what would you possibly do with 64 gigs? i have a 16 gig iPod touch and i cant even fill that with stuff to occupy me while im on vacation for a week, and its not even 16 gigs. its a little over 14 gigs

What?! Only 14 gigs? Geeze, some small library there. My video library alone is over 500GBs.

My 32GB touch is currently fine for me as a movie player but a 64GB version would be twice as good. Load up a hundred movies (in low bit rate iPod touch size) and head off on a big arse holiday.

no, my iPod only has 14 gigs. i have about 3 gigs free

Lol some of you guys are taking it to far...... Really now a 3G network on and iPod is just not happening. See you'll notice in products, not just apple ones that while they might put cool features on the lower end variant/product they will simply not support it as much as the higher end product (iPhone). The best features are going to the iPhone BEFORE the iPod touch it's like the Varsity football team vs. the junior Varsity football team, good? Maybe but the good equitment is going to varsity first. Shoving another antenna into the iPod touch isn't what apple is going to do, you can dream but honestly the "I wish my iPod did this" is what gets people to by an iPhone whether you like it or not. I'm very impressed with my iPod though, typed up this whole damn thing with it 20x faster than I could with any other portable electronic device plus spell check.

cmvsm I think nailed it.

I think the iPod should have a camera and that will not make people go from the iphone to the ipod. People buy the iPhone just for the camera? No.

lol i agree with you. people have cazy dreams about the iPod Touch doing godly things that will probly never happen.

Wow, I am an early adopter of the iPod and one of the compromises was a lower storage capacity compared to the other iPods (well not really since my media library is not that big). I always thought of the touch as high feature/low storage player. I'm not used to it competing with the iPod classic. I agree if the iPod only gets a capacity bump that it would be lame. But seeing as how the iPhone 3Gs looks exactly like the iPhone 3G, it's highly likely that they won't change the appearance of the iPod. Maybe they'll add a magnetometer?

If the 3rd gen got GPS I'd get it in a heartbeat. Way more useful than a camera imo. I've got an actually decent digital camera if I want to take good pics, or a cell phone camera if I want to take quick crappy ones. Magnetometer would be cool as well, but I'd much rather see GPS added.

Magnetometer? Do explain I've heard of them but explain the use I might be a bit confused....

See details on the Compass app. It uses the magnetometer to show cardinal direction - which was is North on a compass.

64GB is coming. It's interesting to see that Apple is holding back on them. If the HD Zune comes through by September, it'll be interesting to see if Apple shows the Touch as progressing *a lot* - CPU, graphics etc (indicating that the 3GS was a stop gap) or whether they keep it fairly similar.

What can they add beyond GPS and magnetometer and an OLED screen, with 64GB high end model?

I'd say the other interesting thing is what happens to the other iPods - the Nano and the Classic has some changes, but will more come due to the progression of the Touch/iPhone platform? I'd imagine they could just squeeze more into the Nano/Classic - but that would be a very low incremental update. What could Apple do to really shake the iPod line up? Make the Nano a widescreen completely covering the front?

I sold my iPT to get the 3rd gen coming out, and watch it have a plastic back.

I'm guessing that it won't have a camera, but it will keep the metal back, gain an oled screen, and if it does have the plastic back, they will probably incorporate a glowing apple logo. That'd be cool. And they'll make it faster too with the new processor and chipsets. And of course, throw in a 64gb. variant and cut off the old 8gb.

If apple screws this gen up, I may even consider getting a zune as much as I hate microsoft, but the Zune HD looks a little cool. Just a little bit

Pfft, ill get an apple.

With al the media I have, for storage space, the classic won't due when it comes to the amount. I am sure it is that way for others as well. You have to realize that there are many of us that like to do as little as possible when it comes to moving things around. We like convenience and are lazy. Myself included.

That is all.

This will definitely help Apple to ward off competition from the Zune HD that will also be coming in the 4th Quarter this year.

I expect more changes to the Nano than we'll see with the Touch. The Nano sits at price points may of the comepetitors have far better devices at. Take the Samsung P3: It's got a 480 x 272 touchscreen, Bluetooth, FM with recording, Voice recording, and more, and is exactly the same price for 8gb and 16gb models as the current Nano. I think the Nano will get a wide screen, maybe bluetooth, maybe a camera, and more.

The Touch will get cheaper for each memory level. We might see a larger memory option. A plastic back will help WiFi and Bluetooth perform better. And there 'may' be a 10" touchscreen Pad that runs the Touch OS and the same apps. It'll look somewhat like the Kindle DX but with no keyboard.

I honestly can't imagine what Apple is going to do to make the iPod touch more appealing than the Zune HD, yet keeping it below the iPhone. Or maybe they think the App Store is where it's at and the hardware is good enough?

It will be interesting to see what Apple offers with the iPod touch 3G.

I think that it is safe to say we will see a 64GB version. So we will have 16, 32 and 64 at previous price points.

Other possibilities:
  • Camera.
  • GPS.
  • Compass.

Conceptually, how is Apple going to differentiate between the iPhone and the touch? Will the touch be an iPhone without the phone function? Or will there be more differences. My bet, is that there will be more differences to encourage customers to purchase the iPhone.

They can easily put more memory in.
They can put a faster processor in.
They could switch the WiFi/Bluetooth chip to a WiFi/Bluetooth/FM chip, or even one with HD radio as in the ZuneHD.
They've got the G-sensor. Adding compass shouldn't be hard. Expect a proximity sensor by gen 4.
Location features suck with no GPS. We'll get one now or in the 4th gen.
AMOLED screen. Inevitable.

iPod touch already is a lot more appealing than Zune HD. It`s Zune which needs an App Store if it wants to come anywhere near the iPT. Also IMO Microsoft will have to eat up a loss(or may be sell on a very small margin) on every Zune HD if it gives you the AMOLED screen, Tegra processor, and the same amount of memory the iPT will be offering at the same price point. And in case MS is stupid enough to price it higher than iPT, there is no chance Zune HD will do any beter than its predecessor.
