It may be crazy, or whatever, but I always hoped it would be more like this:

(accounting for price increases and 3G or LTE as well)

16GB iPad 2 @ ~$449
32GB iPad 3 @ $699
64GB iPad 3 @ $799
128GB iPad 3 @ $879

Wishful thinking, but dropping old Apple tech to a lower price point has been done before. ;)

This rumour actually seems credible.

But then it is:
Macrumors quoting a DigiTimes rumour. So a double whammy in the believability department. But I do think an 8GB iPad 2 at a cheaper price point would compete with the other tablets out there.

Nope. This rumor is about as believable as...um, I'm trying to think of something exceedingly unbelievable. Scientology?

8GB for an iPad is virtually useless.

Not really, if you stream your music through iCloud and movies through AirPlay, like me.

You're all missing the point. Sure, an 8GB iPad isn't useful for many of the things that makes an iPad useful, but it's brilliant as a low-end, low-cost entry device:

  • It'll put a huge dent in Amazon's Kindle tablets. Right now, Amazon is the biggest threat in the tablet market, as only Amazon currently has the infrastructure/ecosystem to really affect the iPad.
  • Like the Kindle touch, an 8GB iPad is great for people who do media consumption (web browsing, email, music, streaming videos, etc., etc.). There are lots of people who do mainly that (the people who buy kindles -- and love them -- prove that).
  • Sure, it may not be not good for some things, like e-textbooks, BUT THAT IS NOT THE PRIMARY GOAL, which is to stave off competition. The goal isn't to do everything that all iPads can do, although it would be great if that happens.
  • Unlike the Kindle touch, if people find that they want a tablet that does more (e.g., 8GB isn't enough), they can buy a higher-end model. Get people hooked with low-end models, and many will upgrade to higher-end ones.
  • There is precedence for this with the iPhone: as newer models are released, the older models at sold at lower price points, with lower storage capacities.
Personally, I've been expecting something like this. Apple sorely needs a low-end model. It's either this or a 7" wifi-only iPod touch (which is less likely, because the iPad2 manufacturing already exists and the production costs must have shrunk significantly by now). Having a low-end iPad2 makes a lot of sense, and I think it's pretty likely.

Edit: And, yes, an 8GB capacity makes the most sense. A 16GB model might eat into sales of higher-end iPads, and you also want the price to be as low as possible. I also think there's a good-chance it'll be wifi-only, too (lowers the cost, and further marks this as an "entry iPad").

Edit 2: Currently, iPad wifi models are the most popular, and 59% of iPad users supposedly use it mostly on the couch or in bed. Source: aytm: http://aytm.com/blog/research-junction/ipad-3-infographic/

I call BS....... storage always goes up, not down.

Cutting down to 8 GB makes no sense. I have a 64 GB model, and I'd love to have more space. iCloud is all well and good, but you easily can fill that space with Apps alone, forget about content.

If I could sell a peanut for $100 ...all I would have to find is a sucker willing to pay...

Hmmmmmm.......

Yeah ..........................

I guess what's most important is that Apple makes as much profit as possible. As a consumer I like to pay as much as possible. :D

No 64gb iPad? That SUX.

Apple wants everything in the cloud just like google?

I just sold my 64gb iPad 1 in anticipation for a new iPad 3 with even more memory..

My 64gb is nearly maxed out too.

What if you are editing lots of videos? Plus it looks like Apple is going to be charging more for less.

NOT HAPPY. NOT HAPPY. NOT HAPPY.

It seems like Digitimes is just throwing a bunch of crap at the wall and hoping that something sticks.

Same, if they keep a 16gb iPad 3 then I will just have to take the hit!
Still I'm stoked to see what's really in it!

8GB for an iPad is virtually useless.

No its not. It would do my parents fine. It would do my friend find who wanted to use one for data collection. There are many many use cases that people would use it for.
Just because it doesn't fit the load music/photos/videos model onto it means its far from useless.

iPad owners: what do you think is a good amount of memory for an iPad?

I got the 16gb iPad1 and 2, and with the amount (and size) of useful apps, some email, books, and mags, 16gb is now not really enough. Every time I see the app update notification light up I cringe cause I know I'm Gunna have to find ways to free up space in order to simply update what I've got.

...I'm going for 32gb next time.
Iamthinking

Personally I just want to see a low cost iPad. I'm only planning on using it for email and web browsing, so the capacity does not bother me all that much. Although I would like 16GB minimum, I think that 8GB is a little small even for my modest requirements. But hey, if it's cheap enough, then the capacity I can live with!

Personally I think Apple will be saving the storage bump until a not so major release(iPad 3S/4). But I can not in my wildest dream think that they will decrease storage. If the rumor about only 3 models is right I think:
iPad 2 16GB
iPad 3 32GB
iPad 3 64GB

The iPad can't DECREASE and become smaller(storage capacity) than my iPhone. That is ridiculous.

Of course it can. You're not the target audience. YOU are supposed to buy the retina display model, and not the cheap stuff. :D

Think of a low-end, low-cost, low-capacity iPad as Apple candy. The idea is to keep buyers away from the kindle kool-aid. Once people get hooked on the Apple candy, they'll upgrade to the more expensive stuff.

I wouldn't accept 8 gb on any of Apple's products!

Not really, if you stream your music through iCloud and movies through AirPlay, like me.

iOS doesn't stream music from iCloud (although iTunes from a PC/Mac does). AirPlay relies on you having the content locally (like, on that local flash storage).

I don't think a drop to 8GB is necessary; flash storage (especially at Apple's rates) won't be a significant cost. If they want to lower the sale price of the current 16GB iPad 2 by $100, they'll have a lower margin which will take about $40 from that 100, so they only need to find savings of about $60 on the device. R&D and development costs will have been depreciated over the life of the iPad 2, so that lowers the cost to Apple of continuing production of the device.

My guess is that probably leaves a $25 component saving required.

I don't think they'd take it from the flash (although it would probably add up). More likely is that recent advances in display technology (by the iPad 3's display) would lower the market value on the iPad 2 displays, allowing Apple to negotiate a lower-priced contract in return for additional panels to manufacture iPad 2s for another year.

A potentially better camera will take up more storage space. A doubly higher resolution screen won't help. Neither will the textbooks Apple is stoked about. iBooks and Newsstand content take up room too. So do multi-Gb games and regularly-sized apps. iMovie/Garageband? Content creation? Forget about it.

iCloud specializes in basic iOS backups/saves and document/photo/contact/reminder syncing. It doesn't do too much for your local storage. iTunes Match is a space saver, but isn't free. iCloud also doesn't deal with video (even if you made it on the device).

An 8 Gb iPad doesn't make much sense. But dropping the 64 Gb is a bag full of nuts.

I call shenanigans.

Really?

It's funny how people are saying they do not need all the space to just browse the internet and watch netflix. You REALLY purchased a $500+ product to just surf the internet and watch netflix? Have you seen the way these things are marketed? As means of editing short movies recorded on the device, as gaming consoles and mini media libraries. Excuse the consumer that has spent $500-$829 for wanting to get the most out of spending that crazy amount of money on a tablet.

32GB and 64GB for a price increased iPad 3 doesn't make any sense. Nor does an 8GB model iPad 2.

The Macbook Air is looking for and more tempting especially if it too goes Retina this year.

I bet Apple spread this rumor to lower expectations and to later have an even more positive feedback to the announcement of the 64GB and 128GB models. Why wouldn't they release such models in times of product diversification? Just to force some people to use iCloud, are you serious?
