Theres no way an 8gb iPad 2 is going to happen. That is WAY too low of storage for a tablet. To those who say its a possibility because of Apples push into education: most of those new fancy digital textbooks Apple is pushing with the textbook companies come in around 1.5-2gbs in size. Explain to me how a student will fit all their classes textbooks on an 8gb iPad. An 8gb iPhone is one thing; an 8gn iPad is another. It's pointless. My best guess is the 16 iPad 2 stays around for $399 and we have the iPad 3 taking the current price points and same storage. I don't think we will see 128gb this year.

Education markets?

Why even bother with an 8GB iPad ?
That's literally 6.5GB of usable space.
Even for education that is extremely thin. I'm not even talking user data here, just apps and the base install. I have 3GB of apps on my iPad and that is thin compared to some. As a competitor to Amazons machines we may have a different story.
I'm sure the cost differences for Apple to include 8GB of memory and 16GB of memory are negligible.
Probably less than $5.
Honestly they shouldn't even bother with an 8GB iPad IMO. The fact that the iPad 2 is already a year old will make people want to spring for the iPad 3, which is what Apple is trying to do.
The story sounds bogus to me.

Typical "it doesn't fit my needs, so it's stupid" mentality. There are tons of people out there that use it for internet browsing, netflix, and nothing else. I'm not one of those people, I need space, and lots of it, but I'm not going to bash a product because it's simply not what I need.

Sure, there are lots of people who don't need 64 GB's of space. But they always had the option to buy a 16 GB or 32 GB model. For those who really do need the space, they can pay the extra for the 64 GB model.

To take away the 64 GB option, as this rumour suggests, seems highly unusual. It's not like Apple needs to simplify the product line and therefore was forced to cut out the model that was the least popular.

I think Digitimes is just being full of it basically writing a novel because the claims make NO sense. Cutting out 64GB option to force people to use free 5GB iCloud storage has no sign of logic in it.

Frankly, 8GB iPod Touch is barely useful, let alone iPad with 8GB will have extremely limited use. How many iBook textbook will fit in 8GB? One after a few songs and other Apps? Only way out is to allow SD card slot, which is not happening.

8GB iPad makes a lot of sense for someone who lives EXCLUSIVELY in iCloud. But I travel a lot, and I can't access iCloud on a plane, especially over the Atlantic or the Pacific, so I love as much storage as I can when I have 6, 8, 12, and 14 hour flights. A 128GB iPad is what I'm after...

Now that I think about maybe that's why we saw a price increase rumor. Maybe the iPad 2 16gb sticks around for $399 and the iPad 3 starts its storage at 32gb and goes to 64gb and 128gb. So the entry model for the iPad 3 will be 32gb wifi only and that is why we as seeing an $80 price increase.

You're talking about college kids primarily for these textbooks. K-12 is as large and doesn't need huge text books.

How does the current iPad 2 get down to $100 cheaper with acceptable margins? Apple isn't going to give them away.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/9A405)

It's actually useless. It would fit about 3 iPad textbooks.

8 gig?

if its only 200 dollars that would be worth it. I would actually buy one for my studio as another controller surface with osc/touchable/lemur. I would prefer a now 64gig iPad 3 with a real fn camera in it though. i still can not believe the garbage camera in the iPad2.

16 GB of flash is very cheap and I can't imagine its enough for an iPad. So why would Apple move to an 8GB iPad when the 8GB iPhone isn't even enough? I wish Apple would move to 32, 64, 128 on both the iPhone and iPad.

Okay I call BS on this entire story. 8GB on an iPad does not make sense due to the operating system already taking almost two gigs. Lastly Apple makes the most margin on the iPads with the largest capacity so for there not to be a 64GB option is NOT an option.

I am going to venture to guess we will see a 32GB, 64GB and 128GB iPad 3 at $499, $599 and $699 respectively. No 16GB iPad 3.

I pad 2 will stay at 16 GB and 32 GB only and be priced at $379 and $459 respectively.

Just my two cents.

Only a $40.00 difference between a 32gb ipad 2 and a 32gb ipad 3? I highly doubt that.

You can get a 16gb iPad 2 on Apples refurbished site for $419. Retailers are offering the 16gb iPad 2 for $50 cheaper now. It's not hard for Apple to drop last years entry model to $399. They will still make some money off the unit and will really push those people who aren't willing to spend $500+ on a tablet towards buying one. Also, they will be making so much money off the new iPad 3 it's irrelevant. In usual Apple style they will outsell last years model by millions and in quicker time.

Fantasy. The iPad 2 doesn't have enough margin in it to absorb $100. Best Buy is clearing stock by offering a discount and Refurb units can't be sold as new so they are discounted so they move.

Apple cannot make acceptable margins by chopping off $100 on the current iPad. Other sacrifices must be made.

I've had both iPads with 64GB of storage. Even though I choose that option, I have found it to be excessive. I think 32GB is quite reasonable for most people. Though I have no doubt some will insist they cannot live with anything less than 128GB.

8GB probably costs Apple 3-5 bucks.

Isn't flash memory cheap enough now that there's really no reason to have an 8GB iPad? What's the difference between 8GB and 16GB in cost, under $50 bucks? Look how cheap 16GB USB flash drives are now!

Mind you those flash drives have a considerable mark up. Combine that with Apples buying power I don't see the difference between 8 & 16 GB to be all that significant. At best it is a $15 to $20 dollar difference by the time the device has its retail price set. People have to remember Apples volumes mean they get the best prices in the industry.

At best the device might exist simply to bring people into the shop to allow an up sell.

The options:
1. This is an education model intended for textbooks
2. This is to enter a new price point
3. Apple needs to use the high flash profits to offset the cost of the retina display
4. Digi Times is wrong

My money is on #4

Intended for textbooks??? Don't you know that textbooks sizes are around 2gb each?

iPad owners: what do you think is a good amount of memory for an iPad?

Depends on the person. Some people just want a tablet to read books, surf the internet and listen to a bit of music. They don't need gobs of local storage and even if they end up needing it there are options to add external storage or cloud storage.

The bellyaching here is funny.

Lol im all the way exited for the ipad3. But if there wont be a 64gb model im not going to get one. Because i will have to delete half my games.
This rumor is hopefully, and likely BS.

Way skeptical that Apple would do this, maybe on the phone but on the iPad for what, Apple is not dell, they don't want every dick and harry to own an iPad and they don't need to. Can't afford an iPad 3 or 2 there are plenty of alternative cheap bloatware for people to chose from.

So make sure lots of you go get your new fandroid bloatware and leave at least 2 iPad 3 white for me to enjoy. Can't buy one without getting one for the wife, muhahahaha.
