Not that the name matters but will there be an 8S?

Will it be a repeat(6S), repeat(7), repeat(8), repeat (8S).... or will they change the phone to a more modern LCD format , no bezel ...

And B4 you say it, I know its very early...

Apple already said it that the X will be the future of what they think of smartphones. There are already current rumors that 2018 lineup will be 3 models, all have the current X edge-to-edge screen style. The 8 is the last one of its kind.

The question is, how will Apple name the 2018 lineup? iPhone 11/11 Plus?

I think it will be X, 9, 10, 11. X denotes anniversary not necessarily 10 per se.

No it doesn’t. They literally said it’s iPhone 10.

We would’ve gotten the iPhone X regardless of if this was the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Ive even confirmed that.

You can support the claim that the iPhone X isn’t an anniversary phone either because they made NO discussion at all about it having to do anything with the 10th anniversary.

Apple explicitly wants everybody to pronounce the iPhone X as "iPhone Ten." There will be no iPhone 9 as a name as it will be a marketing disaster, releasing an "older" iPhone a year after the "iPhone Ten." There will be no iPhone 10 as there is already one, the iPhone X.
My guess is SE 2, 11, and 11 Plus. The X will be discontinued right away.

No 8s or 9, probably just 11 and 11 Plus next year with maybe just iPhone as the lower cost model, similar to the low cost iPad. They'll likely keep selling the 8 for one more year for the people who can't move past the home button yet.

Generally agree, but since the 6S is (surprisingly?) still for sale this year, the 8 could stay in the line for several more years, I think. But who really knows.

You could be right, but I'd imagine them wanting to move everyone away from the home button (besides the SE). We'll see though. The 6s is still surprisingly for sale, but I think that was because the X was perceived to be very high end and they wanted to give options. Maybe that's their idea moving forward though, hitting every price point.

Yes...I wonder if they really know what their strategy will be, going forward? Premium end only, with high price points and high margins, but lower market share? Or 'buy' market share with lower price points (and possibly lower margins, though I bet the margin on the 6S at this point is pretty good)?

From everything I've gathered, Apple is looking to cut into it's margins a bit and gain some market share at the lower end. Not to say their products will ever be cheap, but using older components at a low price point to bring people in. You can see it in some of their decisions in recent years. I think their long term goal is to straddle both and have price points for everyone.

iPhone 8 definitely will not have a direct successor. It is already the 3rd/4th iteration of the iPhone 6,6S, 7, etc.

Without rumor guidance, the outlook would be an iPhone X (gen 2) and iPhone X + for 2018.

With rumor guidance, they may replace the "middle market" iPhone with a largish 6.1" LCD model, which will be the replacement for the 8's price point ($650), and then have the X and X+ above that (more expensive). With the 2nd gen SE coming in below those 3 phones, at a lower price point ($400ish, etc).

Agreed. The iPhone SE is an example of this, they re-introduce a smaller form factor and a cheaper entry-level price point to diversify the iPhone lineup and for India's market as well. And then look at the 2017 9.7 iPad, which starts at $329, which also has an entry-level price point under the iPad Pro Models.

I think Apple has expanded their device lineup to offer the user a more affordable experience Versus the expensive devices that is not for everyone.

It's certainly smart. Once they get you, they get you.

Right, that jogs my memory. I wonder whether just swapping OLED for LCD is enough to bring the price point down?

Which is not a bad thing. I suffered with Android and Blackberry devices for years. I like the iPhone better as a phone/smartphone, and I like it even better as part of the ecosystem.

Agreed. I am very happy with my iPhone X and iPad Pro set up. I can see this working for me for years.

I'm concerned that they're all going to be taller than the 6/7/8. Those are already at my limit of pocket comfort.

iPhone X is extremely overpriced. My assumption is it will have an aluminum siding instead of steel, and also of course they will not have full OIS for the dual camera. Maybe slightly less ram, but I doubt that. All in all, it seems like it will basically be the same phone.

The X didn't really introduce any new hardware, aside from the steel sides, OLED, and Face ID, the last of which should be standard for all future iPhones.
[doublepost=1512669874][/doublepost]What I'm curious to see is what feature they add to the iPhone X+, because much like the original iPhone 6 and 6+, they will need some additional feature on the +, especially because they plan to sell it for some $1300 dollars, which is going to end up being $200-400 premium over the regular X.

Only thing I can think of them doing this time around would be Pro Motion display (120hz). However I would hope that is standard across both X and X+ next year.

Yea that’s why I returned the X and got an 8. The X is too tall for me for 1 handed use. The X isn’t comfortably pocketable with a medium protective case like the Otterbox Symmetry, feels like a brick.

I’m hoping that the SE might bring some features in like edge to edge screen. Price isn’t an issue for me and I would pay premium price to get an SE with a lot of the features of the X. Honestly I’m very happy with Apple’s LCD display technology not because it’s cheaper but because it’s easier on my eyes.

My prediction is no 8s.

The 6.1" could be called the 9.

The OLEDs for next year could be called the Xs/Xs Plus or XI/XI Plus (Eleven) or X2/X2 (Ex-Two) Plus if they want to brand an X-series. Even iPhone X1.

The 6.1" iPhone based on the X design and hopefully metal rear would be radically different enough to not be called an 8s. I suggest to call it 9 and be the final iPhone to use LCD. Or keep using LCD but brand the OLED as part of the X-series.

It's not too late yet for Apple to brand an X-series. Just pronounce it Ten this year for anniversary reasons.

I highly doubt it. Apple has been clear that the form factor of the X is indicative of their future smartphone design. I believe the 8/8 Plus will likely be sold for several years, however.

That's one reason I ultimately went with the 8 Plus over the X - I wanted to have the final, most polished version of Apple's "legacy" smartphone design.

Yep that’s why believe it or not I returned my X and got an 8 non Plus. I feel I have the culmination most polished version of the iPhone. Plus I prefer the form factor of the 8 and believe it or not don’t mind even a little bit the 4.7” screen on the 8 footprint. It’s the legacy footprint that’s easier to navigate 1 handed than the X from my experience.

Next year will be the ideal time to follow their iPad precedent and drop the model numbering entirely. They have to do that at some point (they don't want to be marketing the "xxxxx 17" for example). They can simply differentiate the iPhone models by size.

I am waiting for the XKE with the 12-core SoC and a fold-down display!

I don't think that's happening this following year due to yet another new/unique iPhone in the lineup (6.1" LCD model). Aside from that, I agree it's getting stupid.

Please please let there be an iPhone that’s the same size as the 6/7/8 chassis. Call it an X mini or something.
