Hardmac reports that Intel has yet to begin shipping significant quantities of its six-core Xeon processors that many expect to appear in a refreshed Mac Pro. According to the report, distributors will have to wait until "the end of the second quarter" to receive mass quantities of the chips.
Intel informed its distribution networks that the 6 core Xeon will only be available in limited quantity until at the end of the second quarter.
A report from mid-March indicated that a Mac Pro refresh was due "by June", and it is unknown whether there has been any change to this timeline with Intel still not producing mass quantities of the necessary processors. Given the company's history of being first in line for chips used in its Mac Pro machines, it has been suggested that Apple could receive priority access to new processors.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) has been scheduled for early June, and while the conference seems to be carrying a heavy iPhone OS focus this year, it does represent a reasonable opportunity for Apple to introduce revised pro-level machines like the Mac Pro. An introduction would not, however, necessarily mean immediate availability, as chip supply constraints could cause Apple to delay shipments by several weeks as it gathers sufficient quantities of the Xeon processors.

A welcomed upgrade for the Mac Pro users! Now if we could have a few extra graphics card options...like from buying AMD (ATI)...

The Core i7 980X just crawled onto the retail shelves. I can imagine a delay for Xeon DP systems based on Gulftown.

I am aging myself. But I remember how it was once all about the MHz. Then came the G3 along with more education on what a CPU can do. And now many consumers are so educated that MHz numbers have take a back seat.

Imagine if in 1993 someone said that a 66 Mhz machine was faster than a 100MHz machine? Would have probably been a marketing failure to the masses.

Mac Pro Upgrades

My bank account should be ready by early summer. Just hope Intel can produce and Apple is ready and waiting for the new chips.
Looking forward to one of Steve's "One more thing" at the WWDC.

For the love of god hurry up!!!! I have been prolonging as long as possible and I was just about to drop in on a 2.26 this week. I NEED a new machine, like NOW, and I don't know if I can hold off much longer. I would hate to buy before the new procs make it into the machines. I have a series to edit soon and I can't make a machine upgrade in the middle of it.

Come on Apple... F the ipad customers and help out your roots customers, the pros. ****

That one more thing surely wouldn't be the Mac Pro. They wouldn't lose any keynote time to introduce new Mac Pro. It'd be a silent website update.

I always wondered why those on this site cried foul to Apple when the Mac Pros aren't updated when they expect them to.

This bit of news shows you that you can't judge a company without knowing the facts.

Besides only 1/3 of the Mac Users who crave a new Mac Pro, are the ones who can actually MAXIMIZE 6 or 12 cores, the rest just want the machine to brag about what they have.

I don't expect many single socket 3.2/3.33 GHz Bloomfield owners clamoring to to replace it with a Gulftown just yet.

True, but you have the other 32nm tech CPUs that are being clamored... like the i5-650, 660, 661, 670, & 680 the i3 variants and all the mobile variants.

Pretty much means that Intel's Fab 32 is being hammered.

Do you have a link? I would love to look at the figures!

Quite true though Clarkdale and Arrandale CPU cores are much more plentiful per wafer and can be binned out for their appropriate price and thermal brackets.

There is even harvesting going on with 4-core Gulftown based Xeons.

Introducing the new Mac Pro
Dual 6-core Xeons
ATI 5770 standard or 5870 BTO option
running iPhone OS4

Part of me is happier to see faster and better MacPros.

Part of me hates to see faster and better MacPros: I don't relish buying another one so soon. My 2007 is still completely great, but I'd hate to return to the days when you need to get a new floor model every 3 years to keep up with software and innovations. I want to keep this for another 4 years or more (yeah, I'm delusional) without Adobe and other software outstripping my system.

Unfortunately I don't.

Though if you browse the Mac Pro threads you'll notice the real users from the posers.

Also since the article is front page news look at comments thus far, only 13/14 comments, the majority of users on this site care about iPad/iPhone the iMac & Obviously the notebooks.

I think this is what a lot of people were expecting..sucks though that it is late June.

I really, *really* hope the base model Mac Pro can get under $2000.

Even $1999.99 would be nice to see. There is no reason they should *start* at $2499! They used to start much lower back when I bought mine (MacPro1,1, 2.66GHz).

Especially now that gaming is coming to Macs full force with Steam, there needs to be a Mac desktop for the high end gaming market. The only option right now is the Mac Pro, which costs way too much for what you get.

Here's hoping. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting long in the tooth, but I don't know if I'm willing to spend $2500 for a bottom end machine.
