Anyone else feel like Twitter and Facebook are going to be dead platforms in a couple of years?
I feel like they are going to end up like MySpace. People aren’t into it anymore like they used to be. Facebook is being used by folks that are in the older generation. Twitter is being used by bots. It is getting closer to its demise. Maybe AR/VR will take over (Only by Apple, not Meta).

The funniest part to me: keeping the description of the checkmark as "verified account".

>>>>> IT IS VERIFIED. <<<<<

Unless you paid with cash or bitcoin. You have a credit card associated with your paid account. They can find you via the information used to pay the $8 fee. (I don't think they accept cash.) They will bill that card every month and cancel your account if the billing fails.

The banks, all around the world, keep records of who you are, so they can get their money if you don't pay your CC bill. So what Musk has done is outsourced verification to the banks. Here in the US the Bank has to have your social security number on file. Musk now has your CC account number and hence your billing address, your bank's name and address and a TON more data. Saves him a lot of work.

When you go to make a fake account, you would need a second credit card that is not tied to you that bills to a different address and to a different person.

True except LOL @ Apple taking over with VR. I could be wrong but they just dont have the hardware or games for that.

If you do stick around with Twitter you might see something like this.

wish Musk had spent that $44B on getting matrix lights to work on our Teslas...

this purchase seems like an unnecessary diversion :(
Seems like he did not have a choice. He could have faced a major lawsuit or possible jail time. In my opinion, It's a total waste of money.

Introduced "at the insistence" of Musk?? Triggered much?
Was the iPhone 14 developed "at the insistence of" Cook?
As CEO, introducing an idea and directing subordinates to implement it isn't "insistence", it's just running a business.

Apparently if you signed up today, you're gonna have to wait lol. Guess I will spend 8 dollars on some music instead.

What an idiot. So now anyone can buy a blue tick? The whole point of it is lost now. Get ready for thousands of fake accounts with blue ticks. "The great leveller"?? The cesspit that is Twitter just got even more foul.

The original point of it was to make elitists feel more elite. That's gone now.

There's an old line about, "Don't let your mouth write no check that your tail can't cash", and that's precisely what he did. He wouldn't have been facing a lawsuit in the first place if he hadn't jumped headfirst and very publicly into the idea of buying Twitter. Now Elon's entering the second half of FAFO.

true but if you sign up for the new Twitter Blue the terms of service now say if you identify as another person / account and fail to mark yourself as parody and Twitter becomes aware of it you get permanently banned. So I take that if I pay $8 and mark my account as "Tim Cook" and put Tim's picture on my account and then post as if I am Tim with my blue checkmark, as soon as someone reports me I'll be banned. Not as good as working to identify accounts in the first place but a reasonable thing.
Correct. People are just hating on Musk for leveling the playing field for everyone. This will resolve itself quickly, and I see it as first step to combatting bots.

There is some merit to having paid accounts that get some sort of goodies¹, as the bot farms won't want to pay $8/mo for thousands of bot accounts (not to mention going through the process of having all those credit cards set up), but the fatal mistake was selling it to everyone as "now you'll get that cool blue checkmark that verified accounts have". It just devalues the blue checkmark for the purpose it used to have ("hey everyone, this is an actual official/verified account of some agency or company or prominent figure").

¹: (although letting your advertisers know that people with a propensity for paying for services have been partially extracted from the pool of people watching ads is not a way to make your ad space sell better, or for more money, to your potential advertisers - that also seems like a blunder)

Apologies if this has been shared - there's a lot of replies to go through on this thread, the "parody" accounts are already running amuck (and eventually being shut down, but not before the fake tweets went viral:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lebron-james-lakers-trade/ (account suspended after 30 min)

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/josh-mcdaniels-fired-raiders/ (account suspended after ~2 hours)

Fraudsters have no qualms about paying $8/mo to bilk money out of people who don't know better.
Those accounts didn’t last long at all so that’s an easy 8 bucks for each of them for Elon. If people want to donate money to him for 30 mins of “fake fame”, he won’t complain.

Already deleted Twitter and I have to say, it’s refreshing not to be bombarded with other peoples’ dumb simplistic 40-character “thoughts”.

I'm kind of ambivalent about Chief Twit. I am glad he kinda sorta invented Tesla and Space-X before he decided to re-invent Twitter.

50% fewer ads sounds good, but only if they don’t cut the ads that work — except nobody knows which ads work!
