330m Bootcamp Overclock

Hey guys,

I've searched all over for the answer to this and have come up empty.

I know a couple guys in the MBP refresh gaming thread were able to overclock using Nvidia Tools. I'm not having any luck; the sliders are grayed out and I can't make any changes with system tools 6.06. I've also gotten errors when trying to install Nvidia drivers other than the ones included with Bootcamp.

What driver/system tools version are you using to OC? And what settings have you tried?

(I'm on Windows 7 64bit)

I've exactly the same problem. I tried some laptopvideo2go drivers.

i'm running vista X32.

Maybe someone can explain how to do ?

Thanks but in fact no. 330m seems to be different.

When moving the sliders it's says that modifications cannot be applied ...

Driver Version

Which version of the nVidia drivers are you guys using? I've tried several from laptopvideo2go (with the modded inf) but keep getting an error that it can't find any compatible hardware. Also, what version of the tools are you using?

I had trouble overclocking my Dec '09 unibody with Windows 7 x64 in Bootcamp and had to install the latest Nvidia mobile driver (197.16_notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_international_whql) and Nvidia System Tools 6.06. Nothing else would work, tried Rivatuner etc. Might work for the newer models?

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com - download the 197.45 drivers and follow their instructions to install.

Then search for and download Nvidia tools 6.06 and install the Nvidia Performance applicaiton. This will allow you to overclock the GPU.

I'm new to overclocking so what is a safe speed most of you guys use and not let the gpu break? And will a tech from apple find out if it's ever been OC'd?

It seems apple may have closed the option to change clockspeeds on the 330m - just a theory at this point to be sure.

I have tried getting the stock boot camp 330m drivers, 197.16 and 197.68 to overclock by using nvidia system tools and evga precision.
For testing I have used 3dmar06 and furmark.

So far it seems that the clockspeed cannot be set with the stock boot camp drivers within nvidia system tools, but can be with evga precision. for 197.16+197.68 both are able to *appear* to change clockspeeds.

While it is possible to change the core/shader/mem speeds, it does not appear to have an effect under 3dmark06 or furmark. This may be caused by custom apple bios for the 330m, if it even uses "normal pc bios" and not some EFI supplied loading.

I hope that it is just me that is handling this wrongly, but I have had success with the earlier mbp's. See: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/718742/ . It is a bit disappointing that my new 2.53ghz i5 17" mbp only get about 6k in 3dmark06 at 1280x1024 :(

It's just you. Check the MBP gaming thread. I gained over 1.3k with my OC in 3dM06.

Anyways, I will try to make this as easy as possible since i keep getting comments for it:

1) DL any driver from Laptopvideo2go. I am currently using these:
197.16

2) DL the custom INF from that forum as well

3) PLEASE follow this GREAT guide Here on how to replace the INF and install the drivers.
NOTE: AFTER YOU REMOVE YOUR OLD NVIDIA DRIVERS, USE A PROGRAM LIKE DRIVER SWEEPER IN SAFEMODE TO CLEAN THE REMNANTS OF THE DRIVER

4) Next, install the latest Nvidia tools here

5.Now you should be good to go!

either something is not right or you got a bad overclocker. It happens.

Try another driver and the previous version of nvidia tools.

Hmm... finally figured out why my oc was not holding: if the driver fails and reloads due to overclocking - no more overclocking for that sessions holds -> reboot windows :)

Got to a stable OC of 650/1430/1100 core/shader/mem, leading to a 7700 score in 3dmark06 at 1280x1024, see: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=13793196 .

Bit on the low side compared to my higher OC of the 9600m gt though.

Have mine running now:
197.16 Nvidia Drivers (offical laptop release from Nvidia webiste, I slipped a modified .inf in it) with Nvidia system tools (EVGA Precision would NOT work).

625/1322/980 Current Clocks.

I truthfully dont want to push the core much higher because the laptop already gets HOT as it is. Like, burn yourself hot.

The memory im absolutely sure has more room and I wouldnt mind pushing it, but Nvidia System Tools seems to max it out at 980.

WarHammer 40000 Dawn of War 2:

Stock - 22.32 fps
Overclock - 27.18 fps

Not bad.

I would kill for a way to clock the part back up to its rated speed (575MHz, as opposed to the 500 Apple downclocked it to) under OS X.

I have zero interest in bootcamp. I just want the part to actually function according to its specs.
