I'm just curious...
Everywhere I see those framerates in situations like "in Ogrimmar", "in Durotar",....but what is the framerate in a 25 man raid ? Say in something like Magmaw, where usually all the stacking around the boss and the aoe effects going on kill the framerate.

I'm more curious about if the OP will be able to play at all because he ordered 1600Mhz memory, those won't work on the 1333Mhz RAM-using iMac will it? Not that I can say for sure but... I heard a lot of times I couldn't put memory over 667Mhz on my mac mini.

It will work, the chipset in the 27" iMacs should support it too.

Im the proud owner of an TB iMac 2011 21,5 basic, and it really kicks ass..
There is no need at all to buy the biggest and fastest iMac, if wow is your addiction..
Graphic settings:
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Multisampling: x8
Rest on ultra
Shadows: Low
Sunshafts: Off
View Distance: High

Im getting awesome fps on 30+ in 25 man raids, even at magmaw, sinestra, conclave (rohash platform).
between 30-60 in Ogrimmar, depending on where you are at, but not any lower. And outdoors it really fluctuates, depending on the zone, but still above 30.

Im using 40+ addons..

JoeDK, the 27" iMac's native resolution is a whooping 2560x1440 which would require something entirely different to run smooth at compared to say 1920x1080.

Those of you playing WoW on iMac's, can you register ANY difference between low/Ultra or on/off on settings like Liquid detail, Sunshafts, Particle Density, Texture Filtering and multisampling? my FPS doesn't change a bit when messing with those settings. I' think the settings are broken in the current version, at least on MacOS.

ok, i take back my statement about the impact of the chosen display resolution, it really doesn't make much of a difference in terms of FPS. I can't believe how well it runs! setting shadow quality to "Good" let's me average around 80fps in a pretty crowded Orgrimmar. STUNNING!!!

I'm not a hardcore WoW player by any means, i only play to help my 6yo son and, have some "quality computer time" questing and leveling on rainy days (we are both lvl 61). Normally i play WoW on my MBP, or i7 server and use a logitech anywhere MX mouse. I'm now getting used to my iMac's magic mouse, but cant really figure out how i want to move around in the game with only one mouse button. If any of you guys play with the magic mouse, please share your control settings :)

The framerate killer in towns is not the video card -- it's the disk. Loading and unloading textures for all the people leaving/entering an area murders frame rates. I remember friends going from an HDD to an SSD and seeing a 20-30fps bump in Dalaran by just adding a solid state drive.

The Magic Mouse sucks for gaming. Any type of game except maybe solitaire.

While SSD will most definitely help, is your system paging/swapping while playing? If so, more ram would help as well.

agreed. also WoW is cpu intensive. my i5-2500k OC'ed to 4.5 + Crucial M4 SSD + 6950 2gb desktop card does wonders in WoW

Anyone running this at native res (2560 x 1440) with ALL settings on ultra and playable in OS X (Im hoping for a steady 60FPS)

Im looking into the viability of finally ditching the PC rig as I do not game much anymore but want the ability to game well if I so choose.

Not going to happen. You have to tone down some options (shadows and water) to get acceptable performance. I get between 30-60FPS, depending on location (v-sync on).

My last PC was:
8GB RAM
AMD Quad core @ 3.7GHz
ATi 6850 GPU
23in 2048x1152 display

and it CRUSHED WoW on Ultra, on the new raids, battle grounds, and the old 25+ person raids. I only lagged when Org had some event going on, but might have been related to disk access.

The iMac as:
higher resolution
faster CPU
faster GPU

i would expect the CPU and GPU to cancel out the resolution of those add to the iMac being well more than capable to handle WoW on Ultra

The GPU in the iMac is not really faster than the 6850 desktop version.

agreed. the 6970M does not come close to the 6970 Desktop Version. the desktop 6970 would gaurantee handle WoW on ultra everything even with shadows.

If anything, it's slower, but by like 5-10%.

Playing WoW in 10.6.8, I get 60fps all the time. Haven't been in a 25 man raid in a while (maybe when Firelands hits next week,) but I'm happy with the GPU performance.

I turn shadows to lowest, liquid detail to lowest, and sunshafts are disabled. 2x anti-aliasing and 1x multi-sampling for me (rather have the guaranteed 60fps with V-sync on, eye candy isn't as important than running at native res, any other res looks fugly on this screen.) Added benefit of keeping the graphics fairly low (for this machine,) is that the fan doesn't come on for the GPU. If I turn my vsync off and let the FPS go to max, I get 200fps, and then the fans start coming on.

On Win7, I can turn up the graphics and still stay at 60fps, but the GPU does heat up and my keybinds don't translate over that nicely from OS X, so I play in OS X.

And yes, the SSD is huge for zoning in, hearthing to a populated city, etc. WoW from the character screen to play is like 4 seconds max for me. Scrambling to reconnect after a disconnect is even quicker. Takes longer for me to get my authenticator code, press the button on it, and enter it.

Enable right-click in System Preferences?

I don't play WoW, but playing Civ I quickly discovered that ticking the 'secondary mouse click box' under system preferences was a boon.

Being an avid Diablo player back in the day, though, I really would want something else than the Mac default mice for action rpg or mmorpg's.

Norne, the problem is that usually you run in WoW by pressing left and right simultaneously, and while you can right and left click the magic mouse, both can't be accomplished at the same time....unfortunately

I realize that thumb buttons (back and forward) would be nice to have as well. So what DO you guys do, do you have a second bluetooth or cabled mouse connected but turned off on your desk, or don't you use the magic mouse at all?

BTW: does Liquid detail, Sunshafts, Particle Density, Texture Filtering and multisampling change your FPS in WoW running OSX?

Where do you setup Antialiasing, can't find it anywhere?

You should be able to turn AA up to 4x and AF up to 8-16x and have a negligible impact on performance. Especially since you keep vsync on. Also make sure to try to turn triple buffering on if you use vsync (i THINK this option is now available under OSX). It should help increase/stabilize framerates when using vsync, at least it does so under Windows quite well.

Wasn't my system, was a friend's, though I can guarantee he wasn't paging to disk (8GB or more, and WoW's commit charge I think will never really exceed 1GB -- the most memory intensive MMO right now is SWToR, and its commit charge still won't hit 3GB). Most game engines are a bit notorious for blocking I/O.

WoW particularly because it not only reads them from the disk, but is updating its model and texture cache. If you profiled a system in Dalaran during WotLK, just sitting in front of a bank resulted in *very* significant disk I/O from all the players in the area needing their models and textures read from disk.
