I think it's a better idea to unveil the new Models when they have enough chip supply. Imagine if Apple updated the MBP's in January or February or early March. Then people would be delayed on shipping and would complain, and not many people would receive computers. Same here. Sure they could update them now, but would people actually receive any now? Probably not.

Mac Pros are low volume systems. I can't see there being supply problems unless they were unveiled at very low prices. This would be a *good* thing, and I'd be willing to wait longer for that, but I'm not holding my breath!

Apple is pissed, we can be sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple start offering AMD and intel chips just so they don't run into delays.

Then again, I'll be surprised if Apple treats the pro market right ever again.

I really, *really* hope the base model Mac Pro can get under $2000.

Even $1999.99 would be nice to see. There is no reason they should *start* at $2499! They used to start much lower back when I bought mine (MacPro1,1, 2.66GHz).

Especially now that gaming is coming to Macs full force with Steam, there needs to be a Mac desktop for the high end gaming market. The only option right now is the Mac Pro, which costs way too much for what you get.

Here's hoping. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting long in the tooth, but I don't know if I'm willing to spend $2500 for a bottom end machine.

There is no $2199 option anymore. The low end today costs the same as the mid-range did in 2006.

I don't remember paying $2499, but my memory could be spotty. Either way the Mac Pro was more affordable back then, and I think they should return it to that level of affordability.

Not for nothing, but this would be the second time Intel impeded on a major targeted refresh date because of supply problems. It doesn't bother me much since I'm not in the market for a new system but I can't help but wonder if there is head scratching going on in the halls in Cupertino. Was Intel the best choice after leaving IBM's G chips or simply that they were the only choice? The technology Intel is coming up with truly is amazing, but if no one, including Apple, can get a chip delivered on time then what's the point?

After returning 4 27" imac with various problems the release of the new towers can't come to soon!

If they haven't struck a deal with Intel to ship in May then realistically this means end of July before it arrives 'under your desk' as iPhone 4 release and shipping is going to consume June and early July.

They then have a one month window before new iMacs are due in September.

Is ANYONE shipping with these systems now?

For the love of god hurry up!!!! I have been prolonging as long as possible and I was just about to drop in on a 2.26 this week. I NEED a new machine, like NOW, and I don't know if I can hold off much longer. I would hate to buy before the new procs make it into the machines. I have a series to edit soon and I can't make a machine upgrade in the middle of it.

Come on Apple... F the ipad customers and help out your roots customers, the pros. ****

Did you not read INTEL is in short supply!!!!!!!!

I always wondered why those on this site cried foul to Apple when the Mac Pros aren't updated when they expect them to.

This bit of news shows you that you can't judge a company without knowing the facts.

Besides only 1/3 of the Mac Users who crave a new Mac Pro, are the ones who can actually MAXIMIZE 6 or 12 cores, the rest just want the machine to brag about what they have.

Wow, what an insightful and valuable contribution!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

The new Xeons are in short supply, but they are definitely out there. I bought a new server with a Xeon E5630 a month ago, and it came in with only about a week's delay. The 6 core X5600 chips were available at that time with about the same delivery time.

The 6 core processors start at $996 a piece in quantity (for the X5650 running at 2.66Ghz), so don't expect a Mac Pro with dual 6 core CPUs to be cheap.

Hi,

In 1999 the G4 PowerMac tower started at $1599.

Wouldn't that be nice?

Like many of the Mac Pro users on this forum, I make my living with my setup. Its how I pay a mortgage in Los Angeles and its how I put food on the table for my family. Its how I pay for medical bills, and its how I can afford to buy a car. No matter how fast your computer is, in broadcast animation, you need every bit of speed and power you can possibly get. So, i'm apparently part of that 1/3 of power users you seem to know so much about. I believe we have a right to complain- thats how companies know what customers think.

Anyway, this article goes a long way toward a possible explanation of what may be going on. Who knows- maybe a smart Apple or Intel employee leaked the initial story. Apple may have had a new Mac Pro waiting in the wings for a while and they just need the processors.

But Apple doesn't deserve to be let completely off the hook, here- why won't they up the specs on their current Mac Pros? Can't they offer better graphics cards, or more ram, or better hard drives, or, heaven forbid, drop the price a bit on a machine thats been available for over a year? If they would have done so, I would have already bought my new Mac Pro a few months ago. Like many of the professional artists on this site who are also waiting for new hardware, I just don't like getting ripped off.

If a nicely optioned Camaro were faster and better than the far more expensive Corvette, and GM was losing growing numbers of Vette customers to their own, lower priced products, or worse yet to Porsche, then I'd say that GM has a big problem.

Can we wait another couple months? Maybe, but right now that 27" i7 is looking pretty inviting........

Did you not read INTEL is in short supply!!!!!!!!

But they are out and Apple could announce the update with the caveat of shipping delays. What I was getting at was they should let people know WHEN they are going to be available. If it is early June, I can wait... if it is August I can't. They announced the stupid ipad months before it was shipping. They announced the iphone well before it was shipping. Why can't they help out the people who kept them in business long before they came out with all these iProducts? Get it? I don't think my request is too unreasonable.

I figured the lack of chip supply was the reason for the delay. Still, Apple could have sold more of the current Mac Pros had they lowered the price or upped the RAM or, well, did something.

My 2004 Dual Power-PC Mac Pro is hanging on with bandiads, gum, and velcro.

Why? I would've thought it'd be good as an option for those wanting to do numerical work via openCL.

Do I really need to go over why? In any case, nVidia made a card that gets hot enough to cook eggs and boil water by idling at 90*C, it consumes 300W of power and its MSRP is at $499, but in reality it sells for more. That's just 1 card.

All of that for a card that beats the ATI Radeon HD 5870 by 5-7%, card that consumes less than 190W, idles at half of the Fermi and costs $100 less. Also, ATI cards do OpenCL (version 1.0) but they do.

Now, who you going to choose?
