User robAsanderson contacted AppleCare because of this problem (the lack of the new switch).

What it really comes down to is that there appears to be a problem with the update of iOS and that it is not related to specific providers or provider settings, as some users switch do prove to have.

I think they reached the conclusion that it was a problem with the update on devices with the A7 and above chipsets. Expect a patch shortly.

That's not entirely accurate as my wife's 4S doesn't have this menu/setting either.

4s doesn't do LTE,.

That said my 5s doesn't have the switch either and that does have LTE.

None of my pals (5s and 6 owners) including me have the switch networks type option. I've seen at least three iPhone 5 with the switching option though. I guess Apple limited it to the 5.

Not on my Verizon 5 -- just the LTE switch basically, as was always the case even back in iOS 7, if not even 6, from what I recall.

I guess you guys have seen this, right ?

http://softwarelint.com/ios/2g-data-on-ios-8-0-2

It disables 4G, and you can choose between 2g and 3g. I haven't tried it but everyone says it works.

Beware, if you want to remove this patch, and re-enable 4g, deleting the app is not enough. You have to restore the phone. So make a clean / good backup if/before you install the patch.

What's surprising is that people who are on the 5 have the ability to choose 2g/3g/lte on ios 8.1. Atleast half a dozen people having a 5 I know have this option. No luck with the 5s or 6. Just to be doubly sure, I checked and ensured out that all of them were on the same network. All were subscribed to 3g plans. I guess its the carrier's choice to decide which phones can have the option and which cant.

Surely something amiss. I'm having the same problem. Im gonna restore and report back. A friend of mine who is on the same network and same phone as mine got the option to switch between 2g,3g and lte. Heck even the carrier version was the same in settings >general>usage!

Sorry a little off topic but is that Bharati Airtel?

Apple says that if your carrier supports 4g, you don't need 2 g and will never see those settings. My carrier supports 4g, so there will never be magic "carrier update" to allow to select 2g.

I never believed this "it's carrier settings" crap, it's Apple who does this (or does not).

Hmm... Same carrier (MTS): iPhone 5 (which support LTE) has switch and iPhone 5s has no switch.

I think the option of being able to select 2G/3G/4G should be given to all users.

Battery drain and signal strength are the main reasons why I would want to be on 2G.

If I want to get good battery life and just make calls and send texts, then I don't need 3G or 4G. So I should be allowed to select only 2G, otherwise my iPhone is hunting round lots of 3G cells trying to keep a signal.

APPLE - PLEASE BRING BACK THIS OPTION TO ALL USERS - INDEPENDENT OF CARRIER SETTINGS

Carriers control their own networks, so Apple can't force them to offer something that they aren't offering.

Who knows who controls this particular setting.

Some posts say Apple controls it, others say the network controls it.

It seems a very grey area where Apple say "ask your carrier" and the carrier says "Ask Apple".

The only sure way is for Apple to enable it for all users like it was in the olden days of earlier iPhones before LTE/4G was invented.

They both do--Apple has to provide the different options and then carriers in turn enable whichever ones they support out of those that Apple offers.

Anyone else want the ability to switch 2G/3G/LTE ?
Sure a lot of people wouldn't mind having the extra options even if they don't end up using them. But what does wanting to have that have to do with it being a reality or anything about it changing?
