Snippet:
The ATI Radeon HD 4890 graphics card is expected to be integrated PCs from OEMs such as ASUS, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, and MSI. The cards also available immediately for $250 (and priced at select etailers as low as $230 after mail-in rebate).

Funny how ATI's brand new card, the successor to the 4870, can be had for only $250.00. Meanwhile, Apple demands $350.00 for a card now made obsolete by its successor.

I'm looking forward to seeing the "Race to Dump the 4890" thread that will no doubt materialize here. And I'm also looking forward to picking up one of these cards and making it work in my Mac Pro, while simultaneously giving the finger to Apple for expecting us to pay $350.00 for a card that retails for $179.00.

Feedback has been submitted to Apple via the Mac Pro feedback link on their site. I made it clear that the 4870 pricing is ridiculous and an insult to the informed consumer. :apple:

So? Flashed 4870s have both their DVI ports working perfectly, and generally people like not having to buy an adapter on top of the price of their new computer and graphics card just to get their displays to work.

He was bringing up a valid point for people who do have the Apple 24" led displays. You must use an actual Apple 4870 or GT 120 to be able to use them.

I would like also to see a 4890 in my mac pro 09. The good thing is that its use only 268W in full load power, and 65W idle. And the Radeon HD 4890 requires only two six-pin PCI-Express power connections.:D

Do they ever really read on customer feedbacks from that link...? And did you feedback Apple with that finger of yours..? :D :D :p

Because if you don't, I do... for killing off the 1st-gen Mac Pro owners by denying them proper video graphics upgrade options, other than the crappy X1900 and the over-priced 8800GT. Even the AASP (Gold service) in my area had the guts to quote me $550+ for an 8800GT (as opposed to $279 at the online store) which was already long obsolete in the PC world.:mad:

THat is because if they order it, Apple demands that they fit it. I had the same problem ordering it from my local store. They said the policy is stupid and to order it myself from Apple.

If any of you guys had bothered to read the Toms Hardware review you'd realize that the 4890 is only marginally better than the 4870.

The main advantages come in with things like the better power management that reduces the idle power consumption of the card when using it in "desktop" mode.

Netkas said the device id isn't in the kexts, as I recall.

Be nice if it showed up.

I also think that ATI device ids have become somewhat fluid, like Nvidia ones.

Despite the fact that this card is "marginally" better than the 4870, it's retail price is still 100.00 cheaper than what Apple wants for its mini-displayport infected 4870.

And when is the last time you saw a PCI card, etc, from Apple that didn't have the Apple Tax (tm) applied to it? If you don't like what Apple is offering then don't buy. The fastest way to force a vendor to change their lineup and reduce pricing is to refuse to buy their products.

It's interesting that the 4870 512MB and the 4870 1GB had almost the same performance in the benchmarks.

Why is that interesting? If the game doesn't use more than 512 GB of memory (most games don't) then it's pretty much irrelevant if you have 1 GB memory. Ofc they'd perform the same.
