So far I'm quite pleased with it. I'm old and my vision isn't that great and I find I can read everything much easier on it than the 7+. The upgraded display may not mean much to a young person with good vision but it really does to me.
For the first time when getting a new phone I actually used the iTunes backup that I keep on my iMac and restoring from that really simplified setup.

Now to find a case and look at the wireless charging.

No hyperbole... WIRELESS CHARGING HAS CHANGED MY LIFE, both physically and psychologically, no joke!!! It's that good; let that be one of the first things you procure.

My reasons for going ahead and getting it, I wanted it, my birthday is next week, upcoming tariffs are going to raise the price even higher, Verizon's trade in on the 7+ is pretty good right now. I am old and realize that if I want something I should get it now, the time for waiting for a better time has passed. Honestly 2.5 years with the same device is really pretty good for me, I'm usually chomping at the bit by the time there are only a few payments left and I was good for 6 months after that this time. :)

I admitted my gadget addiction in my OP, but I won't be buying the next release or probably the one after that, I had no trouble passing the 8 + by.

So far I really like the little bit of extra screen real estate and the new screen resolution, I haven't found anything I don't like about it yet, other than the fact that my case hasn't arrived and it's a bit slippery to hold on to. I'm getting used to the lack of a home button quickly and I like the facial recognition. Everything I loved about the 7+ is still here so I'm not giving anything up to get something new.

The screen quality alone is worth the jump from iPhone 7 to the Xs Max. I KNOW!!! This was the leap I made!!!

It's all good until you wake up and realise it hasn't been charging because it's 1/2mm out of range. But yes, I agree. It's a game changer.

Congratulations! Got my X S Max to today

I was also concerned about the tariffs rising and figured I can just get it now as the next one will probably not change that much (should still be 7nm SoC with 4GB RAM), I could be wrong but don’t really care, this thing is pretty good.

I am in the same predicament as you with the case, it only arrives tomorrow, so got a slippery phone for today, lol.

As far as the case, I bought the standard silicon case. I have applecare theft on the phone. The silicon case is nice and grippy and I haven't dropped the phone yet.

This is my second iPhone, the 7+ was my first. I was a late comer to iPhone and was worried about the switch from Android and realized pretty fast that I was worried about nothing. IOS just works so much better IMHO, it's been 3 years since I switched from PC to iMac and I feel the same about it.

Very nice, I will probably buy a few cases for this down the line, just want to see how I feel about this one, it should arrive today.

I put full comprehensive insurance on mine that activated the moment the delivery was confirmed, so I am covered for everything, lol. Never want to be caught with pants down when it comes to these devices, especially down here in South Africa, criminals target iPhones especially.

I definitely get this logic.

And in addition to being $1,500 lighter, you'll start to notice the downsides of the max:

  • "Hey, where am I supposed to grip this thing? That chin and forehead were actually useful."
  • "Damn, I have to admit that this max is big and heavy and thick. My 7 was an easier load."
  • "Hmm, not really that much faster at all."
  • "Eww, that notch. I see what people were complaining about. It's hard to unsee, and my YouTube videos--just weird. They seem smaller in landscape."
  • "Oh, gosh, I kinda miss the home button. Face ID is cool, but it doesn't always work."
  • "I'm spending hours trying to find backgrounds that make the notch disappear."
  • "Ah, this thing is actually narrower than the 7D. That extra bit of width makes more sense for reading text."
  • "Oh, man, this was expensive. Am I going to really, really want the next phone? What can I sell?"
Ah, well, live and learn.

Sounds like the fox and the grapes to me :)

Slight hyperbole in your post. The 512 GB Max is $1500, the base/entry level storage XS starts at $1000. Fairly significant difference in Price that you intentionally listed the highest specd’ iPhone.

And, of course, you're not actually $1500 lighter. You're actually $1100 - value of phone trade in lighter.

You really are down on the max... over and over and over again...

Those things you listed I have not thought AT ALL.

Me neither, and based on the fact that there's been millions of Maxs' sold, I'd say the opinions of one person (with a history of negativity) don't speak for the masses.

1. You got the wrong phone. The phones meant for you were XS or 8.

2. Get a 8.

3. Isn’t that a good thing? Just stay on your 8 and be happy you don’t need to upgrade.

4. Get an 8.

5. Get an 8. I prefer gestures. I prefer Face ID. I keep Touch ID disabled on my iPads. It’s annoying.

6. User error.

7. No clue what that is.

8. You’re not the target audience. You’re supposed to be buying an 8 or X. Not a XS Max.

There are upsides:
- a silicon case makes this super grippy and easy to handle
- even with the notch the screen is bigger and nicer
- face id works as well as Touch ID, which didn’t always work
- the notch is cool and in

The phone may not be faster opening apps, but the capability in total exceeds the iPhone 7. It’s up to the individual to decide if the phone is worth it.

Day 3 and I'm progressing from liking to loving it. I thought I loved the 7+ but as it sits on the desk waiting for the trade in kit to arrive I keep seeing that white frame around the actual screen area and thinking that I don't understand why it didn't bother me before, The screen on the Max really is so much better. I played with the camera a bit yesterday and it is also noticeably better and I was concerned because I loved the camera on the 7+.

I have 2 cases now am I no longer have that wet bar of soap feeling.

I'm getting used to not having the home button and starting to prefer it. Having to use the button on the iPad is becoming annoying. Facial recognition is so much better than touch ID, when you get old your fingerprints aren't as pronounced as they are when you are younger and I often had errors with touch.

It took me a while to find this "notch" that others seem so concerned about, had it not been mentioned so many times I would never have noticed it. lol

The battery doesn't last as long but I'm using it more instead of iPad.

Everything I loved about the 7+ works perfectly in the Max and many things work better. I'm a happy camper. :)

On the X series it’s tough.
I haven't even thought about it, I doubt I will look into it since I believe it requires using your thumb and I don't use my thumbs on the phone at all. I have arthritis in my hands that restricts the reach and motion of both thumbs and is very very painful.

OK I looked up reachablity and once I knew the name of it, realized it was on my 7+. I would accidentally activate it from time to time and just found it an annoyance. :)

Only because you didn't know what it was.
