Ok guys it's not on a 4g network so we can't call it 4g. it's misleading. The 3g iPhone runs on a 3g network so we call it iPhone 3g. So when we have an iPhone that finally runs on a 4g network what would we call it? You can bet Apple will market it as iPhone 4g.

I propose we use "iPhone 4" or "iPhone 4 gen" when talking about the next iPhone until we get an official name in a couple months.

Apple's nomenclature for their devices is entirely screwed up, the iPhone 2G could be considered the second-gen or the first-gen.

Seeing as people called it the iPhone 2G before it was named iPhone 3G, and the iPhone 3GS the iPhone 3G, I don't think it's going to happen.

You know what they're talking about anyway, why does it matter?

i would prefer people to spell it out correctly.. as in, iPhone and not Iphone or IPhone. if you're gonna put in the effort to capitalize a letter, do it properly

Well it was called the Iphone 2G by some because at the time it was released it suported EDGE data only and edge is a 2G (Second Generation) Wireless Technology.

IPhone 3G is named so because it uses 3G Umts/HSPA Technology

The 4G in iPhone 4G means the "4th generation iPhone", in these cases. I too doubt it will have a 4G radio in it. (that's for the 2011 iPhone) :)

Its like the iMacs...

we don't call them iMac g7 (err whatever gen they are on now...)

I think the next iPhone should be called "iPhone"

I personally think when we are on forums like this we should know it as the iPhone G4

I like this naming scheme:

so

if this was agreed upon, what would the penalty for breaking the rules? even if you got a 100 to agree you still have another 200 that don't know or won't agree. Hell we still have people asking about there Itouch.

Really?..........

And i agree....the same people who claim that 4G stands for "4th Generation" are the same ones who call the original iPhone "2G"........................pick one!

I call the new iPhone the iPhone 4g yet I don't call the original iPhone "2G" I just call it the original iPhone.

agreed, iPhone 4G is misleading
(and people were even calling the 3GS the 4G before they knew the name)

if we insist on including a four...you could call it the iPhone G4...? (iPhone Generation 4)
or the 2010 iPhone?

I call the new iPhone the iPhone 4g yet I don't call the original iPhone "2G" I just call it the original iPhone.

i call the original the iPhone OG (that's oh-gee)

Yes, it would be a little premature, but who is to say that Apple isint planning on adding a 4g radio to the iPhone 4G? Maybe that will be their selling point to keep adding subscribers?

WWDC Keynote:
"4G networks are coming, future proof yourself with the new iPhone 4G capable of taking advantage of both today's and tomorrow's technology in one device you come to know and love."
