The (sad) fact, however, is that said college students will end up using Microsoft’s OS as soon as they start working after college. Colleges have, in my opinion, an obligation to educate the youth on the tools they’ll later actually need.

That said: working on Windows remains torture

A large number of those 71% will be greatly disappointed when they enter the real world.

Really? IBM offered employees the option to get a Mac, and now that’s the majority of their new machine purchases. They’re saving thousands of dollars per employee on tech support even despite the costlier hardware.

Most modern, nimble companies run Macs and larger companies are beginning to make the switch because their employees demand it.

Extra cred for rockin’ a Compaq (especially if pre-HP), but if she were truly hardcore she’d be running Linux... 2019 is the year of Linux on the desktop, after all

Tell her to get with the times! :D

Remember “Lindows”?

Omg, that was my favorite distro....

Sorry... just had a mental flash of Grandma using it without realizing, lol.

The Apple brand has become a fashionable luxury brand. Apple is really, really good with inspirational marketing to millennials. Last December I purchased a discounted $300.00 14" HP PC from CostCo. It came with a i3 8130U processor, 1080 screen, 4mb ram, 64Gb m2 ssd, and Windows S. I installed 8Mb ram, and a 512 m2 SSD for less than $125.00. Upgraded to Windows Home (free) and this inexpensive HP computer will do everything that 90% of millennials need. It'll run Apple's PC version of iCloud apps just fine.

Yes the HP case is plastic, but the screen resolution is great for watching movies, simple photo editing is fine, and using MS Office is okay too. It is not a gaming platform, however.

Well, at least college students are learning one piece of valuable information in exchange for the cost of their education.

Rightfully so.

MacOS is the superior OS. :)

However, it is as I suspected: Brand cachet is no. 1

I don’t see how MacOS is superior, maybe in usability but that’s about it.

I am in Engineering and in my field Windows and Linux distros are the best options. I don’t know what the people in this survey study but I can’t use MacOS for all my professional needs.

If gaming is within your likes, you also need Windows.

It is the same when I read that “iPad” replaced their computer... what the F?... I love my iPad but it is miles away from replacing a computer, not even for web browsing.

Why mac?

1. brand
2. design
....
7. Best with apps

Drinking soya-latte and using instagram?

I wonder did the pc users answer to the question ”why pc?” 1. Productivity... because they didnt tell anything else than that 51% chose pc because of the price.

Checking jamf sites it looks like that the report was actually made and written to promote their services they invest and sell for education.

I am sure 90% of those also have iPhones. There are so many useful tools that sync perfectly: Airdrop, clipboard, notes, reminders, messages, Applewatch unlock. This does not surprise me at all.

I hate all that. I use each device for different purpose. My phone is personal, my iPad is mostly for teaching and watching shows and my computer for working.

I disable all those syncing options as soon as I get a new device.

It has always marketed itself as such and with an annual advertising budget in the order of $2 billion, it ought to be really, really good.

I don’t know what kind of janky jobs you expect college grads are out there nabbing... but even all the way back in 2012, about 50% of workers were issued Macs (https://venturebeat.com/2012/01/26/50-percent-businesses-issue-macs-research/); fast forward 5 years to 2017 & it was announced that most Fortune 500 companies... from SAP to Walmart to IBM to Capital One are offering the choice of Macs. (https://www.jamf.com/blog/fortune-500-companies-follow-in-ibms-footsteps-with-mac-choice-programs/).

I don’t think things are NEARLY as dire as you assume! My guess is.... an extremely minute amount of those 71% will be disappointed in “the real world”.

Macs are also PCs. Can we stop treating Macs like a completely different type of device from PC, which wasn't true at least since the Intel transition in 2006?
While you are technically correct, using PC vs Mac makes for easier identification about which software/hardware platform is being discussed in any discussion. I'm going to stick with this convention.

Where's the "Use Mac but prefer PC" results?
