If true..at that price the amount they would sell would be phenomenal.
I see people all over the world wanting them.

Although I do think 8GB is to small, should be 16GB minimum.

Having the choice would be nice. Some people just want something to browse the web on, and already have an iPhone full of music. If it makes it cheaper, I'd be okay with an 8 gig low end. Although with the size apps are becoming, who knows.

fantastic, They should sell it with a side order of fries.

Apple went from a Computer Company to an Electronics company to now a Toy company.

let the iOS dumbing down of Apple continue

Don't see it happening for $200-$250 with a Retina screen or same specs as the larger one but if they do have one at $200. I'm in for one at the price to give my son. One thing for sure it would put the fire out of the Kindle Fire.

I can see Apple making a smaller less expensive iPad with the push to get them in class rooms and using iBooks. A few private schools around here already require them but that's $400-500. At $200 public middle/high schools may start migrating to them at that price point.

The only thing about the price is does Apple get rid of their lower memory Touches

iTunes

I wonder if Apple is in fact making so much money from App and content sales on the iPad, that they are willing to lean forward with an aggressive price point

In other words, the Amazon Fire strategy but actually getting it to work in a high sales volume and higher margin way

I think anything below $299 risks de-valuing the category and brand. I'd start there and then decide later if I need to move the price point lower. So, the line-up would like like - $299 iPad Mini, $399 for iPad 2, and $499+ for the new IPad. That is a healthy, robust line-up

The retina vs. non-retina debate is fascinating. On one hand, Apple could be completely committed to moving forward with Retina. And, they want to drop the hammer on all they POS 7" tablets that have been out in the market the past couple of years. If they are considering it, they must be doing an incredibly amount of margin analysis and negotiations to get the component costs significantly down

I'd be concerned if I saw them come out at $199. But I will say it will cause ALL competitors in the industry to sh** their pants

I sure hope they don't do this. The iPad is selling so well now, coming out with a smaller lower priced one would sabotage their current higher profit iPad sales. Aren't sales of the Kindle Fire going down? This would be a bad move on Apple's part (imo).

I'd buy a 7-inch iPad, but I would want it to have 32 GB of storage. You can't do anything with 8, especially with retina graphics + textbooks.

Apple isn't going to release an iPad that costs less than an iPod touch. They never undersell themselves like that. So either they are going to drop the price on the touch and kill the nano and then offer a mini tablet for $250 or the mini iPad will be priced around $300-350, which seems much more likely. That would give them the iPod touch for the $200-300 range, iPad mini for $300-400 and the regular iPad for $4-600. Add in a $700 Macbook Air and you'd have a nice rounded out mobile strategy, while all but killing off the Kindle Fire and Ultrabooks.

On one hand.... I'm not considering an iPod purchase and not considering a 10" iPad purchase, but I'd jump all over a 7.85" iPad. That wouldn't cannibalize any sales.

On the other hand.... I'm probably in a very small minority.

Never gonna happen.

Never say never...

And I bet it does happen.

Many people, including myself would like to have a more smaller/portable iPad. I have the iPad. There is nothing wrong with the 10" but I feel it's more for around the home as the main machine for most or the business travel at work machine.

A 7" would be more idea for daily commuters, kids, on production shoots, etc. I do see more people walking with Kindles then I do with iPads. I never see iPads out in the open when people are moving/walking, etc. Barely see them on the METRO, etc. I do see Kindles everywhere..on the METRO, BUS, people walking, etc. I see iPads in coffee shops, restaurants, deli's, etc...so there is this metric where the iPad is just too bulky for on the move for most people.

The 7" size is great for portability.

In terms of the iPhone, the iPhone is too small to do most things on. It's great for on the go, but in terms of apps, and other things, most iPhone owners I know say they'd rather have something bigger for social networking, checking emails, etc...and they are more sales oriented people.

