Oh wow, you bought it -- hook, line and sinker.

Of course it's built in!! You think they can just pony up ~$450 for EVERYONE who gets a new handset? No way! The reason your phone bill is so much is because they've built the subsidized cost into their pricing scheme.

That's why I always tell people like my parents: "Even if you're not going to use a new phone, you should go get one and re-sell it because ultimately, you're paying for the subsidy whether you get a new device or not."

Kinda, the plans were originally subsidized for dumb phone costs and they just changed the ETF for smartphones.

Not picking on you here, but is that estimate based on not having a smartphone at all (I am guessing yes), or is it based on not replacing whatever smartphone you have with a newer one (again, guessig the former)?

If you already have a smartphone, how does this calculation come into your decision making?

Truthfully, the former more than the latter. I guess I should have clarified this is how I make a decision for a NEW acquisition, not UPGRADING an existing one.

But to pick on you back....there's a fairly limited lifecycle for all portable tech like smartphones. While I could still talk/text on a device from 5 years ago, assuming hardware wasn't damaged, the usability of the solution with newer communications features (FaceTime/Skype Video, iMessage, etc) would be highly questionable so I think my example scenario remains valid unless you assume that tech lasts forever.

I live in Israel. the cost for iPhone 5S 16GB here is 992$ and the population's average salary is 2,342.99$.

Yes but its also customary for young professionals working for even small companies in Israel to receive a company-subsidized vehicle as part of their compensation (no car payment or insurance costs) as well as have their lunch meals compensated by employer via purchasing cards, among other perks.

Salary rates are seldom indicative of true cost of living comparisons internationally.

After a case and AC+ mine was just a hair under $1150, yeah it's a lot of cash no doubt. I use my phone ALL the time and this device is going to also replace my need for an iPad so when you think of it that way it makes the price a little less "scary".

The carriers also require you to add a $30/mo unlimited data plan, don't forget that. That's where they used to recover subsidy. Then people started actually using data, instead of the $30 being profit + subsidy, now they actually had to use the money to improve their networks ergo, now they're pushing everyone to tiered data plans.

I paid $950 after tax. It's a steal considering it will be with me almost 24/7 for at least two years. That's about $1.35 a day.

Well, I went with my gut and cancelled my order. One of you is going to get your 64 gb + space grey sooner now. Your welcome. :p Between loosing my tethering and the price I'm just not feeling it. The 6 +, for me personally, will not be any more helpful towards my business uses. I'm looking forward to the reviews when they start showing up. Wish you all the best of luck receiving your phones as quickly as possible.

I rationalized impromptu photo presentations of custom products I sell. Way easier to carry and hand over a large phone when networking or over the lunch table than, for instance, a tablet or MacBook Air.

I spent over 1k on mine and it did sting a little but i got over it. I mean i would have spent that money on booze or something stupid like that.
