yea normally i always get the fastest processor but this time around i don't think its gonna be a huge difference and especially not for 250 more
especially when i will probably sell this machine for the next redesign next year

I'm the type that keeps computers for a long time. I could just wait until the redesign but then I could just wait until they update it again after that. So I may as well get it now.

Why not get an optibay? It replaces the superdrive, but then you will be able to have an extra hard drive. This means you can have the speed of an SSD for system files and programs, together with a hard drive to store all your music etc.

the reality is though, that the most time spent in a DAW is loading samples into plugins - spectrasonics for example having some patches at about 4 gb. what we really need is the money for SSD externals or large internals.

oh well ordered ..

15in
2.2
4gb
500gb 7200rpm
hires antiglare

I ordered the exact same machine, good choice.

I'm going to order a 120GB OCZ Vertex2 to put in the optibay. I'm still torn on if I'll leave the 500GB drive, or upgrade to a 750GB Western Digital Black. I would have gone with the stock 750GB, but 5400rpm seems too slow, especially if already putting in the money for a fast SSD.

I'm going 256 GB SSD for the OS and Applications. And I'm yanking out the useless optical drive and putting in a second hard drive, either a 750 GB or a 1 TB, to hold all my user data.

That sounds like a very cool thing to do. How easy is it? I'd really like to have a power house mobile rig for audio recording, and running applications and the OS on one drive and plugins/user data on the other sounds like a good option. And is that in a 15", or is the 17" the only one big enough for that?

@OP For the price on the apple store, just pick one of the standard 500 or 750gb drives. Just upgrade the drive when SSD's become cheaper imo.

@anyone else, um, $200 for a 0.1ghz faster processor, why would that be worth it?

I'm also struggling with the ssd/hd decision. Think I'll go with the ssd, because it simply doesn't cost that much more. I'm gonna get the 17" which isn't actually built to be superportable, so having an usb-powered external drive could solve the space-issue. Have the most important files (photos and documents) on the 17" which is time-machined. The expresscard-slot enables you to use esata with fast disks storing everything while at desk.

And ultimately - if I figure out it's not enough space, the 500GB doesn't cost much.

What do you think? :)

That's what I did. I got the $90 128GB SSD option, then I ordered the 750GB WD Black for $119 from Newegg to use in an enclosure I have. Best option really. You can't beat $90 for warrantied SSD through apple.

I went BTO SSD. Screw it, I want the fastest machine possible in portable form and I wanted Apple's 3 year warranty so it was a no brainer. Now, I did get the 256GB as the 512GB price was just way too high. I'm use to having no less than 3 drives connected to my current MBP due to having a gimpy 120GB HDD now so 256GB is going to be a boon!

I got the 500gb 7200, gonna wait for prices to drop on SSDs, already filled up a 256hdd so dont want to have to manage space, even though it would be faster.

Feeling a bit stupid for not getting the antiglare though, just got hi-res glossy.... :(

Call them and change it - I changed mine

Did you have to cancel the entire order and re-order? or did they let you just pay the extra £40 (or so)?

Since the computer was not built yet, they let me just change the specs over the phone, and will charge my card the updated amount when it ships.

Not very at all. You're better off buying from another brand name and installing it yourself.
You clearly don't know the market. Go check newegg. There is no 2.5" 512 GB SSD for sale under $1200. Apple's 512 GB SSD option is -very- competitively priced.

yea im moving the 750 into the optibay ... i dont need a super fast hdd for storage .. so slower hdd .. less power and heat i guess and this 750gb seems to be pretty fast

Ssd

I'm also having the same problem, I'm not sure which harddrive to get. I wil be getting the base 13in macbook pro, and I will only be using garage band mostly. Will 128gb be enough storage.

What the hell! I called Apple twice and both times they told me they'd have to cancel the order and place another. I opted to just cancel the order and decide what I really wanted over the weekend.

That's so weird. I had originally selected the 500GB, called a few hours later and said I wanted the 128GB SSD. She said "okay that will be an extra $90 and will be added to your total when your card is charged". I said great and that was that.

Well it's too late now. I canceled my order entirely, and must wait until the credit is back on my CC before I can reorder. Will give me time to possibly see some reviews first! Maybe someone will be able to tell me what kind of SSD Apple is using this time around.

Agreed, this seems to be the best option.