My friends kids have iPod Touches and they have an iPad for the family. Guess what device the kids want to use more. Now imagine if they had 7" iPads for kids.

And yes, clothing can adapt to have a pocket inside your coat, jacket to fit a 7" inch iPad.

Agreed. Even on an iPod, the 8GB is way too restrictive. On my first iPod touch I was constantly battling between apps and movies for space. 16GB is much more reasonable as a starting point and 32 GB is way better.

7.85 inch iPad? Maybe. 7.85 inch iPad with any resolution other than 1024x768? Not going to happen. Especially for 200-250 dollars. They'd really have to drop the price of the iPod Touch for anyone to keep buying it. I know its a different 'category', but who would pick up an iPod Touch for the same price as an iPad which is arguably more useful?

I agree with you about the resolution, but I don't understand why people insist on comparing the price to the iPod Touch. They serve completely different purposes.... Would you buy a school bus instead of a sports car for the same price because it is bigger? Anyone in the market for an iPod touch wouldn't be swayed by a 7.85" iPad... if they were, then they wouldn't know what the hell they wanted in the first place.

I can't imagine that Apple will introduce an iPad at half the price of the current iPad. Even if costs are somewhat less for the smaller components and less RAM it still doesn't make sense to cut margins that deeply. On the other hand, I can easily see them introducing a $250-299 iPad with a 1024x768 screen and 8 GB of RAM. Amazon gets the very low end of the market, and you can kiss all midrange android tablets goodbye.

MacRumors.... just go ahead and delete "Mac" from your name. You know you want to.

Were this info about the MBP's or any other OSX device I'd be skeptical. However, since we're talking iOS... I'd say it's just the tip of the iceberg as Apple has all but forgotten many of us who have no use for yet another limited and closed device.

Look for Siri equipped toasters in 2013. You heard it here first! :)

Yes. I would prefer the iPad to be non-retina with 16gb than retina but only 8gb.

Although I think it'll be hard for Apple to make an iDevice and market the screen as anything besides "retina" at this point...

It seems to me that if you are trying to save costs you go with a non-retina display and bump the 8GB to 16GB. I found 8GB to be unusable on an iPod Touch. I can't imagine an iPad with only 8GB of storage (6GB usable). This is why the Kindle Fire is so awful:

1) It is designed to "stream" everything
2) It has no 3G and therefore requires WiFi to stream (bad when traveling)
3) You cannot work around the network requirements by loading a bunch of stuff on the device because it has only 6GB of usable storage
4) With 6GB of storage you cannot fit the hefty electronic magazines and movies on the device and still have room for apps.

The bare minimum for a good tablet is 16GB of storage -- and I would wager in about two years the minimum is going to be 32GB. With the smaller screen you can go with less pixels, but you cannot skimp on the storage.

they can do what ever they want but if they dont make the iphone 5 with a bigger screen its all over

iPod Touch is DOA. This is going to replace it.

I think they'd kill the Shuffle, not the Nano. Something like this:

Nano, $79 /$99
iPod Touch, $149 / $199 / $249
iPad Mini, $299 /$399.

Apple doesn't have to worry about iPod cannibalization. For one thing, they don't care (you are still buying an Apple product) and second, they'd prefer it if you bought an iPad, because it would still cost more.

I think we're a few years away (at least) from something like this happening, though. Flash prices need to come down.

The iPod Touch is a completely different product. It's not going anywhere.

I agree...maybe Apple is going to try to (gasp!) make a lower margin on this new product by selling trillions of them and making the profits in sheer volume and also essentially owning the entire tablet space with 2 different size tablets. If I were Cook, I would seriously try to come up with some product/pricing FAST to keep out all the new tablets and position Apple as the world's dominant tablet vendor just like the mp3 vendor. We're still only 2+ years into the dawn of the tablet.

If this were released at this price, the iPod Touch would practically stop selling. I think $299 is a better sticker price if Apple wishes to keep the Touch alive. And yes, 16GB.
