I'm seriously considering upgrading from the 7+ to the XS Max, how much difference will I notice?

My 7+ is working perfectly and even still has 100% battery health, but my "new tech" itch is acting up. LOL

I've been very very good at holding out this long but I am starting to lose my resolve and would love to hear what I will like better in the XS Max.

I've had the 7+, also 8+ and now the Max and can easily say the Max is my favorite iPhone to date. One the biggest things I like over the 7+ is wireless charging, very convenient. FaceID is great too. At least for me anyway. Like Newtons Apple stated you would definitely love the Max.

I had the 7+ for 2 years and it was going strong until the last few months. Battery life and speed. I made the jump due to the promotions from att. It’s a significant difference. Less app and page reloading and operates quicker overall. FaceID works flawlessly. The screen size is awesome. I rarely use my iPad now. It’s a good upgrade and I’ve always wanted to get on the S cycle.

I just did this last Friday. At first I was let down as I wanted it to sing and dance and do the dishes, but it didn't. I've quickly grown to love it. FaceID is awesome and I didn't realize how much I would like it! I also picked up a few wireless charging stands (A yootech and Nanami stand and one flat yootech one). That way I can charge it and see it on my work desk.

I do feel it's smoother and more responsive (even tho the 7 plus was fine with that).

My opinion: Total waste of money. Get a new battery for the 7. $49. Done.

Honestly, I think anyone upgrading from a 7 or later phone is just throwing money out the window or a slave to the notion that purchasing something, anything, will somehow make life better. It won't. In fact, it will make it worse, once the thrill of having a new gadget wears off and you realize you're doing the same stupid stuff you did on your old phone but you're now $1,500 lighter.

Now to get it all setup. :)
Well since you made the leap you will now have to post your thoughts on the upgrade. As evidenced in this thread, people have differing viewpoints as to the worth of this upgrade. I went from a 6s to a max and wondered if I did the right thing initially. I decided I did the right thing.

I definitely get this logic. However, I had been dying for wireless charging as I can't stand plugging my iPhone in to be charged. I equally hated the home button, what with always having to tap it to do everything.

With that said, I'm growing more accustomed to the fact I may very well use my iPhone Xs Max until it breaks. I still feel bad for spending that kinda money on a phone and the only thing that is going to help is time... LOTS OF IT!!!

So yeah, I get where you're coming from.

So far I'm quite pleased with it. I'm old and my vision isn't that great and I find I can read everything much easier on it than the 7+. The upgraded display may not mean much to a young person with good vision but it really does to me.
For the first time when getting a new phone I actually used the iTunes backup that I keep on my iMac and restoring from that really simplified setup.

Now to find a case and look at the wireless charging.

Why not use iCloud for backups? I always thought iCloud reduced the chance of a corrupt backup?

For a thin case look no further than Pitaka.

Wireless charging - Mophie or Belkin only.

I don't want to pay for that much space on iCloud and I feel it is safe backed up via iTunes to my iMac which is backed up constantly. The restore worked perfectly. :) I'll look at the wireless charging tomorrow.

Huh? What will 11 Max offer with iOS 13 that others won't?

As per Ming, the new iPhones of 2019 will have significantly bigger batteries. The regular 11 especially is going to get the biggest boost. And the 11R the smallest boost. But all 2019 iPhones are supposedly going to have far better batteries than current iPhones.

I would trust Ming eyes closed.

When the next phone comes out in a few months you’ll want that. And then the one after that. This gadget addiction never ends, once you’re hooked. Might as well at least admit it.

As I said, the 7 is a fine phone. No reason to upgrade. You can increase the font size. Change the battery. Voila. New phone.

The reason to upgrade is that we can afford the price and the Xs Max is better than the 7 in our opinion. Some wants bigger screen, some wants the dual camera, some wants the battery, some wants the Face ID. We find what we need in the Xs Max that the 7 doesn't have. Then we go
"7 is a find phone" is not a reason to not upgrade

I use my 7 plus and it's a wonderful phone. It has an Apple silicone case on it and it's nearly as good as the day I bought it (bar a few usage marks etc). I don't care for many of the thrills in the new iPhones and I don't care for wireless charging. I don't mind having a home button, or a 'smaller screen' (5.5 inches is fine for me, I've watched videos on smaller screens too with no complaints). And I don't have to worry about cracking the glass on the back of the phone either. I understand upgrading from like a 6/6s (Plus) to an iPhone XS Max but the 7 is only two and a half years old (and the 8/X is one). They both have another year or two left in them. Those are the pros I see, but I know people will take those 'pros' as 'cons'.

And the upgrades after the XS Max will be better than the XS Max as (if you want to upgrade by then). I don't see the point in upgrading this late within the cycle either. In another few months, we'll have better phones. Soon enough, they'll be basically tablets ingrained inside your conscious mind :p

Nah, I would have held out on an upgrade if I was you, but enjoy your new phone. Hope it's great. Don't take this as me being negative please. I'm just voicing my opinion. I still think that the iPhone 7 Plus is a great phone with a few more years in it. I I want my iPhone 7 Plus to last a bit longer. I'm not anti-upgrade at all. I just don't like the current X/XS Model range. I think it's too impractical for my current needs, but I will be upgrading once it decides to crap out on me in the future. tI definitely do think that it's worth waiting for the better upgrades if your older device still has life in it.

My reasons for going ahead and getting it, I wanted it, my birthday is next week, upcoming tariffs are going to raise the price even higher, Verizon's trade in on the 7+ is pretty good right now. I am old and realize that if I want something I should get it now, the time for waiting for a better time has passed. Honestly 2.5 years with the same device is really pretty good for me, I'm usually chomping at the bit by the time there are only a few payments left and I was good for 6 months after that this time. :)

I admitted my gadget addiction in my OP, but I won't be buying the next release or probably the one after that, I had no trouble passing the 8 + by.

So far I really like the little bit of extra screen real estate and the new screen resolution, I haven't found anything I don't like about it yet, other than the fact that my case hasn't arrived and it's a bit slippery to hold on to. I'm getting used to the lack of a home button quickly and I like the facial recognition. Everything I loved about the 7+ is still here so I'm not giving anything up to get something new.

OP, no need to justify your new iPhone purchase to anyone. You like it, you went with it, end of discussion. I take no stock in the peanut gallery when they insert their opinions as a matter of fact, simply because they don't agree with something someone else does. I usually upgrade every year myself and don't need to justify my reasons to anyone, but as you stated with possible tariffs coming I'll wait and see what happens this year. Enjoy your new phone and best of luck with it, it really is a great upgrade over the 7+.
