It appears the rear cameras are comparable?

12 mp f/1.8 and f/2.8 on the telephoto.

Then apple says its lets in more light faster and bigger. but only with those words. Not sure what that means?

Then there is slow sync and portrait lighting. So is there a compelling reason for most people to upgrade for rear camera? from 7plus to 8plus?

Specifically talking about back camera and photos. I know video at 4k/60 is a good upgrade.

Both lenses are ois this year. As far as portrait lighting goes, there's tons of apps that'll do that. I'm on a payment plan and I'm not sure there's enough for me to upgrade this year. May just keep it and sell it next year to offset the price of next year's phone. Not sure yet.

The lighting is not important. I like the Samsung Note 8's ability to adjust the Bokeh effect during and after the shot more but I cannot walk around with Moses' tablet in my pocket. It should be minimally better for stills than the 7S Plus.

Both lenses are not OIS I think that is only on the X.

7+ and 8+ cameras are gonna be awfully close. Apple will cite some camera improvement or other every year no matter what, but OP laid out the specs pretty clearly: they're damn near the same camera.

Honestly (at least for daylight photos) everything from the 6 on up is about the same. Sure there are "improvements" every year but they are getting pretty small. The low light photos they show at each keynote are always better than the results you will most likely get.

6 to 7 in great lighting is massively different.

They're the same lenses, but different sensors, and the sensors can make a huge difference.

I'm really looking forward to the camera on the 8 Plus.

The iPhone 7+ camera was not impressive. I hope Apple improves the sensors in the 8+.

I thought the two lens system was very cool, but a lot of people I've talked to has said it feels like a gimmick. I'm hoping the improvements to the camera this year make it feel more like a serious camera and less like a gimmick.

I have an Galaxy S8+ and it just takes much better photos with a single lens. I want Apple to be competitive in this area.

don't forget the new hardware noise reduction.
but it's impossible to know how effective it is at this point.

This is what I am excited to try out. If this is implemented properly, the difference between the 7+ and 8+ could be fairly big. Assuming the sensor is also a sizeable increase coupled with hardware noise reduction could lead to a dramatic improvement in low light shot.

There's a different and larger sensor, which will bring in more light and less noise in low light situations. You also get portrait lighting, low speed sync, 4K 60fps, and slo-mo 240fps. I just wish iOS would support RAW natively.

Anyone have any idea on exactly how large the new sensors are? Also keep in mind the telephoto sensor on the 7+ was smaller than the normal one, not sure if that's consistent this year too.

It would make sense because the telephoto lens doesn't need as much surface area on the sensor like a wide angle lens does.

only the iphone X has both lens OIS, not the iphone 8.

different sensor model doesn't mean better, they can just make a "new sensor" without changing much. Does anyone know if the sensor size is bigger? That would be a real improvement.

They said in the Keynote it was bigger to help in low light situations.

They just said there is new sensor, they never said the sensor is bigger.
