Here's what I think:

I think very seriously that people who buy iPhones any more than a month after their release date is a little crazy. I've MADE money the last 2 iPhone upgrades. I just watch these boards and sell my iPhone a couple days before the new iPhone comes out for $600. I pay $300 for my new iPhone, I buy out my contract, and then I put $170 in my pocket. :)Why don't all of you do that? We're obviously the smarter people! We should be taking advantage of that! Lol

I like the theory, but doesn't it cost a lot to buy out the contract? There seems no room left to profit. If I were to buy an iPhone on contract here (instead of buying it outright which we do a lot here) its a contractual commitment for say AUD 2000 over 2 years. To buy it out from the contract after the first year just before the next refresh would cost about 1000 AUD, which is far more than what the market will pay for a second hand iPhone.

Why would Apple (or anyone) relaase an HD handheld device on something like the iPhone or iPod?

Because HD is the new fashion. And because it doesn't hurt if you can watch video + fotos on a big screen in nicer quality. You won't need 25GB for an HD movie, that would be BluRay quality. There is still the option for some Apple-TV-like HD. Not FullHD exactly but still much better than the current CD (crap definition).

IIRC, the current iPhone + iPod CPUs could already play some HD content if Apple enabled it. It won't be hard to do that in the next revision.

I doubt that it's coming soon, tho. It would make the Apple TV redundant for many people.

Yeah...fashion. But creating a feature because 10% of the user base will have the means or want to put HD is not a selling point internally to Product Management.

I agree that SOMEDAY HD will be on handheld devices just like dvd quality is currently available (and it took a long time in the history of the iPod to get dvd quality and a screensize worth watching it on)...simply because technology gets cheaper, faster, and more prevalent over time.

Also, HD has no real definition other than better than dvd quality. And the only format higher than dvd is Blu Ray. Sure, I can down-convert Blu Ray to a billion aspect ratios, etc. but there has to be a definition of HD. Hence I take Blu Ray as the definition of HD in the world of movies.

I think around February/March we'll see a bit of spring cleaning on the iPod touch line. So they'd remove the old 8 GB model and have two of the current-gen models at 16 GB and 64 GBs ($249, $349?) possibly with a camera. It'd probably be too soon for a 128 GB model though so that would wait until the September update. 2x 64 GB would be ridiculously expensive if launched too soon.

The iPhone may also see a little bit of a spring clean (eliminating the 3G, shuffling price points) and should gain 64 GB in Summer 2010.

I think the iPod classic will be phased out next September as anything above 128 GBs+ is fairly niche so they'd have that section covered by the 128 GB iPod touch.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that everyone keeps saying they should keep the Classic around. Why? For the nostalgia factor? Just because it represents classic Apple? If that's the case, I want the iMac G4 back!

I love how mot people that want them to keep the classic never owned one, don't have one now, and never will. :) It was a great iPod. I have one. I love it. I'm certainly not against Apple EOL'ing it though. It's obsolete.

I'm really looking forward to the higher storage capacities - particularly the iPhone, for all the Apps. I prefer a clickwheel on my iPod though. It just seems more natural. The Touch just isn't my style. Let that iPhone storage rip!

The only area where the classic is still better, besides price/GB, is battery power. The touch however can't exactly be called bad with 20 hours of audio.
The currently shipping iPod classic is rated for 36 hours of audio playback. The currently shipping iPod touch is rated for 30 hours.

128 gb ipod touch is a ridiculously crazy amount

For me, it's the threshold amount (ie, "I won't buy an iPod Touch for myself until it has 128GB of memory).

Why?

