Hi Yall, :D

I just got four 1.5TB HD154UI F2 EcoGreen Raid Class drives for $97 each and configured 3 of them into a RAID0 configuration. This is a step along the way of my project to fit 12 HDDs in a Mac Pro case - gracefully. ;)

Anyway, I thought it might be useful to share with the gang how they profile as setup in Apple's software RAID0 configuration. I selected 128K block sizes for the RAID because when I'm working it's usually with large data like video or large images. This will waste a little extra space and add to the margin of error when calculating folder and files sizes in some software but should be worth it for larger files.

So without more verbosity here are the benchmark results:

Hmm...12 drives huh.. You're as bad as I am. :D :p

Not bad at all for $97 each :), and even better that it's UBE = 1E15. :D

Let me know how they do, as I'm always interested in lower cost drives that won't drop out all the time. Though this is software RAID... much easier than a full RAID controller. ;)

Perhaps they'd be good in JBOD for backup. (Too nervous for a stripe set for backup use). :p Maybe I should pick up a pair. ;)

I wanna wait till the 2TB Green drives come down in price and get 4 of those. Then with the 4 I had before that'll make 12 and I'll be ready to start modding the case. :) Totally that'll make 18 TB - after formatting. I'll probably sell the system at that point - I dunno...

I wanna play with a 5.8GHz quad! w/ 8 virtual cores! :D

I'd rather have the WD 2TB drives as well, but I'm having a hard time parting with $200 each. For backup, I tend to be frugal, as I could care less about speed. Afterall, I have to save where I can to help boost the RAID budget. :D :p

Now that's more like it! :D Bring on the nitrogen! ;) Now how do I squeeze a cryrogenics system to the size of a shoe box so it fits inside the case? :p

Oh, nice, I didn't know that Samsung had finally released their high capacity new generation HDDs. How do you like them? I'd been eagerly awaiting the next tech bump from Samsung. Also, I didn't see on the website where drive speed was - are these guys 5400 rpm (like I presume the 'green' moniker refers to) or 7200 rpm?

Companies making green drives are a little tight about that in specific but I know they're variable speed. Probably around 3500 RPM ~ 5600 RPM but the density is now at 500 GB per platter so they achieve essentially the same data rates as a 7200 drive with 386 GB platters. A little faster in some areas, and a little slower in others.

Drive_Temperatures.jpg
So far I like them OK! They run 5c to 8c cooler, rated higher (60c instead of 50c), and they're between 100 MB/s to almost 200 MB/s faster than the drives I'm coming from (in a 3-drive RAID 0). They're a little slow to spin up to ready but I mostly leave my machine on 24/7 so I don't care so much about the difference. Samsung says they take 13 seconds to be ready but it's really more like 9. Some drives are like 5 and 6 I think tho. This might matter more to me when I have all 12 but there might be a sunny side to that too - the breaker at the mains won't pop when I turn on my machine. :p

I don't believe there is such a thing as man-made global-warming (it's all a scam to initiate a global tax structure in order that the money might be used for war and tyranny) but it's nice that my power bill will be 50¢ less a month I guess. :)

In all they're heads and shoulders above my 1TB WD Green drives and probably profile more like a 1TB black. So, yeah, I like'em prety good. :)

Spin up does seem a tad slow, but they aren't sold as the fastest RAID drives Samsung makes either. ;) Just think though; 12 of those attached to a hardware RAID controller with staggered spin up engaged (say 0.7s per). GRANNY Boot. :p

Ha ha! We'd need a "Feel the power" start-up sound. :D

These drives make a pretty funky start-up sound on their own already though so if staggered that might just do it. :D

When you get all 12, you can send them my way. ;) I'll record any startup noise for you. :D :p

Whoa... That would take a bite out of one's wallet. ;)
Right, but YOU can afford a couple of those saving the bugs by buying a Mac in the States or elsewhere instead of Germany :D
So everything is relative ;)

But on the other side one of the disks, that has the same price here.
And that´s just doubled price of the RE3 1TB (cheapest online price 173 USD ). So worth thinking about it.
More performance, less noise, less power consumption, less vibrations.

Maybe worth waiting for smaller RE4 disks for planned RAID0 instead of buying RE3 now?!

I've not looked at the price structure in Germany, so I don't know how much more it costs vs. the US on an identical machine.

Hmm... If you're planning on RAID, and the usage is write intensive, I'd rethink the use of SSD's. The reasoning, is the UBE of the flash isn't anywhere near what an enterprise disk is. 1E4/1E5 for SSD, vs. 1E15 for enterprise. Even with write leveling and TRIM, I can't see the SSD's UBE increasing that much. None of the articles I've seen gives any proof that it actually can. Given my experience with flash memory, I remain very skeptical. ;)

As it is off topic, just a short overview:
2.66 Quad standard configuration: € 2.299 = USD 3.250
2.93 Quad standard configuration: € 2.749 = USD 3.886
2.26 Octo standard configuration: € 2.999 = USD 4.239
2.66 Octo standard configuration: € 4.259 = USD 6.020
2.93 Octo standard configuration: € 5.339 = USD 7.547

OUCH! And I thought they were overpriced here in the US... That's just insane. :(

after some vague considerations:: id take it. all smart people are crazy in some way - i would fit the stereotype :)

2.66 Quad $4499AUS = £2207 (= $3599US) - normal US = $2499
2.93 Quad $5499Aus = £2697 (= $4399US) - normal US = $2999

something doesnt make sense here.. australias prices are cheaper then UK but more expensive then US - quite considerable too

I know they're nutz on the pricing in Australia, but is it getting worse over exchange rates?
Probably they are ;) But another 30% :)eek:) more overpized in Germany :D
Looking at it from what DoFoT9 has to pay, maybe we shouldn't complain so hard. ;)

Nah. Never. :D :p
