MKBHD has a good video on why Apple will never have USB C for the iPhone. They will focus on making MagSafe better, maybe including them in the iPhone box, then when EU law kicks in, in 2024, Apple will just remove the charging port completely(EU law states that only devices that charge via a cable needs to be USB C, wireless charging doesn't require USB C)
Could they mandate that the Magsafe chargers require USB C On the end?

Yeah, it’s quite possible that the EU requirements are just accelerating Apple’s original plans to go port-less and the rumor of the solid state buttons coming to the iPhone 15 is a big clue of this.
Which sucks because even today, very few vehicles (by comparison) offer WIRELESS CarPlay. MagSafe cannot transmit any data, right? It’s only charging?

I don't knpw why, but I've never found the iphone (any model) to be either peticulary heavy nor to thik. but then again I have big pockets and alwaus use rather thick wallet covers anyway
See? It's so thick and heavy you can't type correctly. ;)

Replaced my iPhone X for the 14 Pro Max. Mine did not work fine, even with a new battery. Not sure what kind of magic is going on here. The phone was unbearably slow and quick to heat up, not to mention the atrocious battery.
oh, well mine works pretty much ok, and i can go a full (no games or overusing) day with the battery..

Compact size. All these monster sized 6+ inch phones are ridiculous and make you look like an unfashionable goof in public with a huge bulge in your pants.

It's embarrassing how everyone thinks this is NORMAL.
#WeWantTheMiniBack

That's a very good point. Apple may just do that since sales for the regular iPhones have been low. Might discontinue the regular models as they did with the iPhone Mini this year. iPhone SE will stay for Apple's Spring event.

2023 iPhone Line up.

iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Pro Max
iPhone 15 Ultra
iPhone 15 Ultra Max?
Please don’t forget the
Mini … I have one + and ipad Mini they are the sexiest combination ever + a Mini Cooper 🤣🤣

The ECCS (European Commission of Common Sense) should mandate no solid state buttons from 2024 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Still a joke that they limit 120Hz to the pro models. Why not limit retina screens to the pro/ultimate models? 🤯
When retina screens came out in the iPhone 4, there were no ”pro” models. If that was brought out now, they probably would reserve it for the pro models.

Solid state buttons sound terrible. You can do some things by feel. How will clicking to take a picture work?

iPhone has usually had very nice clickable buttons. Losing that for something that seems less functional seems like a step down all the way around.
Did you have an iPhone when Apple replaced the mechanical Home button with a solid state button? It was a big success, you couldn’t really tell the difference and those mechanical buttons were prone to fail. Not sure there will be a big benefit if they do that for the other buttons but the experience of using the buttons should be just as good as with the mechanical ones.

Apple limiting certain features to the largest phone is just dumb. I'd happily pay the higher price, I just don't want a brick in my pocket. ugh, such an upsetting strategy.

There needs to be an iPhone 15 Mini Pro Lite.
Sounds a bit ridiculous I know, but having a mini phone with the pro cameras would a game changer. Non of the other pro stuff, just the better camera module.

The iPhone 15 Pro models could get 8GB RAM, up from 6GB, perhaps to support new capabilities like periscope lens technology.
Is there a reason why a periscope lens layout would require more ram? Isn't this just the physical optics? I'm open to being wrong, but this just feels like padding the article with baseless babble?

(Also more ram is useful in general - I just question the reasoning given here)

I’m keeping my 11 Pro Max for another year just because of the periscope lens… really hope not to get disappointed once the iPhone 15 Pro will be announced… I count on it, a lot!

I like using a phone case. I wonder how the SS buttons will be accessible? Might have to leave a larger opening so your finger can reach through to touch the phone buttons? Or maybe a touch sensitive area on the case? Hmm … will we see a whole new range of pocket dialing?

Just replaced a battery in an Xr and moved from a Note 9.

Don't see any really compelling reason other than more actual storage, but that even is taken care of with a Note 9 media player available, and both with 3.5mm jacks.

Hoping the existing USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapters will all be compatible going forward, though.

There's almost a year to go until we get new iPhone 15 models in September 2023, but we've been hearing rumors for months now. It's looking like the iPhone 15 models could get more notable updates than we saw for the iPhone 14, including features many iPhone users have wanted for years.

iPhone-15-to-Switch-From-Lightning-to-USB-C-in-2023-feature-sans-arrow.jpg

We've rounded up some of the best features coming to the iPhone 15 that we've heard so far so MacRumors readers know what to look forward to.

USB-C Port

2023 is expected to mark the end of the Lightning port for the iPhone, with Apple transitioning to USB-C. That means you'll be able to charge your modern Mac, iPad, and iPhone all with the same connector.

Apple isn't exactly swapping to USB-C in order to make your life more convenient, it's making the change because the European Union is demanding it. iPhones sold in Europe need to have USB-C ports by 2024, so Apple either needs to make a worldwide design change or create special iPhones for Europe.

Apple has confirmed it will comply with local regulations, and rumors indicate that Apple will make the change in 2023.

Solid State Volume and Power Buttons

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently said that Apple might add solid state volume and power buttons to the iPhone 15 rather than physical buttons, which would be similar to the trackpad on Macs and the iPhone 7's Home button. The haptic feedback would mimic the feel of a button press on the solid button, replacing the mechanical button press.

Using solid state buttons would likely protect against water ingress and could allow Apple to provide better water resistance. Using haptic feedback for buttons would require Apple to add new Taptic Engines.

Dynamic Island for All Models

Apple introduced the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the cheaper iPhone 14 models continue to use a notch. With the iPhone 15, the entire lineup is expected to get the Dynamic Island, so if you want access to the Dynamic Island but don't want to shell out for a Pro iPhone, wait for the iPhone 15.

Same Sizes

We haven't heard rumors about notable design changes for the iPhone 15 lineup as of yet, so it's looking like we're going to get the same sizes. The iPhone 15 and 15 Pro will measure in at 6.1 inches, and the iPhone 15 Plus and Pro Max will be 6.7 inches.

Periscope Lens Technology

We've been hearing about Apple's work on periscope lens technology for years now, and 2023 might be the year that it's introduced. Periscope lenses, which are already used by some Android smartphone manufacturers, have optical zoom capabilities that exceed the zoom range available with a standard telephoto lens.

With a periscope lens, Apple could offer 5x or even 10x optical zoom, up from 3x in the current iPhone 14 Pro models.

A Name Change?

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said that Apple might replace the "Pro Max" version of the iPhone 15 with a new high-end "Ultra" model. That would be in line with the Apple Watch Ultra, and it could give Apple an excuse to limit certain features to the highest-end iPhone, like periscope lens technology.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already said that the periscope lens could be limited to the largest iPhone.

3-Nanometer A17 Chip

The iPhone 15 Pro models might be the first to feature a 3-nanometer chip from Apple supplier TSMC. 3nm chip technology is expected to increase processing performance by 10 to 15 percent, while also reducing power consumption by up to 30 percent.

If Apple does use a 3nm A17 chip, it would be a notable improvement over the A16. Only the Pro models got the A16, which is built on a 4nm process, and the A17 is similarly expected to be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro. Standard iPhone 15 models may see an upgrade to the prior-generation A16.

More RAM

The iPhone 15 Pro models could get 8GB RAM, up from 6GB, perhaps to support new capabilities like periscope lens technology.

I will upgrade in an instant if it has USB-C , actually the only reason why I will upgrade. My current iPhone works very well, only it’s a mess with charging,
