Yeah, totally agree that it shouldn't be called the iPhone 4G. Yes, we ALL know people are referring to the 4th generation of the phone but that is still inconsistent with the way the phone has been named in the past.

Besides, technically, this is probably the 3rd generation, since the iPhone 3GS is just an iteration of the iPhone 3G with no real "generation leap". Both use almost the same hardware and software.

And for those people who want to call it the iPhone HD, they better call it the iPhone 3GHD. Personally, I prefer to call it the iPhone 3G_ or iPhone 3Gx.

Some idiot didn't think about the naming conventions and called it iPhone 4G and now the whole world has to follow this misnomer? And it boggles the mind that some Apple fans with actual brains think it's OK to carry on with this false moniker.

It's referring to the generation of model. There's also an iPod Touch 3G...

Good point, and shows that the names are completely screwed up. The iPhones are NOT following the ordinary naming convention of the iPod line. iPods are called by their model's generation, the iPhones are called by their wireless network's protocol.

I think the 3G name is done. It doesn't have to be iPhone 4G (i.e. 4G network). But calling it 3Gx doesn't seem very marketable. Everyone knows the iPhone is 3G capable and it'd get rather ridiculous calling it the iPhone 3GSHD.... What happens next year when AT&T still doesn't have LTE out? The iPhone 3GSHD2? The 3G fad is over and is no longer a selling point.

I think either the iPhone HD or some other simple name is best.

Consider this, when Apple named the 3GS the name suited the phone. It was a 3G phone that was a bit faster. A minor name change for a small yet respectable bump. This time around Apple will find a name suitable for the rather major upgrade. Which is another reason to drop the 3G name.

Also, how does it "boggle" you that people are calling it the 4G (standing for fourth generation)? Of course they're using a false moniker because no one knows the name of the new phone. Anything anyone calls it could be a false moniker. People are just calling it the 4G because its the 4th generation of the iPhone.

I honestly don't get the big deal with the calling it iPhone 4g when it just means 4th gen since the product doesn't have a name it seems the appropriate name, like I have said before I don't see the point in calling it HD as theres no solid proof yet that it would even record in HD

How do you know it's not on 4G network though, seeing as it's not out yet?
There's nothing wrong with calling it a 4g, just like the iPod touches get called 1g, 2g and 3g.

4G is not misleading enough for people to care

I think it should be called whatever people want to call it, call it Nigel for all I care.

Anybody that is worried about what it's called and gets annoyed when it's called 4G and has a little bit of red mist when someone claims it's in reference to 4th Generation and not the 4G network blah blah blah, should really have a think about their lives and work out why an internet forum poster is able to affect their mood so much.

Steve Jobs will call it iPhone Gizmodo edition. Since Gizmodo leaked the shiz out.

I don't think anyone is doing the new iPhone any favors by referring to it as 4G. I've already corrected a few people at work (on several separate occasions) who were excitedly talking about the new iPhone and how fast it will be on a 4G network. They were really disappointed when I told them that there is no indication that the phone would be. They were certain it would since they've seen it repeatedly called the 4G iPhone in the press, and 4G to the general public refers to the network, just like 3G on the iPhone 3G and 3GS did. In constantly referring to the phone as the 4G, the media, along with word-of-mouth is setting up an expectation for the new iPhone that it is not going to be able to live up to (as far as we know). That could lead to a bit of a PR problem.

Herman is hot.

Personally, I don't care what the eff its called. I think the majority of the people here who read forums of this nature on a regular basis know that it's not on the 4G network. They know that the 4G simply refers to the iteration of the device. It's not confusing in the slightest, at least not to me. :)

Just out of curiosity, do you sit on your own at lunchtime?

"Oh god there's that person that geeks us out with all of the iPhone facts, quick over here, the bloke with the B.O. problem has a spare seat at his table."

Let's get to the heart of the matter:

Please raise your hand if you saw 'iPhone 4G' somewhere on this site and you got confused and thought it ran on a 4G network.

Once we figure out who those 3 people are, we can write them a nice letter explaining it and then we can all go back to calling it the 4G and no one will be confused.

Deal?

The chances that the new iPhone will be called the iPhone 4G: 0%

The chances that the phrase "the new iPhone" accurately describes the new model: 100%

Now, which one makes more sense?

Apple's nomenclature for their devices is entirely screwed up, the iPhone 2G could be considered the second-gen or the first-gen.

I don't think it is Apple's nomenclature. The first iPhone was only ever called iPhone by Apple. Then they had the 3G, which used a 3G chip. Then they brought out the 3GS meaning 3G with speed improvements.

I thought 3GS was sort of corny but fail to see how it is screwed up in any logical way. It is the users that have all these idiosyncratic names for the phones. I guess if you really want to be anal retentive then iPhone Rev. 4 is what you could call it. At the end of the day was does this bother anybody?

When the new iPhone comes out most people will probably call it by whatever name Apple actually gives it. Most people will probably be as happy with it as they are with their 3G iTouch. :)

I completely agree this is a disgrace and a travesty for all mankind. I can't sleep at night because it bothers me so much

Really? This is what you're worried about? FFS get a life.... who cares what it's called. I call first gen just that, 3g that, 3gs that and I will call this one 4g as in 4th gen. If you or any one else doesn't understand that I really don't give a crap. Every one knows 4g means 4th gen.... only people that don't are those that don't care and those that are total morons, either way do you think it really matters what it's called for now?

Ummm...no? We all tend to eat together in a conference room and the only time I remember talking about phones with my co-workers was the few times when they brought them up. Was that cheap shot really necessary? I'm just telling you what I've heard people saying outside of Macrumorsland.

How do you know it's not on 4G network though, seeing as it's not out yet?

Because there's no 4G network for it to be on, once it IS released. AT&T isn't beginning their LTE rollout till next year. The phone can't magically attach to a network that hasn't been built yet.
