So some super wierdness ... I've re-encoded the offending movie from the BD with a newer version of HB and it still doesn't play !!!

I run everything through MetaX on the PC so will now try that out, although it will be mighty strange if that's the issue as it doesn't seem to effect anything else I've done recently ...

does the file have chapter tracks? If it does not have any, MetaX on windows will create a hidden chapter track that seems to throw off the file on iOS7. Even if you delete the default chapter track on MetaX it will still embed a track, this seems to be a glitch in the last few releases of MetaX

Yes it does, but I also encoded another file yesterday and used MetaX and that's fine ...

How do I delete the chapter information easily from the file ?

Hmmm .... just took the original file and deleted all the chapters (albeit in MetaX) and it still fails. I get an Err -12842 when I try to play from PC to ATV ...

I'm now reecoding at 720 rather than 1080 to see if that makes a difference ...

File still plays just fine in iTunes on the PC ...

for some reason even deleting the chapters doesn't work, MetaX still creates a hidden chapter track. I only saw this when i opened the file in Subler. This has been an issue with around the last 4 or 5 versions of MetaX. Would you be able to download an older version of this and delete the chapter(s) again.

So I encoded it again from the mkv but to 720p rather than 1080p. Imported to iTunes without putting any metadata, it played fine. Then input the metadata using MetaX and it still plays fine ...

Not really sure why it continues to not play for the 1080p version but as I now have a version that works fine I'm (or at least my daughter) is happy ...

Will report back if I come across anything else but really not sure what to think as still the only change was the new version of iOS ...

I'm having a problem with one of my discs ripped in handbrake, it takes forever in a day to load. I'm thinking I'm going to need to rip it again.

The Meta X dude is a pretty accessible guy I believe. Would one of you that have a better handle on what the issue is be able to shoot him an email (in the about section of the program) to see if he can fix the issue?

Great detective work, everyone! I believe the issue comes about when we try to delete the chapter file and it's auto-added back in. I've confirmed that simply going in to the files through MetaX and either adding chapters via the ChapterDB or manually, it fixes the issue. Lots of files to go through to re-do and to put needless chapters in (who needs chapters on a 21 minute show?) but at least we found a couple solutions. Thanks for your help everyone, especially sodapop, since he tried to assist many times even when the issues didn't impact him.

Thanks!

Hey, glad you guys were able to figure out what was causing the problem and yes, I wasn't experiencing any problem but I do have a vested interest as someone who rips many movies in finding out whether or not I should rethink that approach. Ripping movies is very time consuming and no one wants to be in a position where a large percentage of their movie collection suddenly stops working when Apple releases a new software update.

Agreed. As avid movie fans, my wife and my's media collection is an important part of our lives, and we've long since eliminated the physical discs and have put our whole basket so-to-speak into our digital collection. Something suddenly compromising that is definitely not a good thing.

Dan (the MetaX creater) whipped up a quick fix for me after I emailed him. He's working on an update (as he always is), but is more than happy to create a personal quick fix for any MetaX users that email him--just shoot him an email (found in the About section of the program).

SUPER relieved that it wasn't an encoding issue, and that I can now update the rest of my ATV's to the new version--I do like the cleaner UI.
