So, I've heard in several different threads by several different members
why they think there will/will not be a new iPhone revealed this summer,
regardless of how BIG or small an upgrade it will/will not be.

I've seen several good reasons why you think there will be one revealedas well as some really good reasons why there wouldn't.

I'm really creating this thread to have a collection of thoughts to look
back over, rather than reading a really well thought out post and later
forgeting where that post actually WAS, to never be read again, lol.

Use this thread if you want to discuss your reasons, argue and/or maybe
post links to new rumors you run across to support your reasons.

My Reasons I think we...

Will:

These (speculated) inventory clearing stories we're already starting to
hear about. The big one for me is the Fido one, where they aren't
ordering anymore iPhones in April.

iPhone 2,1...3,1...iProd?

The Famous one liner "1st Gen. Owners Need an Upgrade". :D

2 year old technology is still running this thing (pretty well though).
Other phones are catching up and even surpassing, spec wise. 2mp camera,
c'mon now, you mean to tell me they wouldn't even upgrade that?!

WWDC '09...nuff said.

Schiller said so...nuff said.

There are numerous rumors of internal hardware upgrades that could be a
possibility. 'Marvell' proccessor Rumored, 32gb chips should be ready,
something from PA Semi as its nearly been a year since aquired...the
lists goes on in this category.

As most would agree, a need for atleast a RAM upgrade. Think it will
crash even more when 3.0 is loaded on there?

Steve Jobs return? Reveals new iPhone? Video-chat via iPhone from
hospital bed?

And I'll end this section (for now) with, because every other iPhone
site I've visited (MANY) are expecting something in some shape or form.

Will Not:

These (speculated) inventory clearing stories could actually just be
Apple's way of getting the 3G in as many hands as possible to experience
the (pretty much) NEW iPhone that 3.0 will make it. Still, the FIDO
story. *shrugs*

3G is still selling strong, why change it up now?

Economy is bad, how many are actually gonna spend 500 bucks on a new
feature rich phone? (Raised hand, I would :D)

Incompatability between phones as far as higher to low quality apps
(some people would be angry).

Why would they release 3.0 along with a new iPhone and then turn around
and tell all developers, "now you have to develop for this phone as
well". Of course this is assuming the upgrade would be substantial
enough for this to be the case. Although, they're gonna HAVE to upgrade
at SOME time, so...

Millions upon millions have the 3G and are not upgrade eligible yet, I'm
imagining a lot just adopted this past Christmas as well. And I'm
willing to bet there aren't as many still holding on to 1st gen iPhones
as there are 3G owners now leading me further to believe that the whole
theory behind "1st gen iPhone owners contracts ending so there's gotta
be..." to not be that big of a deal. Maybe all these newer deals and
incentives to upgrade we've heard popping up here lately is a way of
them saying "look, nothing new is coming so you might as well upgrade to
the 3g now and enjoy."

Schiller said so... (But I don't think he specified hardware) iPhone
cycle in June could just mean a spotlight on iPhone in general. (See
WWDC event photo for '09) As in software.

WWDC will be reserved for software only, iPhone 3.0 and Snow Leopard, no
"one more thing".

iPhone is Steve Jobs "baby". You think they are gonna let some other
shmuck reveal a new bad@ss iPhone? He said 'end of June' correct, we all
read the same thing.

In ending, I'll remind those that do not already know, I do not have an iPhone "yet" and have been waiting a VERY long time to get one (2 years). My T-Mobile contract has ended recently and I'm waiting to see what's next before I jump in. Like most, I wouldn't mind seeing some improvements/additions to the next gen soon (like WWDC) but if nothing new by then, I will be perfectly happy with a current gen 3G iPhone.

Can't Wait. This is going to be a LOOONG 2 months ahead of us! :D

Can you provide a link? I don't recall him saying this - and even if he did it all depends on the context. If he said there would be hardware upgrades every year, he was probably talking about storage capacity increases and other *minor* hardware updates - because the development time for a "new phone" (i.e. a brand new iPhone) wouldn't allow Apple to release a new phone every year. Even you must recognize that. If there is an upgrade, it's probably going to be solely a storage capacity increase (i.e. a 32GB iPhone 3G).

I can dig up the link for ya later but he did say something "along the lines" of this.

I was never really clear on that story. I remember folks argueing that David Pogue entered the (June) after he quoted Schiller, and that Schiller never actually said 'June' in the article, that was just the assumed time frame, I guess being WWDC.

And I must say I have to agree with you on this one Milani, the dude didn't say "Oh yea, Hardware upgrade on regularly scheduled cycle", I think he sort of meant, ya know, we do iPhone type "things" around June and so forth meaning that could mean ANYTHING! Software, Hardware, etc...But with the last 2 WWDC and iPhones being released and focused on then we assume there will be this year.

I certainly hope Apple has something kickass up their sleeves as they do every year but I'm not 100% sold on it just yet. ;)

Just pretend all you can see is the line about reading reasons in other threads and not being able to find them again. Enter the "search function". Think of it as "spotlight" for the forum. All these redundant threads are getting rediculous.

Painfully posted from the iPhone, which doesn't pan in form fields, delete paragraphs of text, or easily move the cursor down several screens of text.

P.S. When replies don't come fast enough when continuously refreshing the forum page and you're thinking about clicking "new topic" - please don't.
 
- 3G was revealed at WWDC last year.. I'm guessing the next iPhone will be released at this one, even if it's just a 32GB iPhone 3G.. It's pretty much a standard release schedule.. at least it has been thus far.

- Those strings that hint at new devices found in the new OS..

- Some places are clearing out stock (including my local O2 store! no more iPhones are being ordered), and some carriers are allowing people to sign up for lesser contracts, ie. for like a year instead of 18/24 months.

- 1st gen iPhone owners contracts are coming to an end. Whilst I'm sure a lot of people upgraded to the 3G, there are still those of us that didn't want to buy a completely new handset and contract for minimal upgrades. 3G + better sound quality + plastic back isn't really enough to convince me to shell out another £100+

You know that there definitely will be a 3rd Generation iPhone this summer? Apple updates every single computer (except for the Mac Mini) and every single iPod at least once a year, no matter how well they're selling. Apple gets many people, even non-Apple geeks to buy their next generation product even if they have the previous one. They do that with the iPod Nano, which always sells very strongly.

That's what happened with the RAZR and other Motorola phones. It was selling strong, so Motorola decided to wait years and years to update their major phones (specifically the RAZR) and because of that they became unpopular because they weren't as current or up to date as other phones.

There are now a whole bunch of wanna-bes after two years. Remember, there seem to be a number parts of the US that people of unhappy with ATT as well. So without a new something BIG people will wander.

I agree with Shabbis. There are a lot of phones out there that can easily give the iPhone a run for the money (due to the ATT constraint) with some of the features they have and the iPhone doesn't.

Plus, Apple makes it a habit to upgrade their products usually on a yearly basis, why stop with the iPhone. The iPods, Macs, etc... :rolleyes:
