I am also interested to know if Apple QC the hardwares before they ship. I am about to order a new MP, and it would seriously dampen my mood if scenario like the OP's happen to me. I'm also interested to know if Apple QC the ACD for dead/stuck pixels before they ship.

Does anyone know for sure the process involved/taken place before Apple hardwares are shipped off?

Still waiting on my new(er) MP. Apple reordered it once my first one was shipped to them. I now have a ship date of Feb 28 - March 4. A $275 discount was all they offered me for the troubles I've had. That is not even equivalent to a Developer or Apple employee discount. Oh well. I've been waiting since January 8th for this machine. This next one had better be flawless or I'll be looking for a total refund.

I don't know exactly what Apple does, but it would be impossible for any company to do a complete check of every system they ship. They probably test a sample of systems at random. There's no way that anyone checks every pixel of every display. The most any company can do is replace any defective products they might ship.

Ughh...My 3.2 arrived yesterday after being shipped on Valentines Day. I could actually feel the love. Set it up, went to start up the bad boy and bam, wouldn't boot up. Flashing Question Mark. It didn't see any drives at first. Unplugged the power and cables in order to reset SMC. Still wouldn't boot. Booted off system disc only to find it wasn't seeing Bay 1 at all. Swapped out drives in Bay 2 with Bay 1 and the OS started up. So, evidently there is a hardware issue. Could possibly be RAID I guess but everything points to a problem with the Bay itself. Apple is sending me FedEx labels. I get to send it back and wait some more for another shot at my dream machine. I'm exhausted from waiting only to be disappointed by a machine that was clearly faulty and could have been determined before it shipped. Oh yeah...the 8800 was covered in dust. As if it had been sitting in there for months. I am optimistic about my second one. I believe this one is being shipped to the Apple Engineers for dissection. Let's hope my donation to science helps better those of you who intend on purchasing future machines. Arghhhh....more watching mac forum threads for weeks on end. But I still love Apple and their products despite this experience. No, I'm not dumb.

3.2 8core, 8800 Dusty GT, WiFi, RAID card, 4 1-TB drives packed and ready to Fedex back to Apple.

I am so sorry to hear this. Must be VERY upsetting and disappointing. I'm glad you are not discouraged by the ordeal because once you get a working one, it'll be worth the wait. I've been lurking around this forum months and months waiting for the new 08 model to be released and nearly another month for it to ship and arrive. I had all my fingers crossed when I pressed that power on button hoping I wouldn't have any problems and again after taking out the original drive and putting in 4 1TB drives and 16GB ram. So far so good.....

I may be naive, but doesn't it seem odd that you'd have to do that for something Apple installed? I mean, I can see that if I'd installed the drives myself and all, but aren't they checking for things like this before they ship? Or is having to reset the SMC (systems management control, yes?) on a brand new computer not too unreasonable?

I totally agree with you. Why would you have to do that when apple installed the drives??? I bought my 4 x 1TB seagate ES2 and installed without having to do anything with the SMC (and yes, I also got the apple RAID card). Had to leave it over night to finish initializing (RAID 5)