Because I have 55GB of music in my library (and that continues to grow) and a smidge of videos as well. Throw in the podcasts I enjoy, and 64GB isn't enough to hold it all without me starting to filter out what goes on the iPod. Even with a 64GB device (I currently have a 60GB iPod 5.5G, so I know this from experience) I would have to sacrifice my babies and inevitably end up wanting to listen to that one album I decided to take off the iPod for this week (I know, probably a psychological disorder :) )

IMHO, if you're deciding what to put on your iPod every day you're missing the whole point of it. In fact, the entire premise of the iPod versus the cheaper players was allow you to have ALL your songs at your fingertips (back when 1000 songs in digital form was a lot), whereas the cheapo 64MB Rios et al forced you to choose one or maybe two albums to carry with you for the day.

But, that having been said: if cycling data on and off a 16GB or 32GB device works for you, more power to ya. I just think you don't know what you're missing :)

In any case: 128GB makes me an iPod Touch owner. A camera would be gravy.

Great news - and right on track. I'm waiting for a 64GB iPhone, so hopefully this means that the 4th iPhone (I'm skipping the 64GB 3GS, even if Apple releases one) will definitely have this chip in it. I have already filled my 16GB 3G, and could probably fill the 32GB if I "tried" .. it's nice knowing I always have more room as I seem at acquire media at an exponential rate. Don't forget that the quality, and therefore size, has been increasing over years (Apple moving from 128Kbps AAC to 256Kbps, and of course moving from SD to HD video content, ect.)

That said, hopefully this is at least used as the iTouch is refreshed .. For it's price, although the interface is awesome, I would stick with the classic until the iTouch until it gets comparable capacity. While we're on the note, we can probably count on the classic sticking around for 6-18 months at most .. if The iTouch reaches 128GB shortly, it won't be more than 1.5-2 years until it reaches 256Gb. Bye Bye Classic, it's been real ...

Some people just want an mp3 player that holds a lot and that's it...like me. I like the fact I can have my iPod in my pocket and press buttons without looking at it. If the iPhone had a keypad and basic call and end buttons it would be perfect.

Everyone's needs are different. I have a 16 GB iPhone 3G, and an 80 GB iPod 5G. Once I passed 80 GB in my iTunes collection, I deleted a bunch of music I never listened to, and now I'm down to just over 70 GB. There's still a lot of stuff I rarely if ever listen to, and I'm sure I could cull my collection to make it fit on a 64 GB iPhone next year, and just have one device. But a 128 GB iPhone (which we'll presumably seen in late 2011) would be the ultimate for me: all my music, podcasts, apps, and a selection of videos on one device. Unless they come up with a new kind of content to fill the ever-increasing storage space.

128 gigs is a joke. a average computer is 150 which means you already used your computer memory up just for an ipod/phone. what a wast

I've upgraded my Mac's drive several times to cope with how much space my music, videos, audiobooks and movies/TV shows uses.

My current MBP has a 500GB hard disk - but I keep my movies and books I've watched or watch infrequently on my Drobo - with it's 3.6TB of storage.

128GB for apps, contact data, music and movies is not a lot if you listen to a lot of music.

As for those who argue that with "cloud-computing" 128GB is not required - they should try to use 3G on an airplane or subway...

Does anyone really need a 128GB touch? I doubt that it will a big seller for Apple, considering that the novelty and cost of 64GB eDRAM modules will insure an extremely high price. I suppose for those select few people that have the curious desire of carrying around months worth of music or a solid week of video...

Apple is really pushing the whole Apps thing. More space means you can get more apps and the apps can also get larger. Some of those navigation applications are over 1GB. Factor that in with music and videos. I don't understand how anyone can question why Apple would add more storage space in these devices.

now if we could just use firewire to update/sync our iphones so it didn't take so flippin long...

Music is srs bzns to some people including me. I'm far too lazy and dont have the time to decide what songs I want to swap in and out everyday due to there being no space. I have a 120GB Zune with Zune Pass so space can go quick. I also have stuff that I dont even like yet but will later because I have the chance to listen to it whenever. Im the guy who listens to the whole album and just doesnt skip to the singles because I want to know if their any good or not. Also, FLAC or any other lossless format would be amazing for this kind of space.

Plus bigger apps, etc...
