Safe Operating Temps?

Hi, I followed the original post and overclocked to 750/950 @0.955V and I've seen a very significant boost in frame rates for Battlefield 3 and Skyrim. My 6750m 1gb (early 2011 15") maxes out at around 86-87 C. Is this safe for 2 or so hours of straight gameplay? I really don't want to fry my computer yet I still want this huge performance boost to play the latest games.

What is the average operating temperature for the stock setting?

Any input so I can stop worrying about destroying my MBP would be greatly appreciated!

I am getting slightly lower temperatures than you, max is 84°C, usually hovers around 79°C though. That is while playing Skyrim with the same rig like yours and upgraded thermal paste ;)

I can tell you however, that your temperature is perfectly alright for playing ;) Only at around 100°C it gets unstable. My older Macbook Pro´s always hovered around 100°C while playing games....they are still in perfect condition :)

As for the temperature for the stock setting : Its probably going to be quite similiar if not a little higher due to the lowered voltage.

Breaking 10k in 3dmark 06 (850/1050 @ 1.050V), these clocks are stable, temps ~80, for some reason I only get ~8600 w/o oc'ing while the norm reported is ~9500, must have a bad chip or 2.3 cpu makes a 1k score difference :(

Sorry for digging this one out again, but i am curious on how you/Necriss managed to achieve a pixel fillrate of 13.6. With the same clocks, i am only getting 6.8...everything else seems same though.
What did i do wrong ?

Also you seem to have 16 ROPs...while i only have 8. I assume thats the reason ? How can that be, if we are having the same chip ??

Have you guys installed Lubbo's fan control? If you haven't do so and run your fans at a minimum of 6000rpm, and you should see a little drop in temp as well.

warranty

I have been overclocking successfully for some months now, but today the doubt took over me and i needed to now. It was said, some pagess ago that the warranty wouldn't be voided as long as i didnt tell apple it had been overclocked, but recently i learned that the BIOS log keeps every bios change in it, so it would be possible to know if i overclocked and therefor void my warranty.

Does this make sense? or is it complete rubish?

Listed under GPU-Z i have 8 ROPs, fill rate of 6.2 gPixel/s. Running at 775 core and 975 memory @.955v.

I scored a 31k in 3D mark 03.

What program was he using? It seems his release date is 2010 while the 6750m on mine says Jan 4, 2011. Also look a the bottom where it says 6750m, the "750" looks kind of funny.

wow, i have fill rate of 4.8 gpixel/s.. 3Dmark03 score is irrelevant, could you please install 3Dmark06 and measure your score?

thanks in advance!

Firstly, Macs don't use BIOS, they use EFI. Which is different, and newer.

Secondly, the overclocking described in this thread (using ATI Tray Tools) is a software overclock, not a hardware overclock, so as far as I am aware, shouldn't involve the EFI at all.

Was he maybe using the 6750m which was included in the iMac?
Maybe these have higher ROPs. Also, maybe the Macbook Pro 17" features a "better" 6750m ?

What does give more fps by the way ? Memory or Core overclock?
I have mine running at 800/960@1V, anything higher on the core side and i will start seeing artifacts in Skyrim...
Its not a temperature issue though as i barely reach 82°C with the newest DNA drivers...
Maybe not enough power for the gpu?

I have the 17" and as I stated earlier, it has 8 ROPs. I'm pretty sure you just increase memory bandwidth with your increase the frequency. Increasing the core is where you would see faster FPS. I run only @.955v to keep my temps down, but haven't been able to really achieve anything over that. I might try over volting to see if I can exceed 775 on core

Everytime I change my clock (either upwards or downwards), there is a bit flickering going on my screen. Does anyone have the same problem? I use early 2011 MBP 15" btw. ATT 1.7.9.1573 and latest ATI driver 12.3. :(

Black screen

Okay so I'm new to this stuff and I can say that I don't understand any of this terms and all, BUT as long as this is a guide... with just a few clicks I can try this. First I tried using ATT, but no matter what numbers I type... clicking Apply makes my MBP display turn off and I gotta restart it and reinstall ATT. I've read the comments to find a solution to my problem and there were some, but it didn't work too. I'm with the latest Catalyst drivers and I'm using Win 7 64bit. After failing like 5 times with ATT I decided to try MSI Afterburner aand look at this

msiafbr.jpg

Everything is on max and I can't move the slider further. Maybe that's normal... or maybe somethings wrong with the video card. I tried to play Crysis 2 on the OS X (not the bootcamp) and there was an error saying that my card is not supported. Is it possible to Apple to fail like this or I'm doing something wrong?

