It just goes to show that these high frequency Samsung chips can heat up like laptop CPUs when pushed to the max and will cause motherboard frying. It's probably over 100 degrees Celsius on the die while it's about 60 degrees Celsius on the surface of the back

This is complete and utter nonsense.

The overheating fault the OP describes is a commonly reported issue covered in another thread which has been repeatedly been confirmed on phones containing both Samsung and TSMC chips - both of which run at exactly the same frequency FYI..

Transistor leakage in the Samsung chip What else can cause excessive heat output other than CPU and battery?

What excessive heat? As previously stated, the specific overheating mentioned here is known to affect both Samsung and TSMC chips, so if one has leaky transistors they both do.

Went to the Apple Store for my appointment. The Genius Bar ran their quick diagnostic but found nothing wrong. I was hoping, but not expecting, that they would help me for this issue. The guy recommends NOT closing apps because it can cause heat. HUH? Never heard that before. And then he also recommends setting it up as new. No way will I, nor my wife, agree to that. I've been following that other thread about iPhones not waking up, and 9.1 supposedly fixes this problem. I hope so. So far, her iPhone is behaving.

Thanks for the update. So is this the same phone or a new/replaced one?

Physically break it then you can get a replacement via applecare
I would rather wait for the fix for what seems to be a software issue, and save my Apple Care replacement for a real hardware issue. But thanks for the suggestion.

Hopefully it's iOS related and a software update will fix this issue.

The suggestion to not close apps from the person who helped you seems ridiculous.

It took lot of effort for me not to laugh at him for that suggestion. I don't see how closing apps would cause so much heat. I do not close apps unless they are not responding. I believe iOS is smart enough to manage apps on its own.

I actually get quite angry when Apple geniuses trot out that suggestion, I'm used to hearing it from people who don't know better but when it's an apple guy they're just being lazy and i find it quite insulting to be honest. They're telling you that because they think you don't know any better, and because they know full well they can't fix it and just want you out of the shop. In other words, it's a bare faced lie to your face..

If I need to visit, I just hit them with a barrage of "I've already done this and this and this" and then they don't know what to say because they have nothing else to offer.

But, yeah, suggesting closing apps causing heat is ridiculous. There is probably some truth to closing apps and then reopening them all the time using slightly more battery life than just leaving them in the task switcher, but causing heat issues just makes no sense.
