I have the ipad (gen3) and really only use the darn thing for reading and internet surfing.
I would love a smaller form factor.
I tried the Nook Tablet- I love it in everyway, but it does not support a few reading apps (Comicbook lover, Kindle) and I just didn't want to lock in to such a closed system.

Any real work is done on the MacAir.

Bring on the ipad mini.

iPad nano with bluetooth and wifi for Pandora streaming, iTunes syncing, iCloud, etc. would be really cool.

This was interesting post speculating what the next iPod nano could be. I doubt they'll move away from the small box-like design.

The smarter iPod nano

With a rumor now suggesting iCloud support for the iPod nano, I'd argue that you'd have to move away from such a small for factor. I for one would quickly welcome a multitouch iPod nano as rendered below.

So, is it going to have dedicated space on Apple's website? There will be iPad and iPad Mini?

Just less and less space for the MacPro, I can see that

AH, that's kinda big imho. I hate the stick form. My favorite nanos were the 3rd gen and the current one... they both fit in a pocket a lot better (for my purposes, walking around and riding on my motorcycle, I need one that fits in small spaces and doesn't stick into my leg when I walk).

I really don't get why people are so in love with the stick format... it's obnoxious imho, at least for a nano that is supposed to be nice and small and out of the way.

iPad Mini? Or...

As a music performer and composer, what I'm hoping for is a larger iPad for reading sheet music. I know few people other than my peeps would want such a thing, but would worry me most is... the name. What: iPad Maxi? No, I've got it...

MaxiPad. :)

I'm pretty sure Apple can get more web space if needed.

Ipad mini to be called Ipad mini?

... I struggle to see who would want to buy the Ipad mini over a reduced in price Ipad 2.

I think it's safe to say the 9.7" Ipad will continue to lead flagship sales for years to come. Ipad mini will only be a fashion product people looking at price will go for a more advanced old generation Ipad.

Actually, I already own the iPad 3 and I still want the iPad Mini. I hardly ever see my iPad 3 as the kids and the wife hoard it all the time and the iPad Mini would actually fit nicely in a hospital white coat. Hopefully the iPad Mini will be stylus based to help target a slightly different market as well.

The smaller iPad better have the best display in its class otherwise I think it will be a major #fail.

Cool! I want a giant glass-front stereo cabinet, with nothing inside but empty air and an iPod nano under a little spotlight. Streaming to massive speakers via the headphone jack. Just because.

Im excited for the iPad Mini

Im excited for the iPad Mini. I just hope they dont use the God-Awful design in the picture on this post. That would be horrible.

I like the thought of a smaller, thinner, lighter iPad 3. If they sell it for $249, android tablets are done. I doubt they will sell it for that. $299 or $349 is more likely. The Apple tax is not cheap these days.

I hope you're right because anyone who owns a device with a retina display (a lot of people) would hate to look at a downgraded display. That's how I feel when I look at my 3rd gen iPod Touch right after I look at my 4S. I only use my Touch now to listen to music when I don't want to run down the battery on my 4S.

The iPod nano needs smart watch support to connect to the iPhone, sales would be crazy.

If there were an Apple branded smartwatch that paired with the iPhone I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Sadly I don't think they've invested any time in this area. I really hope I'm wrong.

When I saw they were pushing the nano as a watch I thought it had actual features but it was just an iPod on a wristband. If Apple made their version of the pebble just for use in sync with the iPhone it would be a dream come true for me.

Since when is this news? Might solve the confusion between big Ipod and Ipod mini but it's still the same thing.

Also I struggle to see who would want to buy the Ipad mini over a reduced in price Ipad 2.

You're making the assumption that Apple will keep the iPad 2 on sale once the iPad Mini comes out. I don't think they will. I think they will quietly drop the iPad 2 next March when the iPad 4 comes out, leaving the iPad Mini to address the sub $500 market with the iPad addressing the $500+ market.

In the end I think the iPad Mini will overtake sales of the iPad mainly due to the cheaper price in the same way the 13" MBP outsells the 15" MBP.

----------

It has to be iPad Air so that it fits with their MacBook branded names.

15 inch iPad Pro (to be released in 2015)
10 inch iPad
7 inch iPad Air

That get's my vote.

It would be a shame if this is to be the death of the iPod Touch. Not everyone needs or wants a cellphone plan. But the iPod Touch basically gives you iOS in what amounts to an iPhone without the phone. Great for kids. If the iPad Mini is to come in around $249-$199, than an iPod Touch for $129-$99 would be very attractive.

----------

why not iPad Large, iPad Medium, iPad Small, iPad XS? :D
Hmmm....

MacBook Pro 17" (now retired), MacBook Pro 15", MacBook Pro, 13" MacBook Air 13", Macbook Air 11"....

iPad 10", iPad 7", iPad 4" (rebranded iPod Touch)

"iPad Air" would have been a really dumb name. Apple wouldn't make that mistake.

Apple will eventually phase out the "Air" suffix. In two years or so, the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines will merge into one. Every MacBook notebook will be as thin and light as a MacBook Air, with the power of a MacBook Pro. Why introduce another "Air" product when it isn't going to be around in a couple of years.

I used to think that but now I'm not so sure. If you look at Apple's website they have very clearly defined the difference between the MBA and MBP. The MBA is the consumer laptop and the MBP is the pro/business laptop. It becomes a lot harder to make this distinction if you merge the 2 lines into one.

I remember Steve made a presentation once where he said that the optimum position was to have 2 laptop brands and 2 desktop brands - one each for consumers and pro users. I think that distinction still holds true today.

They could always bring out a new iPod Shuffle as a watch. I get the impression that the new smaller iPod Nano hasn't sold too well so I think they will go back to a larger device targeted primarily at school kids who can't afford the iPod Touch or simply want a more pocket friendly size/weight. So we get a 8/16/32GB iPod Nano and 32/64/128 iPod Touch.

I'd love an iWatch - pair it with your iPhone it would be great for reminders, alarms, twitter feeds, etc without having to take your iPhone out of your pocket. Great for travellers to if it had Siri. Get off the plane and talk to your iWatch: "Siri set my watch to local time".

I still think these iPad mini rumors are a complete crock.

:p

I think they are to a degree. An iPad mini would use iPad apps in defiance of Steve's comments about a smaller iPad being a horrid idea.

But iPhone/iPod apps are made for a smaller screen and could scale up way better than an iPad app can scale down

So I think we are going to get a 5-7 inch revamped iPod touch. And the regular smaller iPod Touch perhaps (although it might only be in say 8-16 gb and the two bigger will be th bigger size)

This will hold true for a few more years, but eventually contraction will take place kind of like how dumb phones were fine for consumers while business pros -- whatever this means -- gravitated more toward smartphones. Today both consumers and prosumers either use smartphones or want to. Eventually Apple will be able to pack enough power into a thin and light enclosure that will fulfill the needs of power users. My timeline is probably wrong though, I guess two years is not long enough for this to take place. Perhaps four is more accurate? Look back to the original MacBook Air -- it was released in 2008. In just four years it went from an early adopter fringe product to being the standard Apple notebook for most consumers. I think we'll see the Air eat away into the Pro as Apple contracts their PC line up, while expanding their iOS offerrings with the purported iPad mini, and possibly a larger iPad.

A...buy the Ipad mini over a reduced in price Ipad 2.

... the 9.7" Ipad will .... Ipad ......old generation Ipad.

Will you please make the 'i' small and the 'P' big.
Its been like this since 1997 can you please try a little harder.

Thank you

I feel much better