So any help will be useful cuz I really want to overclock it a bit to get a higher FPS in some games like Battlefield 3, Crysis 2 and Skyrim : )

Oh yeah and another thing... On my PC I'm using RivaTuner to turn the fan speed on max which makes a BIG improvement in FPS and all, but on the MBP RivaTuner says my card is not supported... another "not supported" issue : /

EDIT: whoa... even increasing the fan speed in ATT makes my screen turn off / go black... theres something REALLY wrong around here :|
EDIT 2: oh and... not only that nothing works, BUT I experience nasty frameskipping with games like WoW and Skyrim. Only on everything low aand 1600 resolution I can play normaly. This is one of the best MBP's so far how is that possible ? My PC is 5 years old with GF 8800 GTS 512 and I play the game on HIGH with 20-30 fps... ot the MBP I have 20 fps on Medium... ?!?! I really can't understand what's happening...

I'm pretty sure MSI Afterburner is already known not to work. ATT should work.

Have you tried running some benchmarks? Even just re-running the Windows Experience Index? Normal clocks I get 6.9, overclocked, 7.0.

Otherwise, with ATT, you should turn off the On-Screen Display. It seems to screw with a lot of other apps.

You should also try plugging in Core = 600MHz, Memory = 793MHz, VDDC = 1000mV into ATT, as that should definitely work, and if it doesn't you may have software problems.

First: that max displayed there is the default clock for the GPU, MSI doesnt let you overclock, has for the other problems, your GPU might be defected as i play wow with everything on, at max 1440x900 at 40 fps's with NO overclocking... have you tried downloading GPU-z and checking your temps? if nothing else works, try to unninstal your drivers and install a newer version. Keep in mind you need to remove the current ones first or the drivers will say you have no supported graphics card...

Hello everyone when i OC my graphic card here's what happend

My screen is changing colours and i still hear sound from the game but i can't do nothing ;/ can someone please help me and tell me what's goin on what that mean etc.

Mac OS X?

Ok, before I try this in Windows, I would like to know if their is any way to over clock my GPU in OSX. The main game I wan’t to play is Second Life. I get 100+ fps on full settings, until I enable lighting and shadows, then I get about 10fps. (I think they really need to fix their shader engine)
My other question is, which would solve my problem, will the clock settings stick from Windows to OS X? (I know fan speeds stick from OS X to windows, so...)

1) Not easily. I mean not without changing things on the GPU that really shouldn't be changed, risking killing it.

2) No.

Sorry for gravedigging, I've just been following this guide for a while now but I just want to say that when I use 800/900 @0.955 my GPU tends to crash A LOT 750/950 @0.955 is currently the best OC setting as it's the most stable. I've noticed a MASSIVE performance increase when using 800/900 @0.955 but alas I can't use that setting for more than 10 minutes before it crashes my GPU, recently it's been crashing every minute or so. Any help regarding this issue would help a ton.

...800/900 @0.955 my GPU tends to crash A LOT 750/950 @0.955 is currently the best OC setting as it's the most stable..

My best OC settings are 775/975@1,000v which scores 16200 in ATI Tray Tools, the temps are fine, but a little high

your setting 750/950 @0.955v scored 15700 on my machine
"only" at 85-86 Celcius

but this setting 800/900 @1,000v scored 16400
but gives a whopping 90 Celcius so I am going to stay off of it.

Your GPU is craving voltage!!! hence the crashes, if you up the voltage to 0.990v/0.995v it will be fine, hopefully...
but 800 is overrated, it doesn't get that much better, so I stay with 775

btw I use 12.4 drivers.
and I have changed my thermal Paste, before I did it, the GPU temps were lower because of the massive gunk was isolating the CPU's heat.
and I use Cooler Master U2 and I use the fans to cool the bottom and the keyboard (where it gets warm). it keeps the aluminum cooler.
and when the screen is maybe 115 degrees tilted it gets warmer for the CPU and GPU. So I have mine at ca. 100 degrees tilt.

well those are my experiences, I find fit for my needs to play Crysis series, BF3 and Metro 2033
and they are not scientific so don't judge me :D

What are your temps? Do you think that I can run this without the changed thermal paste and laptop cooler? Thanks for sharing your info with me btw.

Yeah you will be fine without Changing the Thermal Paste
I only did it because I was curious :) higher or lower temps..
and my CPU hit 95°C without a problem, so I gave it a shot, only lost 2-3°C over all on high load, GPU temps raised by 5-6°C, again since the massive gunk was not isolating it. but idle temps lowered too but I didn't really measure it.

88,5°C on my default settings 775/975@1.000v
I can run it for long periods without seeing problems,
but when I had no Cooler Master U2 I usually ran it at 750/925-950@0.995v

and sometimes it helps to use ThrottleStop, it may get it a bit cooler or warmer at times,
with BF3 it stabilizes most of the gameplay, but with a bit more heat.

in Metro 2033 it's better leaving Throttle Stop off, but I don't use TS anymore.

just raise the MacBook by maybe 2cm it will do fine

and somehow this time I prefer playing Diablo 3 on OSX

Would you recommend using your default setting without the cooling pad? Do you think it will get to dangerously high temperatures? I just don't want my computer to die out on me.

EXTREME OVERCLOCKING and no one has used liquid nitrogen ..... Sorry could not resist , this is just basic over locking of a laptop gpu....
