MacBook Pro CPU at 157 Degrees F?

Is this even possible? This is what iStat Pro is telling me about my CPU.

I'd just like to know if anyone thinks this is possible because to me if my cpu was at 150 i would think it would be melting.

My fans are at 2000 rpm as well.

Yeah mine usually runs between 85º and 90º Celsius during encoding. Yours is perfectly fine.

Or in Fahrenheit 185º and 194º.
 
Ah, ok, well thank you guys, I was getting worried for a sec.

This is my first Mac so I wouldn't know a lot. Got it in January.

Well within normal. Mine's at 170, at the moment (CPU A Temp Diode), fans at around 2600. Normal is right around 155-160, when I'm not doing anything. Fan minimum speed is 2000 (they're always running).

Under load (running Handbrake), it gets to about 190ish. The fans will ramp up to keep temps below that (around 183) (also, seems to try and keep bottomside of case at or below 90).

I believe the max temperature is 105C (221F) (for 45nm), so you're nowhere near any limits.

157F is really cold! i would be slightly concerned if it got to 157C but thats not likely.

If you want to make it colder you should close some of the flood of monitoring apps you have going on before your Macbook drowns in them, you'll notice your battery life significantly increase too.
 
As a side note, does anyone know when the fans generally speed up; ie, at what CPU/GPU temperature (or is it some crazy combination)? I only ask because on my Late '08 I installed SMCFan Control, and while I do run the fans at 2500 regularly, I don't think I've noticed them increasing automatically. It may not be getting hot enough, but I'm scared that it won't when SFC is 'supposed to'. I wasn't sure what temp that happens at so I haven't been able to properly test it out.
 
I imagine it depends on the machine. The UB would be different than the Al. On mine, they start to ramp up shortly after the CPU A diode hits high180's(F). Then, they give the heatsink a chance to absorb some of the heat. Once the CPU temp starts to fall and stabilize [at around 183F], they seem to try and maintain an external case temp of high 80's to 90F ("bottomside sensors").

These are just my observations - I don't have their exact algorithm. This load test didn't stress the GPU much, but kept both CPU cores at around 90-100% load (Handbrake).

(btw - I use Hardware Monitor. I find the graphing feature to be the most useful - you can compare software loads vs. actual current and power figures vs. fan speed, etc.)

That's great though, thanks for the info. It's just my (I forgot what SFC measures, I think the CPU, or some average of all, but I'm not near it to check) Al MBP runs at around 100-120*F while doing the basics with the fans at 2500 (vs. the default 2000), and sometimes when it reaches 150-170* I don't notice the fans increase in RPMs through the SFC menu item.

I have only had the machine for a couple weeks, so I'm not too familiar with its fan cycles during intense CPU load yet. Also I haven't tested Handbrake yet (preparing my head so it doesn't explode when compared to my old PM G4 which I've had for 10 years...). Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it.

Also, hearing that near 200*F temps aren't completely unusual is nice to know from the previous posts. After reading about the potential nVidia issue I have babied the machine since I got it. ("OMG it's reading 150*! I should stop whatever I'm doing and turn the fans up!")

That's pretty high. These Macs really can withstand just about anything.

Hm, so your saying that the Handbrake monitor is better than the iStat? Or you just find it more useful.

I don't even understand how the they get the readings, it's not like the MacBook Pro has a built in thermometer? ...Or.. does it?
 
iStat shows my brand new (well, a few weeks) old White macbook operates around 150-160 for normal web surfing... so I think you're right in the butter zone...

It has loads, both your Graphics cards have their own, and your CPU has one, a few other things have one too, they're called diode thermometers. Some people say that if you get more than one temp reading for your CPU then it means each individual core (dual or quad) has their own thermometer but i dont think this is the case.

BTW...Apple does not sell a LAPTOP computer. it is a notebook computer.... because if you leave them on your lap too long you'll begin to burn. The case in the back can get well over 140 F without much going on and mine gets up to 165 F when running Fusion. At 165 degree you can begin to cook eggs on your MBP. 😱
 
Ah, ok well thank you guys.

The reason why I'm concerned about the temperature is that I want to leave it on overnight to download a couple things but I'm afraid it may over heat or something.

Thoughts? Should I be concerned?

I've never turned mine off apart from to install the odd update.
 
Macbook overheating

I am new to macrumors forums so i am not sure if this is the rite place for me to ask the question abt macbook overheating.

I have a 2007ish Macbook (not pro) and it was running fine till last week. Now my mac gets heated very soon. In as little as 5 mins my fan stats operating at full speed( 6200 rpm) and the temperature is around 170 F even though i am using firefox, safari and mail . Also the battery last for only 20 mins on full charge while it used to last 1.5 hrs till last week. What should i do ?? pls help.

Are you sure you're not running anything that's CPU intensive?
Should check activitiy monitor and see what's the biggest CPU hog.

Try resetting the SMC. "Apple Portables- Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
 
So let me ask as basic question..

Did you get Apple's extended warranty? Have you contacted Apple Support?
have you make an appointment at an Apple Store with a Genius?

There is one more thing you should try: Resting your PRAM.

After this, your only recourse will be to get Apple's assistance. i hope you live near a store.
