Apple expects to sell +90 million iPhones...they can't achieve this with "Force Touch" as the only major feature.
But with OLED and 2 GB of Ram this will be easy ;)
They've done it before with something like Siri as the only major feature and then just some internal CPU/GPU bumps and the like (for the 4S), and the phones still sold extremely well.

I've heard this said before, and it may be a stupid question, but where is the source for the oft repeated "fact" that Force Touch necessitated an OLED panel? I may have overlooked something glaringly obvious, but I cannot find anything that says that.

I believe it was something Jony Ive said in one of the Apple Watch design videos. I'll try and find it because I've actually wondered the same thing. I do remember him saying something like that, though. Or maybe my memory is deceiving me.

Not oled display. Not A9x for 6s+. About 2gb ram...it's necessary for active Split view in iPads (iPad mini 4 is going to have 2gb ram). Maybe they could release new ways to work with 6s+ taking advantage of its larger screen. However, a lot of people have complained about safari page reloads, and other...it's time to add 2gb the ram to all of their new products!

It has to be a good OLED screen though, so far only Samsung have managed to do that.

Apple engineers are capable of such feats plus buying and leasing rights and reverse engineering (patents withstanding) isn't out of the question for Apple.

There has been a few times Apple has led the charge with certain technologies while having leading manufacturers produce the actual product. The 5k iMac with its proprietary TCON for example. They don't need someone that is capable of producing the best products in a certain area to design it for them too.
