I chose Médecins Sans Frontières, (a) because they are an amazing outfit, and (b) because all three of their hospitals in Port-au-Prince have been destroyed.

Pat Robertson needs to be gagged. He has said the Haitians brought all these natural disasters on themselves because they made a pact with the Devil 200 years ago to get rid of the French. Hasn't the Westboro Church got a vacancy? He'd feel right at home.

I'm surprised Rev. Phelps hasn't created GodHatesHaiti.com yet.
... perish the thought. (shudder)

That would explain it! Haiti was a disaster before this last disaster.

Everyone interested in assisting monetarily; be wary of where you cast your funds. Many fraudulent organizations are participating.

Have you guys seen pictures of the Haiti's "White House"

if you haven't "google it"

it looks like a pancake.:( so sad...... wish them all the best in the time of need:(

Really really really sad...wish they recover from it and build stronger buildings...
peace to all those dead and injured and their families...RIP:(

Terrible tragedy - I wonder what would happen if a massive quake struck Mumbai - where every sq. ft is inundated with buildings made of cement and bricks. During my last visit I saw 50 story towers that I felt, would not be able to withstand any earthquake.. they were advertised as 'earthquake resistant'. *shudder*

My mother is Haitian and has family in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel. Her brother survived but his neighbor died. At first she didn't believe me when I told her about the story. She said that there's never been a earthquake in Haiti before.

I'll add one other relief organization for your consideration:

Project Haiti
123 Minnesota Avenue South
Aitkin Minnesota 56431

Project Haiti is a 501(C)3 organization (donations are tax deductible) whose main function has been infrastructure improvement, education, and medical care for almost 20 years. Everyone associated with Project Haiti (myself included) does so without pay and even expenses come out-of-pocket. Every single dime contributed goes to Haiti.

Thanks. I'll donate after I get home.

I donated to Red Cross, if you live in the US, you can text HAITI to 90999 to donate 10 bucks to the Red Cross and have it added on to your cell phone bill. I've done that twice so far.

This topic should be moved to General Discussion. I know it's a "current event" but 37 replies? Despicable for such a huge event.

I think the next few weeks are going to be incredible difficult. I've been watching the news and they've been reporting there is a significant lack of government presence on the streets. So next month when the news coverage stops and the massive amounts of aid decrease, crime could be a huge concern.

Thanks, doesn't get any easier to donate!

Only just heard about this because I don't want TV or read need sites.

I'm shocked, I really am! Some of the images coming out of Haiti are just terrible :( My prayers go out to all the people affected by this.

Let's start with a full quote:
CNN.com said:
The Haitians "were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever," Robertson said on his broadcast Wednesday. "And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.' True story. And so, the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.' "

My cousin's theory is that Pat knows it's true because he's the other party in the deal. Seems plausible to me...

Obligatory Family Guy clip.

Canadian Government announced this morning that they are matching Canadians' donations to Haiti, up to $50million. The Montreal Haitian community has already raised $1million.

As note of interest to the non-Canadians (and probably a few Canadians too): The Canadian Governor-General is Haitian born, and still has family and friends there. (The G-G acts as Canada's ceremonial Head of State). It was difficult watching her making her TV address last night, as she is obviously just as worried and shocked as any one else with family and friends whose well-being is still unknown.

Sigh.

Its nice to see how fast the various governments can get mobilized when events like this happen. And how the partisan politics is put aside.

So next month when the news coverage stops and the massive amounts of aid decrease, crime could be a huge concern.

That is because prior to the earthquake there was no real functioning government, at the street level. No real fire-fighting capability. No building codes. Minimal police presence. Severely lacking hospital care (3 collapsed hospitals owned by Médecins Sans Frontières - Doctors without Borders.) Crime was already a huge problem.

What happens now? How does a failed state like Haiti ever become a functioning country?

For anyone looking to donate to relief efforts in Haiti, PSI is much more cost-effective than the Red Cross, CARE, Doctors without Borders, and any other organization I've found who is aiding Haiti.

PSI had 80 staff members in Haiti when the earthquake hit, some of whom are unaccounted for. They have mobilized to provide safe drinking water to Haitians, as well as other general aid.

If you'd like to know more as to why PSI is a more reliable charity to donate to, please this page at GiveWell.net. GiveWell rates charities based mainly on cost-effectiveness so that you know your donation is being used efficiently and effectively. As you can see, PSI received 2 out of 3 stars, ranking 5th overall and 1st in organizations in Haiti. CARE and Doctors Without Borders received 1 star, and the American Red Cross received ZERO stars.

I hope this helps!

My deepest regards go out to anyone in Haiti right now. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have your home ripped out from under you. I heard that the Canadian government will double any donation given to Haiti on behalf of you. icing that this is very commendable, I would like to see from other countries step up to something like that.

Again, my heart goes out to anyone in Haiti currently.

Regards,
Webers.

Sad but maybe god got sick of all that Vodoo Crap...
I have been there twice and it was in bad shape without the earthquake.

I never thought a earthquake would have taken been that strong there.
