Just got my iPhone 4, and it's great. Been trying lots of things out and came across an app that updated when shaking. When I shook the phone I could clearly hear something rattle inside. I kept shaking it to see if I could figure out what was loose checked all the buttons and didn't seem to be them. Then I noticed after a little shaking it said "NO SIM" so I thought this must be it. I took the sim card out and shook again and it still rattled so it doesn't seem to be the sim. Everything seems to be working fine. I set up a Genius appointment for Tuesday to see if they know what it is if it will be an issue. Anyone else seen this?

So Iv'e realized the only hardware I haven't tested is the gyro. Is there a way or an app (free) that I can use to determine if my gyro is working correctly? Maybe that is whats loose?

[MERGED] The 'rattling sound inside iP4' thread

So I've been loving my iPhone 4 haven't had any problems with it until just recently. I picked it up and noticed a rattling sound inside the phone as if a small part was loose. I looked the issue up but couldn't seem to find a solid answer, some people say it's normal some say to return the phone. All I know is it's annoying and ive never had a phone do that that before. So should I return it or is this just normal, or can it easily be fixed? Thanks in advance!

I just noticed the same little rattle... thanks!

Its sounds like a HDD needle rattling (are iphones are using SSD now)

Hewww thanks guys I was having a panic attack there for a sec, glad it's not just my iPhone! Still it's rather annoying...

Does your phone make a rattling sound? - Poll

If you own an iPhone 4 (and have not dropped it or opened or anything of the sort yet), can you please do me a favor and go somewhere quiet, put the top of the phone next to your ear....and shake it.

Tell me your results.

I hear a small rattling sound, not sure if its a loose part inside or if its part of some gyroscope. I discovered this last night when I simply shook my iPhone to shuffle a song. I have also read others on here who may have had this problem.

Thanks everyone !

It's the gyro or accelerometer

It is definitely not the button making the noise. My genius appointment is in a few hours. We'll see what they say.

Mine doesn't make noise when I shake it. I have noticed that when I place it on a table, I think the silent switch makes a small little noise but it's nothing I'd worry about.

It's the autofocus in the camera. It's designed that way. Same thread came up with the 3GS was released. Nothing to see here, move along.

Then why does it only do this with a few iPhones? I have tried with others and it doesn't do it.

Never owned a phone with camera before?

It's the autofocus that's making the rattling sound, same on all af cellphone cameras ;)

It's also why you experience the sound coming from the "standby button".

Ha, I would love to see how Jonny I've could fit a mechanical gyro in the iPhone 4!!

The gyro is a solid-state chip like those used in a Segway or any modern aircraft so there is no more chance of that being loose or rattling than any other piece of silicone in the iPhone.
