seagate GoFlex external hard drive, or no?

I have a 64 GB iPad 3 and I have a total of 15 movies on it, 7 of which are HD. The movies in whole take up 39 GB and so I only have 8.6 GB (after deleting unwanted apps) of available storage as 48.6 GB has been used. Is there any other way of watching my movies on my iPad, other than having to put them on my iPad?

Do you really need that many movies on your device? You can only watch about 11/12 of them a day so how about keeping a few of your favorites on your device and swap them out as needed.

Because I can. I don't see why I need to limit my movies viewing choices because of the iPad's storage limitations...

Really, because obviously you do have to limit your movie choices because of iPads storage. Post = fail.

Makes sense to me! Smartest guy on this thread.

Air video works over the Internet. So you don't need to be home but a decent wifi connection is recommended. I'm on vacation right now. The wifi is horrible I can use it and it looks good even at only 1mb/s the picture is decent. Problem is this free wifi times out every 10 minutes and I have to turn wifi on/off. So slow is ok as long as it stays connected.

Has anyone tried a Seagate Satellite 500GB hard drive with the iPad? Seems like it would work well in a situation like the OP's.

haven't had any success with avplayerHD or goodplayer but just updated the firmware over the weekend
will try those and get back to everyone
but i do know that you can access the satellite from the iphone, ipad and my MBA

So, does it work with AV PlayerHD?

I'm thinking of getting one.

no sure, i use oplayer ( i can watch avi, mpegs, mkv, etc ) also it works with goodreader (with new update) i use both with it and have had no issues
i don't use the seagate app really, too limiting

From what I can tell, the Satellite only supports WebDAV/Oplayer/Goodreader type of access after its been modded or perhaps via a Jailbroken iPad. This isn't something that's supported by the device out of the box. Yes or No?

neither jailbroken or modded, stock ipads (all three variants) and stock satellite with the newest firmware
all out of box and boom ready to go
i've only run the goflex app, oplayer, and goodreader and they all work without any difficulties
i mostly use it for movies (ripped from personal collection), photos, books and pdfs, haven't put any movies from the online store on it but will play with it some more and get back

:D

Just convert them to DVDRips. 650/700 MB movies = ton of movies on 64 GB iPad.

What he said ^^^.

Never ceases to amaze me how everyone just assumes you always have a wireless connection .

I travel quite a bit. And, on long flights, especially overseas, the videos on the plane are either ok or the screen is cr@p or broken. So it is not "wrong" of me to want to stick as many videos on my iPad as I can get.

I have a 64G iPad with 25 movies on it. They were converted using Handbrake in the iPad or Apple TV2 formats. They look awesome on my iPad3 as well. No need to try and get higher resolution rips because it's almost impossible to tell the difference on a screen that small.

While the GoFlex option is intriguing, I imagine battery runtime is reduced due to the need of having to stream it wirelessly. I get a full 8 hours of video, with battery to spare, with my movies directly on my iPad.
