So, I've tried 880/990 and 870/990 at 1.050V, always get a bluescreen running 3dmark 06 ;b

Yesterday I tried 850 / 1000 at 1.020V. Played 4-5 hours of Crysis 2, max temp 87°, 3dmark06 12104 pts. Look safe. But today don't know why, he sometimes crashed. I will try another time, and if it runs bad, I try with 1.050V

I use exactly the same ATT profiles as Necriss, 0.855V, 0.955V and 1.020V.

Folks, Apple's MBP's already run a tad warm because of limited thermal management. That said, you introduce OC to the mix and the results may be disastrous. Do yourself a favor, use your beautiful MBP's for what theyre intended for...If you want those ethereal benchmarks on games, build a gaming PC.

Does Apple Care cover associated mishaps?

3DMark 11 scores:

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1098838;jse...11/1098838?key=zECDdhHXE9Jx6XuyrB8UYxCxP0MzSM

OC: 825 (Core), 1000 (Memory) @ 1.020V

Temperatures never went above 80C on the GPU. Needless to say, I could go higher, but I probably won't. It's just not necessary, IMO. Not for my applications. my basic OC with Afterburner was only 12% behind these results with no voltage modification.

edit: yea, here was my last regular OC (no volt mod) result: http://3dmark.com/3dm11/841000?show_ads=true&page=/3dm11/841000?key=jzXhYNMwZPCydNCyV0M5svCF4jEVeX (750, 925)

we're talking only a 1fps upgrade extracted out of the additional 75MHz on the core and 50MHz on the memory. While losing the ability to have the machine automatically drop the GPU to low performance when it's not being used.

Conclusion: I'll use ATITrayTools sparingly at best. Probably for the undervolt. Otherwise, I'm not seeing the value-add (1fps) for the added risk that comes with the volt modification.

You guys should post your 3DMark 11 results to see how they compare to my linked results. Then decide if it's worth it to use ATITrayTools over Afterburner.

3dmark is a synthetic test, especially the 2011 version which doesn't use DX9 that most games run on. There is definitely more than a 1FPS difference in actual games, but how far you push your card is up to you.

In ATT you can create profiles to automatically overclock when running games and returning to normal clock/undervolt afterwards. A hotkey can be setup for "set default clocks".

Right guys, I have spent the morning undervolting and testing!
I capped the cpu at 2.1ghz so the temps didn't affect my gpu temps. I also set the fans at 4200rpm (my gaming fan speed).

Those figures look nice, could you please add the idle power consumption for comparison?

Bump volts up slowly, if you're running 1.020 now go up to 1.030, 1.040 etc.. till its stable.

okay. I'll give it another try and see, then. I'll run FRAPS in Crysis 2 and see what the gains look like. :)

@Necriss : Do you use Catalyst drivers or Bootcamp drivers ? Which one is better for playing ?

I've done a complete reinstallation of Win7 64 bits. But now, ATT and GPU-Z don't want to run together, GPU-Z always crash when ATT is opened..

2014 Games

Hmm this will prove very useful when games demand a much higher level of juice that is so high i need to overclock my graphic card to be able to play it. (Maybe in the year 2014)
thanks for the guide

The Bootcamp driver IS a Catalyst driver. Apple don't write display drivers, vendors do. There are a couple of newer ATi/AMD drivers but they made no obvious difference when I tried them.

Tried 850 / 1000 @ 1.020V, 3DMark06 12119 Pts. Max Temp 87°C for the moment. Look more safe than before the reinstallation of Win7.

I've done a complete reinstallation of Windows 7 to run it better.

EDIT : 1.020V seems not enough, gonna try 1.030V. Since the beginning, my computer never crashed cause of temperature, it never go higher than 87°C.

You probably didn't notice a difference because you weren't running the program that they tweaked a profile for. That is why there are releases so often. Especially for popular games.

The 850/1000 1.020V POWER OVERCLOCK causes my screen to go black while played Starcraft II plugged in. I tried it twice.

do we know AMD's specs for the voltage for this GPU?

might want to use that as a reference point of how far to push the voltage up.

Me too. My computer never crashed cause of temperature, but I've got black, or white screen, and crash. I think clock is too high. I've tried 850 / 1000 @ 1.050V, same thing. 830 / 1000 @ 1.020V runs better. I'm gonna try at 840. 850 is definitely too high, it runs for about 20 minutes - 1 hour and crash, even if the temperature is not too high.

Try bumping volts up slightly to 1.025 or 1.030, 850/1000 works fine for me but everyones chip is different. If its still unstable, drop the core speed.

wow dude thanks bigtime, ive been playing FSX and after afew mins of game time my fps drop because of the cpu throttling down, ive used your underclock setup, i take it lowering the voltage will lower temp and provide longer chip life?

also, will it continue throttle down the gpu when not in use?

Yes lower temps is always better, but unless you're planning to use your macbook for a decade I wouldn't worry about hardware degradation from overclocking.

ATT disables powerplay (auto-throttling) if clocks/volts are modified. Either 1) Setup hotkey for stock card settings 2) Game Profiles
Both are explained on the first page.
Have fun!

Try XPlane on OSX. I'd say it is much more realistic and graphically beautiful. :)

Thank you!, just one question, i take it when it's running at the lowest clock, the voltage stays the same?

The reason why i fly fsx is because x plane lacks the big addons, namely the PMDG 747 400 and my newest baby the Md-11, i didn't even like md-11's when i started flying it. i guess with fs development team away x plane will eventually take over. although i think iv'e seen carenado planes for it, carenado has some really high quality stuff.

it's safe to assume then that the core clock gives you a better bang for your buck than a memory OC, yes?

If you're referring to 600/800, 0.855v. Then yes, I use that for playing movies/youtube. It can be underclocked and undervolted even lower, i.e. 400/600 check ninja2k's undervolts on page 2.

yup, gddr5 is already fast enough, although I've noticed a minor improvement in fps going from 800-1000 mem in crysis 2.

I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't undervolt their card to gain lower temps. They might not be interested in performance but everyone wants a quieter laptop/kids.

Good guide, although I had trouble setting a default or going back to default clocks. Do I have to make a default profile? I made an undervolted, OC'd profile, but I didn't know how to go back to default. I would go to profile and click set to default clocks, but voltage didn't change and the clocks were at like 100/150? So I changed it to 600/794 or whatever. When I applied my screen went black. I had to do a force shutdown. Really only interested in setting up an undervolt + 750/950 OC.

If I need to make a default profile, do I keep the voltage at what it shows at first? like 410 or something? Sounds weird.

Also GPU-z crashes everytime ATT is up. If I close out ATT, GPU-z can open; if GPU-z is already open, and I open ATT, then GPUz crashes.

I got the game profile working to auto load upon Crysis 2 load. Unfortunately after it quits, it does not go back to stock clocks. Is that how it's supposed to work? I was able to make a hotkey to go to bios default clocks though to make it go back to normal after a minute.
