What would you guys recommend for something that can hold a Ti and can be used as a backpack?

I'd recommend anything by Brenthaven. The Apple Store has two there, the Titanium 2 Backpack and Mobility 2 both listed under 'Portable Gear'.

I got the Timbuk 2 laptop sleeve for my new TiBook 800. It's padded and will fit inside my messenger bag. Plus it has handles if you just want to carry it by itself. It doesn't have any extra pockets but that's what the messenger bag (or a backpack) is for.

i am a home mac user with an ibook

how strong is the titanium for carrying around?

titanium is efffectively as light as aluminum and nearly as strong as steel in everyday usage for most products

so how good does your laptop bag have to be?

my ibook is the original rev. a version and this thing is incredibly rugged for a laptop

my pc laptop has to be handled with kid gloves since parts pop off of it if slightly mishandled and i would like a metal briefcase for that machine

with my ibook, a minimally laptop designed bag or backpack is all that is needed

I was taking a look at the Timbuk2 sleeve too. How is it working out for you? Do you think it provides enough protection for your ti? Which material/color did you go with?

Anyone else have this or another laptop sleeve to recommend? I've already got a messanger bag that I'd like to use.

Thanks for the help.

Laptop Bag

Great timing for this thread. I've been spending alot of time looking at all the alternatives I can find for my new TiBook. I already have a fine leather briefcase that I would like to use for it. If I needed to start from scratch, I would lean towards the Brenhaven bag offered by Apple. I'ts sized especially for the TiBook.
To use with a bag already owned, it must fit inside. Those with padding and a sling system seem pretty neat, but I don't know how necessary the sling would be. www.swissarmy.com also makes an insert with a sling. Coach has one for it's leather bags, but it has no padding on the bottom. Go figure. www.Tumi.com makers of really good luggage, makes some fine computer bags that compete with brenhaven. They're really pricey, but their insert is comparitively priced to others, and is well padded. I've found some inserts have lids, or covers, for protection, while others have a strap that closes the opening and keeps the laptop inside. The theory is, I guess, if it's inside another bag, quick access is more important than another cover. Don't know if a cover would be desired. Currently I'm leaning towards Tumi's insert, or Brenhaven's bag. Still undecided.

www.sjdesign.com apparantly released a brand new sleave reviewed on powerpage.org. I have a lapdog from them, and also a leather case that is far thicker. I thought the leather case would be better, but because you have to always remove the computer to use it, it ends up being far more dangerous.

The lapdogs and sleaves that utilize sjdesigns laptop office concept are fantastic because you can use it on your lap without ever removing it from the sleeve, and, on top of that, the sleeve protects your lap from computer heat.

Take a look at their page, and if you get one, I promise you'll love it. I haven't used my leather bag (with all its extra space for stuff) since I got my lapdog.

Ti G4 800 Framerate for itunes

I have a Ti G4 800 and just did a framerate check running itunes visualizations in full screen (open itunes, check visualizations - full screen, hit the "F" key. I am only getting an average of 23 fps. Shouldn't it be more with the new 32MB card? Post your framerates for comparison.

22 fps on my G4 933 w/ GF4MX.

Oh wait, seti is running...

31 fps now. But I think it's capped at 31. I can't remember how to uncap it. Anyone?

To uncap your frame rate, run the visualization in windowed mode. In the top-right hand corner (next to search) you'll see the options button. In there, there's an option to cap the frame rate at 30fps, and a couple of other things.

Mine maxes out at 14fps, but then i do have a rev. a tibook :)

Under 800x600 resolution with iTunes 2.0.3
W/music: about 16
W/O: about 20

I am using the Cube, of course. Is it possible for iTunes to use the G4 processor to integrate visuals more, or is it all done by graphics and RAM?

I think it's limited to the gpu and graphics bus. iTunes sucks hard on my s900 even though I have a 32MB Radeon Mac Edition DDR, with a 510MHz G4. Visualizer=graphics=gpu

35 fps uncapped. That seems strange - it should easily do more than that (g4 933)

Based on what…I've not seen it much higher than that. Is there any frame skippage or is it smooth?

The sleeve fits well and is thickly padded. I don't worry about the computer getting banged up. I went with the grey waxed canvas instead of the Cordura. I thought the grey would go well with the Titanium. I will be travelling a bit in the next couple of months so the true road test will happen then.

Hey Bonehead!

On the Timbuk2 site the handles on the sleeve are a strange color, brownish?
What color are the handles really? can they be chosen?
Whats the interior, so if you choose grey whats the insode and handles colored?

Grokgod:

The handles and the interior are a black synthetic material, probably nylon. I'm not sure if you can select a different color. Timbuk2 has a flash site you can use to design your own bag. You can mock up variations and e-mail them to yourself for comparison. The color fidelity isn't one-hundred percent between the site and the actual bag. It could be my monitor though.

What did you decide about the 60GB hard drive in the TiBook? Mine's been pretty quiet except when reading/writing to it but that's probably normal.

Good to hear that other 60GB drives are silent. I guess the one I had was an anomaly, which is why it will be winging it's way back to IBM and getting replaced (the drive only). I will have to decide when the new one arrives if I want to make it internal, or external (firewire enclosure).

Do you get noise from the drive every moment or two, a short accessing sound??? That is what I was getting on mine. Called IBM and got an RMA for it. Nice people they have as tech's there. The last one I spoke with even wished that they made utilities to run on Mac's that are using their drives... which would make sense since Apple is using them in the TiBooks (all the drives).

Messenger bags

I really dig my Dana messenger Bag with laptop insert......sooooooooo comfortable.

I do get the noise sometimes but not all the time. I was just hearing it while reading your post. It is gone now though. Do you think an intermittent occurence warrants a replacement? I hear it when I'm on the internet and I figure it could be IE doing something in the background but that is pure conjecture on my part.
