..."future proof yourself with the new iPhone 4G ..."

Ah, that's cute!

One of the last things you can call an Apple product is future-proof.

Anyways, it's idiotic to call it the iPhone 4G. It sounds stupid, is misleading, and doesn't conform to the scheme established by the 3G (in reference to the generation of the network, not the device).

How is it not obvious to just call it the new iPhone?

Anyone can call it whatever they want, as long as they get the point across that theyre talking about the new iPhone coming out soon.

Tomato, tomahhto

Until a name is officially announced, 4G will do as well as any other. Yes, I understand that this might be confusing because of the phone's likely lack of 4G cellular network capability, but I honestly haven't seen many people confused about it. And, with so many people using the term, campaigning against it this late in the game seems a bit quixotic. It will have a real name soon enough.

As an aside: I am not sure what those who trumpet that the "G" in "4G" stands for "Generation" are hoping to prove; after all, that is what it means when referring to network technologies like LTE, too. And Apple clearly intended the "3G" moniker to refer to the network, not the hardware generation of the phone; otherwise the 3G would be called the 2G and the 3GS, the 3G. I don't think making "3G" stand for one thing and "4G" stand for another really lessens the confusion or solves the inconsistency.

By the way, I doubt Apple will even consider the "4G" the fourth generation of the iPhone: it has long been clear that internally the iPhone 3G is considered a relatively minor upgrade and not a completely new version of the phone. This is even reflected in their versioning: the original iPhone (iPhone 1,1) was followed by an incremental upgrade in the form of the 3G (iPhone 1,2). I'm pretty sure that Apple considers the 3GS (iPhone 2,1) the second generation iPhone.

can we please stop complaining about little things like this? until we know its actual name, people can call it whatever they want as long as others understand what they mean. call it the iPhone 4G, iPhone 4, iPhone HD, or, the new iPhone. it really doesn't matter

What is wrong with "the next iPhone"?, "the new iPhone", "the iPhone rumored to be released in June", etc.

It's not us, really, who have mis-named the next iPhone. It's the press. They've led the charge to call this thing "4G". And I think that it's because it gets attention. Consumers have heard the term "4G", know it means the "next generation" network with much faster data speeds, and read the article because they think the next iPhone is going to have it. Consumer is disappointed, gets bored and reads ads, publisher profit$.

You don't know how many people have either told me that the new iPhone will support 4G networks, or asked me to confirm the same. I have had to explain that nobody has a 4G network yet, that Sprint's "4G" in some current phones uses a standard (WiMax) that they DON'T intend to adopt as the core of their 4G strategy (they have announced their intention to transition to LTE, but are using WiMax to provide fast data service as an interim measure on a limited selection of phones), and that Apple is unlikely to release a phone with LTE support now to "support future networks".

Articles titles should read "New iPhone Model Rumored to Have Double-Resolution Screen", not "iPhone 4G Rumored..."

I heard from my own super secret source that the new iPhone is going to be called the iPhone 4G!!!!

It doesn't mean that, it is just the obnoxious people calling it that way.
so your saying majority of people on here calling it iPhone 4G are obnoxious? cause they referring to it as the 4th gen iPhone?

since it's the 4th gen iPhone and it has no official name how is it wrong and obnoxious to refer to it as iPhone 4G?....... is it cause we don't refer to it as iPhone HD?

personally I think calling it iPhone HD is stupid cause the display is not of HD resolution so why call it iPhone HD? the screen is no bigger than the current iPhone, and as far as there have been no reports of the next iPhone recording at HD res.

iPhone 4G FTW!!

Well it was called the Iphone 2G by some because at the time it was released it suported EDGE data only and edge is a 2G (Second Generation) Wireless Technology.

IPhone 3G is named so because it uses 3G Umts/HSPA Technology

I'm pretty sure 98% of us knew that, but thanks. Although, if you want to be correct, the iPhone 2G actually runs on the 2.5G EDGE network. Does the name matter if we know what the person is referring to? This reminds me of the whole "STOP CALLING IT ITOUCH!!1111" threads thing we experienced with the launch of the iPod Touch. Let us remember that all of you grammar police are incapable of executing your citizens' arrest from across the internet.

EDIT: I guess I contradicted myself by putting the 'i's in italics, however its been lowercase i followed by a capital consonant since 1999 with the release of the iMac. Imac/Ipod just looks terrible.

Yes, it would be a little premature, but who is to say that Apple isint planning on adding a 4g radio to the iPhone 4G? Maybe that will be their selling point to keep adding subscribers?

Because it's completely against what Apple have done before. The draw out features to keep you buying and only invest in technology if it's tried and tested.

iTouch is an abbreviation, iPhone 4G is a misnomer if it's not a 4G phone, that's much worse.

Apple does not call their products "<n>G" for generation, they they refer to them as "nth generation".

"3G" does refer to the network, which is the third generation of mobile internet tech...
which is exactly why the fourth iPhone shouldn't be called the 4G, as it doesn't have the fourth generation of mobile internet tech...

Again, no. It doesn't use a G4 processor.
nobody said it does...G4 Processors get their name from the fact that it's the fourth generation of that microprocessor
fourth generation iPhone = iPhone G4 (don't worry, i think it's a bad idea, too...but just an idea)

we shouldn't use a G at all, "fourth iPhone" or "new iPhone" or "2010 iPhone"...or let's just wait for Steve to tell us

Call it what you want.....

if it's good enough for Ives then it's good enough for me.

Jonathan Ives messages say "sent from my iPhone HD"
