8800 EFI32 Rom

the speed for the Apple one is 600mhz, like the regural, i think.

Is my understanding correct that in order to use an off-the-shelf 8800GT & flash it with altimeter's ROM, OS 10.5.2 is required?

My 2006 Mac Pro still runs 10.4, and I had no plans to upgrade any time soon.

The Sys Reqs on apple's page for the "official" 8800GT upgrade require 10.5.2. Am I forced to upgrade either way?

That is correct, 10.5.2 is a requirement for the 8800 to work in your Mac Pro under OS X. I know some people using hackintosh's were able to get 8800s to work in 10.4.x using NVInject, but I'm not sure if it will work with a real Mac Pro. I know I never had much success trying to get my 8800 to work in Leopard with NVInject when my 8800 was flashed with a normal VGA BIOS ROM. But it might something you want to look into.
 
I received my eVGA 8800GT last night.
I flashed the 8800 ROM from this forum(thank you!!) and it is working GREAT!

That's unfortunate. After all this time and frustration, they're requiring mac pro owners to throw more money apple's way in order to upgrade their GPUs?

Apple's new business practices as of late are troubling, and I think this shall be my last apple purchase until they decide to do right by their customers.

Another PNY Success

After not doing my research well enough, I ended up with a PNY VCG88512GXPB from my local Best Buy. ($179) It is a BLUE PCB, but NVFlash thankfully reported a 128k ROM, so I flashed. It's working beautifully as primary with my older 7300 as a secondary for the 3rd monitor.

I have the quad core 2.66 1st gen Mac Pro w/ 5GB RAM. Used the included power cable along with an extension to route power from the secondary optical bay. Will likely order the appropriate power cable so I can have my second burner back, though.

Thanks for all the pioneering work by folks here and elsewhere.
 
I totally agree with the rest of your points except Applecare. I mean... if you are willing to throw out that much cash for a Mac Pro (any sane person would prob go for 8 core and at least 8GB?), saving $150 on Applecare is insane. Do you know how much it cost Apple to replace your Mac Pro mobo? Do you know they WILL replace your mobo even just a single tiny pin is broke, and you will have to pay for it once your warranty is up?

Seriously a) it takes less then 5 minutes and a chimp to do it. (and really a chimp could) b) No problem barring the ethical issue here just go dump the card back to where you bought it and get a different one if the flash fails. c) Apple care is about as big of a waste of money as the rest of those so called "insurance" plans. Really if you're that worried about your computer breaking past a year then you probably shouldn't own a Mac and if you have extra $$$ burning your pocket send the amount you would of spent on Applecare + Mac 8800GT ($130 difference) and send it to me 😀

VCG88512GXPB from Fry's was 64k ROM !!

Was thrilled to get the PNY for $130 at Fry's today but to my dismay it has a 64k ROM and therefore has to go back. It has a green PCB. Wierd that the same model from BB had the 128kROM 🙁

Well you need to check if it is a normal pci-e 6 pin connector if not then you would need some kind of adapter or even a molex to normal pci-e if you have one of them available, most people should have one unless they have two optical drives in the machine.
 
Got it working! But no video on boot. Only after login.

After following the thread and applying the 8800 EFI32 ROM on my eVga Superclocked card I got it to work. I have a 1st Gen Mac Pro with the ATI 2600 video card. Here's what I had to do get the 8800GT to flash correctly:

Place the ATI 2600 card in slot 2.
Place the 8800GT PC card in slot 1.

Boot to the Freedos CD with my lcd monitor attached to the ATI card. Attaching it to the 8800GT before the flash would not show any video at all on both DVI connectors in FreeDos, OSX or BootCamp.

After flashing I removed the ATI card and connected the LCD to the 8800GT flashed. Works like a champ!

However, before, I was able to hold the (option) key at boot to select which OS I wanted. Now, when I first power up the Mac it has no video until it finally gets into the BootCamp or OSX login screen.

I can work through that by just selecting which OS I want once I am in the OS and rebooting, but the option to hold the key and selecting during the boot process yields no video signal at all. It's like it does not recognize the 8800 until after the OS has booted. Anyone else have this issue?

Any ideas!😱
